Canara Bank PO Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims, Mains and Interview
The Canara Bank PO exam pattern is the IBPS Probationary Officer pattern, because Canara Bank fills its PO posts through the IBPS Common Recruitment Process. The latest cycle, CRP PO/MT-XVI, has three stages: a qualifying Prelims, a Mains with an objective and a descriptive part, and a Personality Test with an Interview.
This page lays out marks, questions and timing for each stage, explains negative marking and final merit, and shows how to turn the numbers into a plan. The figures come from summaries of the CRP PO/MT-XVI notification, so confirm them in the official PDF.

Exam Pattern at a Glance
Stage | Format | Marks | Duration | Counted in final merit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Prelims | Online, objective | 100 | 60 minutes | No, qualifying only |
Mains objective | Online, objective | 200 | 160 minutes | Yes |
Mains descriptive | Online, typed | 25 | 30 minutes | Yes |
Interview | Face to face | 100 | Not fixed | Yes |
Prelims Pattern
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 30 | 20 minutes |
Reasoning Ability | 35 | 40 | 20 minutes |
Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
Each test is separately timed, so you cannot move unused minutes from one section to another. You must clear the sectional cut-offs and the overall cut-off to move to the Mains. Prelims marks are used only to shortlist candidates and are not added to the final merit.
Mains Pattern
Objective part
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | 40 | 60 | 45 minutes |
General, Economy, Banking, Digital and Financial Awareness | 50 | 60 | 35 minutes |
English Language | 40 | 20 | 35 minutes |
Data Analysis and Interpretation | 40 | 60 | 45 minutes |
Total | 170 | 200 | 160 minutes |
The order of sections on screen may vary. Check the notification for the language rules of each paper.
Descriptive part
Test | Tasks | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
Descriptive English | Essay and comprehension | 25 | 30 minutes |
The descriptive paper is typed on the computer. It is reported to be evaluated only if you meet the minimum marks in the objective part. The Mains total is 225 marks.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Every wrong answer in the objective tests attracts negative marking equal to one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question. Unattempted questions carry no penalty. Because marks per question differ by section, the cost of a wrong guess is not the same everywhere. The descriptive paper has no negative marking.
Where the same exam is held in more than one shift, scores may be normalised. Confirm the rule in the notification.
What the Pattern Means for You
Reasoning is the heaviest Prelims section: It has 40 of the 100 marks, so a weak reasoning score is hard to make up elsewhere.
Sectional cut-offs can stop a high total: A strong overall score will not help if you miss the minimum in one section.
Reasoning and Data Analysis decide the Mains: They carry 120 of the 200 objective marks.
English is light in the Mains: It has 40 questions for 20 marks, so keep your time there tight.
Awareness is a 60-mark section with 50 questions: Steady reading across months gives better returns than last-minute revision.
Older pages may still show an equal-marks Prelims or a smaller Mains with a letter-writing descriptive paper, so follow the official notification.
Personality Test and Interview
The interview carries 100 marks. The minimum qualifying marks are reported as 40 percent for General and EWS candidates and 35 percent for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates. A Personality Test has also been reported as part of this cycle. It is described as mandatory but non-qualifying, and you would need to appear for it to be eligible for the interview. Read the notification for the dates and the process.
Final Merit Calculation
Final merit is reported as the Mains and the Interview in an 80 to 20 ratio. Prelims marks do not count. The allotment to a bank follows your merit rank, your category and the bank preferences you have filled in.
As an illustration only, assume simple proportional scaling. A candidate with 120 marks out of 225 in the Mains and 60 marks out of 100 in the interview would get about 42.7 from the Mains (120 divided by 225, multiplied by 80) and 12 from the interview (60 multiplied by 0.2), for a final score of about 54.7 out of 100. The actual scaling method is set by IBPS, so do not treat this as an official formula.
Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy
Start with your strongest section when the order allows: A good start builds speed and confidence.
Skip long puzzles on the first pass: Return to them if time remains in the same section.
Guess only when you can remove options: Random guessing costs marks over many attempts because of negative marking.
Plan the descriptive paper: Spend about 3 minutes on points, then write and re-read the essay.
