Current Affairs Exam Pattern : Section-Wise Guide by Exam
The current affairs exam pattern is not one pattern but several. Each recruiting body places current affairs inside its own section, with its own question count, time limit and negative marking: General Studies Paper I in UPSC prelims, General Awareness in SSC and railway exams, and General, Economy, Banking or Financial Awareness in bank mains.
This page sets out how that section is built in the 2026 cycle of each main exam, using the official notifications of UPSC, SSC, IBPS and SBI, and the last detailed RRB NTPC notice (CEN 05/2024). It then turns the numbers into strategy: marks per question, the cost of a wrong guess and the seconds you have for each question.

RRB NTPC Graduate CBT 2 (CEN 05/2024) | 50 of 120 | 50 | 90 minutes for the whole paper | One-third of a mark |
UPSC CSE prelims is not in this table because current affairs is not a separately timed section there; it runs through all of General Studies Paper I. The RRB section-wise distribution is described in the notice as indicative, so actual papers can vary slightly.
Key Points in the 2026 Notifications
IBPS names digital and RBI content: the CRP PO/MT-XVI notification titles the section "General/ Economy/ Banking Awareness/ Digital/ Financial Awareness including RBI circulars", so regulatory and digital banking news is explicitly in scope.
IBPS clerical recruitment is now CSA: the clerical cadre recruitment runs as CRP CSA-XVI for Customer Service Associates, and its mains awareness section has 40 questions in 20 minutes, the tightest time per question of the exams covered here.
SBI PO mains uses 170 questions: the 2026-27 advertisement sets the objective test at 170 questions for 200 marks plus a 30-mark descriptive test, with 60 awareness questions inside it.
SSC uses sectional timers: in Tier-II of both CGL and CHSL, General Awareness has its own 20-minute timer inside Section-II, so spare minutes cannot be carried across to English.
SSC merit is Tier-II only: the CGL 2026 notice states that the final merit list is based on Tier-II, which makes Tier-II General Awareness the version of the section that decides rank.
UPSC Civil Services: Where Current Affairs Sits
The 2026 prelims had two objective papers of 200 marks each, both two hours long. General Studies Paper I lists "current events of national and international importance" first in its syllabus, followed by history, geography, polity, economic and social development, environment and general science. General Studies Paper II (CSAT) is qualifying, with minimum qualifying marks of 33 percent, so GS Paper I alone decides who moves to mains.
Negative marking: one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for each wrong answer.
Mains: the Essay and four General Studies papers carry 250 marks each, and current issues run through all of them, especially GS papers on governance, international relations, economy, environment and security.
Personality test: the notice says the board also looks at a candidate's interest in current affairs.
SSC CGL and CHSL: General Awareness
SSC CGL 2026
Tier | Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Tier-I | General Awareness (one of four parts) | 25 | 50 | 1 hour for the tier, 15-minute timer per part |
Tier-II Paper-I | Section-II: English Language and Comprehension | 45 | 135 | 40-minute timer |
Tier-II Paper-I | Section-II: General Awareness | 25 | 75 | 20-minute timer |
Section-II total | English plus General Awareness | 70 | 210 | 1 hour |
Tier-I is qualifying, and the 2026 notice says the merit list is prepared on overall performance in Tier-II only. Candidates must qualify every section of Tier-II Paper-I separately, which means General Awareness shares a qualifying hurdle with English inside Section-II.
SSC CHSL 2026
Tier | Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Tier-I | General Awareness (one of four parts) | 25 | 50 | 60 minutes for the tier, 15-minute timer per part |
Tier-II | Section-II: English Language and Comprehension | 40 | 120 | 40-minute timer |
Tier-II | Section-II: General Awareness | 20 | 60 | 20-minute timer |
Section-II total | English plus General Awareness | 60 | 180 | 1 hour |
Bank Mains: Banking and Financial Awareness
None of the three bank preliminary exams in the 2026 cycle has an awareness section. Current affairs is tested in the mains, in a separately timed section.
