Council of Scientific & Industrial Research SO
CSIR SO is a recruitment exam conducted by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research for the recruitment of Specialist Officers, relevant to candidates preparing for recruitment at public sector undertakings and central institutions.
This CSIR SO guide explains how the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research recruits Section Officers as of October 2026. It covers the last full CASE cycle (CASE-2023), the separate 2026 drive that recruited Section Officers from UPSC Civil Services candidates, eligibility, the exam pattern, syllabus, salary, previous cut-offs and a practical preparation plan.
It also explains how the SO post differs from the Assistant Section Officer (ASO) post, because many pages mix the two.

What is CSIR SO?
CSIR SO refers to the Section Officer post in the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the government body that runs a network of national laboratories across India. It is a Group B Gazetted administrative post at Pay Level 8. Section Officers supervise general administration, finance and accounts, or stores and purchase work at CSIR headquarters in New Delhi and in its laboratories, so the post is filled in three cadres: General, Finance and Accounts, and Stores and Purchase.
CSIR recruits Section Officers mainly through the Combined Administrative Services Examination (CASE), a national-level exam it conducts for both SO and ASO posts. CASE does not follow a fixed yearly calendar: the last full cycle was CASE-2023, and in 2026 CSIR also filled 8 SO posts from non-recommended UPSC CSE-2024 candidates. The exam is open to Indian graduates up to 33 years of age, with relaxation for reserved categories, and it attracts a large field: CASE-2023 received 4,75,688 applications for 444 SO and ASO posts. For SO, selection runs through Paper I and Paper II (CBT), Paper III (descriptive) and an interview.

Latest Update: Where CSIR SO Recruitment Stands
CSIR has used two routes to fill Section Officer posts in recent years. Knowing which route a notice belongs to matters, because the eligibility and stages are completely different.
Route 1: CASE (open competitive exam)
The last full CASE cycle was CASE-2023, advertised for 444 posts (76 SO and 368 ASO). Its key dates were:
Event (CASE-2023, Advt. No. E-I/RC/2023/1) | Date |
|---|---|
Advertisement released | 8 December 2023 |
Last date to apply | 12 January 2024 |
Stage I: Paper I and Paper II (CBT) | 5 to 20 February 2024 |
Stage I result | June 2024 |
Stage II: Paper III (plus CPT for ASO) | 7 July 2024 |
Final result (SO and ASO) | 2 January 2025 |
As of 28 October 2026, CSIR has not announced CASE-2025 or CASE-2026. Any page quoting fresh CASE dates or vacancies without an official CSIR notice is guessing. The pattern and syllabus on this page follow the CASE-2023 advertisement, which is the latest official reference.
Recruitment from UPSC Civil Services non-recommended candidates (2026)
In January 2026, CSIR advertised 8 Section Officer posts (Advt. No. E-I/RC/2026/1) only for candidates who appeared in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024 and were listed as non-recommended on the UPSC Pratibha Setu portal. There was no written test by CSIR. Candidates were shortlisted on their CSE-2024 marks and then interviewed.
Event (Advt. E-I/RC/2026/1) | Date |
|---|---|
Online registration opened | 15 January 2026 |
Last date to apply and pay fee | 4 February 2026 (5:00 PM) |
Screening result | 19 February 2026 (22 candidates shortlisted) |
Interview and document verification (Delhi) | 14 March 2026 |
Final result | 20 March 2026 (8 candidates empanelled) |
This drive is complete. The next CASE or a similar drive will be announced on the CSIR website, so keep checking the recruitment section there and treat any unofficial date as tentative.
CSIR SO vs CSIR ASO: Key Differences
SO and ASO are recruited through the same CASE exam and share Papers I, II and III, but the posts, pay and final stage differ. Testkart has a separate CSIR ASO page; the table below sums up how the two compare.
Point | CSIR Section Officer (SO) | CSIR Assistant Section Officer (ASO) |
|---|---|---|
Group | Group B (Gazetted) | Group B (Non-Gazetted) |
Pay level | Level 8 (Rs. 47,600 to Rs. 1,51,100) | Level 7 (Rs. 44,900 to Rs. 1,42,400) |
Final stage in CASE | Interview (100 marks, counted in merit) | Computer Proficiency Test (100 marks, qualifying only) |
Total merit marks in CASE | 600 | 500 |
CASE-2023 vacancies | 76 | 368 |
2026 UPSC CSE route | 8 posts; CSE-2024 marks plus CSIR interview (350 marks) | 100 posts (Advt. E-I/RC/2026/2); CSE-2024 marks plus qualifying CPT, no interview |
CASE-2023 final cut-off (UR) | 430.34 out of 600 | 348.05 out of 500 |
Age and qualification | Up to 33 years; university degree | Up to 33 years; university degree |
In CASE-2023, candidates gave their preference for posts (SO and ASO) and cadres in the application, and CSIR allocated them on merit and preference. Because SO is a higher post with fewer seats, its cut-off sits well above the ASO cut-off.

