CSIR SO Eligibility : Age Limit, Qualification and Conditions

CSIR SO eligibility decides who can apply for the Section Officer post in the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. The core rules are simple: you must be an Indian citizen, hold a university degree in any discipline and be no older than 33 years on the closing date of the application, with relaxation for reserved categories. These rules have stayed the same in the CASE-2023 advertisement and the 2026 Section Officer drive.

What changes between drives is the route. CASE is open to all eligible graduates, while the 2026 drive (Advt. No. E-I/RC/2026/1) was open only to non-recommended candidates of the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024. This page explains every condition, the dates that decide eligibility, and the common reasons applications get rejected.

Dates That Decide Your Eligibility

CSIR checks age, qualification and category status against one date: the closing date of the online application. Everything you claim must be true on that day.

If the next notice keeps the same rule, your degree result, date of birth window and category certificates must all be valid on its closing date.

Educational Qualification

Both the CASE-2023 and 2026 advertisements ask for a "University Degree" for the Section Officer post. No stream, subject or minimum percentage is specified, so a graduate in arts, science, commerce, engineering or any other discipline can apply.

Points to check about your degree

  • Recognition: The degree must come from a university, institution or board recognised by the Government of India or approved by a regulatory body.

  • Result date: Your final result must be declared on or before the closing date of the application. CSIR treats the date of result declaration or mark sheet issue as the date of acquiring the qualification.

  • Final-year students: The advertisements do not offer provisional admission. If your result is not out by the closing date, you do not meet the condition for that cycle.

  • CGPA or grades: The 2026 advertisement asks candidates with CGPA or SGPA results to convert them to percentage using the formula of their own university.

  • Equivalent qualifications: If you claim an equivalent degree, you must cite the official order (authority, number and date) that declares it equivalent.

Age Limit and Relaxation

The upper age limit for CSIR SO is 33 years, counted on the closing date of the online application. In the 2026 drive, the reference date was 4 February 2026, so a general candidate had to be born on or after 5 February 1992 to be within the limit. Recalculate the date-of-birth window for each new notification.

The maximum age column assumes only one relaxation applies. PwBD relaxation is available only for a benchmark disability of at least 40 percent with a valid certificate. The 2026 advertisement also states that PwBD candidates in the "likely to improve" temporary category are not eligible for reservation.

Nationality and Other Conditions

  • Citizenship: Only Indian citizens can apply.

  • Government employees: Candidates working in central or state government bodies must produce a No Objection Certificate from their employer at document verification. Without it, candidature is not considered.

  • Lien and deputation: CSIR did not accept candidates on lien or deputation basis in CASE-2023.

  • One application: Only one application per candidate is allowed. In CASE-2023, the latest valid application was retained if a candidate submitted more than one.

  • Posting: Selected officers may be posted at CSIR headquarters in New Delhi or any CSIR laboratory in India, and serve a two-year probation.

CSIR advertisements do not mention an attempt limit. Your chances are limited only by the age limit and by whether CSIR notifies a drive.

Category Certificates You May Need

Reservation and age relaxation depend on valid certificates in the formats attached to the advertisement. A certificate in the wrong format is a common reason for losing a category claim.

Category

Document to keep ready

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)

OBC-NCL certificate in the central government format, valid on the closing date, plus the declaration form given in the advertisement

EWS

SC / ST

Caste certificate from the competent authority

PwBD

Disability certificate showing at least 40 percent benchmark disability

Ex-Servicemen

Discharge certificate or service proof

Government employees

No Objection Certificate from the employer (at document verification)

OBC candidates whose creamy-layer status has changed should get a fresh certificate before applying, because only the non-creamy layer is eligible for OBC relaxation.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Result pending: Candidates whose degree result is declared after the closing date.

  • Over age: Candidates above 33 years without a valid relaxation category, or whose category certificate is not in the prescribed format.

  • Unrecognised degree: Degrees from institutions not recognised by the Government of India or a regulatory body.

  • Wrong route: For drives restricted to UPSC CSE non-recommended candidates, anyone not on that list.

  • Missing NOC: Government employees who cannot produce a No Objection Certificate at document verification.

  • False information: Any false or suppressed information can lead to cancellation at any stage, even after joining.

How to Check Your Eligibility Step by Step

  1. Read the route: Check whether the new notice is an open CASE exam or a drive limited to a specific group, such as UPSC CSE non-recommended candidates.

  2. Note the closing date: Use it to calculate your age and confirm that your degree result was declared on or before it.

  3. Apply your relaxation: Add the years allowed for your category and check that your certificate is in the prescribed format and valid on the closing date.

  4. Check your documents: Keep your date of birth proof, degree certificate or mark sheet, category certificate and, if employed, an NOC request ready.

  5. Confirm on the official notice: Rules can change between cycles, so read the eligibility section of the new advertisement before paying the fee.