Main exam test | IBPS PO (PO/MT-XVI) | SBI PO (2026-27) | IBPS CSA (CSA-XVI) |
|---|---|---|---|
Awareness section name | General/Economy/Banking Awareness, Digital/Financial Awareness including RBI circulars | General Awareness/Economy/Banking Knowledge | General/Financial Awareness |
Questions and marks | 50 for 60 | 60 for 60 | 40 for 50 |
Time | 35 minutes | 45 minutes | 20 minutes |
Objective paper total | 170 questions, 200 marks, 160 minutes | 170 questions, 200 marks, 3 hours | 160 questions, 200 marks, 125 minutes |
Current affairs also feeds the descriptive papers. The IBPS PO 2026 notice says its essay and comprehension paper may be broadly based on economic and social issues, emerging trends in banking and technology, current events and ethics. Both IBPS PO and SBI PO require a minimum score in each test of the mains, so a weak awareness score can end your attempt even with a strong total. Final merit uses mains and interview in an 80:20 ratio for IBPS PO, while SBI PO normalises mains to 75 and group exercise and interview to 25.
RRB NTPC: General Awareness
As per CEN 05/2024 (Graduate posts), CBT 1 had 100 questions of 1 mark each in 90 minutes, with 40 on General Awareness, 30 on Mathematics and 30 on General Intelligence and Reasoning. CBT 2 had 120 questions in 90 minutes: 50 General Awareness, 35 Mathematics and 35 Reasoning. CBT 1 is for screening, and normalised CBT 2 marks drive merit for most posts. The notice lists the General Awareness area in detail, from current events and sports to flagship government programmes and transport systems in India. Check the notice for your own cycle on the Railway Recruitment Boards portal.
State PSCs and Campus Placements
State public service commissions usually place current events of national, international and state importance inside their General Studies prelims paper, with weightage and marking set in each commission's notification. Campus placement tests have no common pattern: many written rounds test aptitude, reasoning, verbal ability and coding only, while group discussions, interviews and some public sector and management trainee tests bring in current affairs. Ask your placement cell for the test outline before you plan.
What the Pattern Means for You
Exam section | Marks per question | Penalty per wrong answer | Seconds per question |
|---|---|---|---|
SSC CGL Tier-II General Awareness | 3 | 1 | 48 |
SSC CHSL Tier-II General Awareness | 3 | 1 | 60 |
IBPS PO mains awareness | 1.2 | 0.30 | 42 |
SBI PO mains awareness | 1 | 0.25 | 45 |
IBPS CSA mains awareness | 1.25 | 0.31 | 30 |
Awareness is the fastest section: 30 to 60 seconds per question is plenty for recall, so aim to finish early and protect the clock in the next section where the timer allows it.
Guessing is break-even, not free: a blind guess among four options at a one-third penalty, or five options at a one-fourth penalty, has an expected value of zero. One confident elimination makes it positive.
SSC Tier-II rewards accuracy most: at 3 marks gained against 1 lost, three wrong answers wipe out one correct answer, so attempt only what you can narrow down.
Sectional minimums change priorities: in bank mains, a safe awareness score matters more than squeezing a few extra marks from reasoning.
Worked example: SSC CGL Tier-II General Awareness
Suppose you attempt 20 of the 25 questions and get 16 right and 4 wrong. You earn 16 x 3 = 48 marks and lose 4 x 1 = 4 marks, for a net score of 44 out of 75. If you had guessed the remaining 5 blindly, the expected gain would be about zero, but your score would swing by several marks either way. If you can eliminate one option in each of those 5, the expected gain becomes positive, so those are the ones worth attempting.
Exam-Day Strategy for the Awareness Section
First pass for sure answers: answer everything you know within 15 seconds and move on.
Second pass for eliminations: return to questions where you can rule out at least one option.
Leave pure guesses: under negative marking they add risk without expected gain.
Do not overthink dates: if two options look equally right, your first recall is usually better than a reconstructed guess.