CSIR SO Exam Pattern
The CASE pattern below is from the CASE-2023 advertisement, the latest official CASE scheme.
Stage | Paper | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Stage I (CBT) | Paper I: General Awareness and English Language and Comprehension | 150 (100 + 50) | 150 | 2 hours |
Stage I (CBT) | Paper II: General Intelligence, Reasoning and Mental Ability (8 subjects) | 200 | 200 | 2 hours 30 minutes |
Stage II (pen and paper) | Paper III: Essay, Precis and Letter Writing | 4 | 150 | 2 hours |
Final stage | Interview (SO only) | Not applicable | 100 | Not applicable |
Total | 600 |
Objective papers carry 1 mark per question with a deduction of 0.33 marks for each wrong answer. Papers are bilingual except the English section of Paper I, and Paper III can be written in English or Hindi.
What this means for you:
Paper II is the biggest block: 200 of the 350 Stage I marks come from Paper II, so its eight subjects deserve the most practice time.
Guessing is costly: Three wrong answers wipe out roughly one correct answer, so attempt only questions you can narrow down.
Writing counts: Paper III adds 150 marks to the merit list, which is why regular essay practice separates selected candidates.
Some pages still show 0.25 negative marking or list the CPT as an SO stage. Follow the official advertisement. The full breakdown is on the CSIR SO exam pattern page.
CSIR SO Syllabus Summary
Paper | Subjects | Important areas |

Paper I | English Language and Comprehension (50 marks) | Comprehension, do as directed, prepositions, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, sentence correction, punctuation, idioms and phrases |
Paper II | 8 subjects of 25 marks each | Reasoning, arithmetic, general science, economic and social development with environment, ethics, decision making, management principles, national geography |
Paper III | Descriptive writing | Two essays (100 marks), one precis (30 marks), one letter or application (20 marks) |
The topic-wise checklist with suggested starting points is on the CSIR SO syllabus page.
CSIR SO Selection Process
Through CASE, the Section Officer selection runs in this order:
Stage I (Paper I and Paper II): Candidates must reach the minimum threshold in aggregate out of 350 to qualify for Stage II.
Stage II (Paper III): Candidates must reach the threshold in aggregate of Papers I, II and III (out of 500) to be called for interview.
Interview (100 marks): Held for SO candidates only.
Final merit (out of 600): Based on Papers I, II, III and the interview, followed by document verification and cadre allocation on merit and preference.
CSIR may normalise scores when the CBT runs in multiple shifts. For SO ties, CASE-2023 used higher written marks first, then fewer negative marks, then age. In the 2026 UPSC route, merit was the CSE-2024 total plus the 350-mark CSIR interview.
CSIR SO Salary and Career Growth

How to Prepare for CSIR SO
Stage I preparation
Build Paper II first: Reasoning and arithmetic need daily practice, while ethics, management and decision making reward concept clarity and case-style questions.
Read for General Awareness: Cover modern Indian history, polity and governance from standard books, and keep monthly current affairs notes.
Fix English basics: Grammar rules, vocabulary and one comprehension passage a day cover most of the 50 marks.
Stage II and interview preparation
Write weekly: One timed essay, one precis and one formal letter each week from the second month onward.
Know the organisation: Read about CSIR's role, laboratories and administrative structure before the interview.
Mock tests and official practice
CSIR does not publish a public mock test for CASE. For CASE-2023, the official Stage I notice said the mock test link would be emailed to registered candidates, so check your inbox and spam folder after applying. All official updates appear on the CSIR website.
