Current Affairs Cut-off: How the Awareness Section Affects Your Result

There is no separate current affairs cut-off. No exam body declares a minimum score for "current affairs" on its own. What exists is a General Awareness, General Studies or Banking Awareness section whose marks feed into a sectional minimum, a combined section that must be qualified, or an overall cut-off. Understanding which of these applies to your exam tells you how much the awareness section can help or hurt you.

Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Treat any previous figure on this page as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above it rather than a bare pass.

How the Awareness Section Feeds the Cut-off

Exam (cycle)

How awareness marks count

Official qualifying rule

SSC CGL and CHSL (2026)

Tier-II General Awareness sits inside Section-II with English; each section must be qualified and Tier-II marks decide merit

Minimum 30 percent UR, 25 percent OBC and EWS, 20 percent others, in Tier-I and each Tier-II section

IBPS PO (CRP PO/MT-XVI)

Mains awareness test has its own minimum, plus a minimum total

Minimum score in each test, decided by IBPS based on vacancies

SBI PO (2026-27)

Mains awareness test has a sectional cut-off; no sectional cut-off in prelims

Sectional cut-offs decided by the bank

UPSC CSE prelims (2026)

Current events are part of GS Paper I, which alone sets the prelims cut-off

GS Paper II qualifying at 33 percent

RRB NTPC (CEN 05/2024)

General Awareness adds to the CBT total; no separate section minimum is stated

Minimum 40 percent UR and EWS, 30 percent OBC (NCL) and SC, 25 percent ST

The minimum percentages above are eligibility floors, not cut-offs. The actual cut-off for shortlisting or selection is usually well above them.

Worked example: SSC CGL Tier-II Section-II

Section-II of CGL 2026 carries 210 marks (English 135, General Awareness 75). At the 30 percent floor for UR candidates, you need at least 63 marks in the section as a whole. A candidate who scores 45 in English can still qualify the section with 18 or more net marks in General Awareness, which is just 6 correct answers with no wrong ones. The floor is easy to clear; the real contest is the merit cut-off, where every 3-mark awareness question moves your rank.

Previous Cut-off Reference: UPSC Prelims

UPSC publishes category-wise cut-off marks after the final result of a cycle. The figures below are the 2024 prelims cut-offs out of 200 in GS Paper I as widely reported from that release; they are indicative only, so check the official UPSC document before relying on them.

Category

Prelims cut-off 2024, GS Paper I (out of 200), indicative

General

87.98

EWS

85.92

OBC

87.28

Because current events run through the whole of GS Paper I, a candidate who is strong in current affairs and the static subjects linked to them is far better placed to cross this line.

What Affects the Cut-off

  • Paper difficulty: a tough awareness section lowers scores across the board and usually pulls sectional cut-offs down.

  • Vacancies: more posts mean more candidates shortlisted and generally lower cut-offs.

  • Applicants: a larger, better-prepared field pushes cut-offs up.

  • Normalisation: SSC and RRB normalise scores across shifts, so your raw score and your normalised score can differ.

Where to Find Official Cut-offs

SSC and RRB publish cut-offs with each stage result on their websites. IBPS shows sectional and overall cut-offs alongside scores in the candidate login after results. UPSC releases cut-off marks after the final result of the cycle on its official website. Use only these sources for your planning numbers.

How to Set Your Awareness Target

  1. Clear the floor first: in bank mains, never let the awareness test fall near the sectional minimum; it can end your attempt even with a strong total.

  2. Use it to lift your total: awareness questions are answered faster than reasoning or data interpretation questions, so this section is usually the most time-efficient place to add marks.

  3. Track a mock benchmark: note your awareness accuracy and score in every full mock, and aim to stay comfortably above the best available benchmark for your exam rather than chasing a guessed number.
