Delhi Police Driver Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, HMV Licence, Qualification and Physical Standards
Delhi Police Driver eligibility rests on five conditions: Indian citizenship, male gender, a 10+2 pass, a valid Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) driving licence and an age of 21 to 30 years, with relaxation for reserved and special categories. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) checks these at the application stage, and Delhi Police checks them again, along with physical and medical standards, before appointment to the post of Constable (Driver).
This page uses the rules from the notice for the Constable (Driver) - Male in Delhi Police Examination 2025, dated 24 September 2025. The next cycle may change the reference dates, so treat the dates here as the latest confirmed example and check the new notice when it is released. You will also find worked age examples, a pre-application checklist, the documents you need, and the most common reasons candidates are rejected.

Nationality and Gender
Only Indian citizens can apply. The notice states that the Constable (Driver) post is not suitable for female candidates or for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, so the recruitment is open to male candidates only.
If you are a woman interested in Delhi Police, look at the Delhi Police Constable eligibility and Delhi Police Head Constable eligibility guides on Testkart, since those posts follow different rules.
Educational Qualification
You must have passed 10+2 (Senior Secondary) or an equivalent examination from a recognised board. The key points are:
Crucial date: The qualification must be complete on or before the closing date of the online application. In the 2025 cycle, that date was 15 October 2025.
Result must be declared: Your result must be out by the closing date. A result still being processed does not count.
Equivalent qualifications: If you claim an equivalent board or course, you must show the order or letter that declares it equivalent, including the authority, number and date.
No minimum percentage: The notice asks only for a pass in 10+2. No stream or minimum percentage is prescribed.
HMV Driving Licence Requirement
The HMV licence is the condition that makes this exam different from other Delhi Police recruitments. Without it, you cannot apply.
Validity on the closing date: Your HMV licence must be valid on the closing date of the online application. A licence issued after that date will not make you eligible, even if you get it before the CBE.
No learner's licence: A learner's licence for heavy vehicles is not accepted.
Genuine licence only: Delhi Police verifies licences through DigiLocker and, where needed, through the transport ministry's records or its Special Branch. A forged or invalid licence leads to rejection.
Practical ability: The notice also expects confident heavy-vehicle driving and knowledge of vehicle maintenance. Both are tested in the trade test, where you drive an LMV and an HMV.
What this means for you: If you plan to apply in a future cycle and do not yet hold an HMV licence, start the licensing process early. Rules on minimum age, prior LMV experience and training for an HMV licence are set by transport authorities, so check them with your regional transport office. Also make sure your licence stays valid through the later stages, since it is checked again at document verification.
Age Limit
For the 2025 cycle, candidates had to be between 21 and 30 years old as on 1 July 2025. In terms of date of birth, you had to be born not earlier than 2 July 1995 and not later than 1 July 2004.
Category | Upper age limit | Born on or after |
|---|---|---|
UR / EWS | 30 years | 2 July 1995 |
OBC | 33 years | 2 July 1992 |
SC / ST | 35 years | 2 July 1990 |
All candidates must also be born on or before 1 July 2004 to meet the minimum age of 21. The date of birth in the Class 10 (Matriculation) certificate is the only one accepted, and it cannot be changed later.
Worked Age Examples
Born 10 March 1995, UR: Born before 2 July 1995, so over the age limit. Not eligible.
Born 10 March 1995, OBC: Within the OBC window, which starts from 2 July 1992. Eligible on age.
Born 20 August 2004, any category: Born after 1 July 2004, so under 21 on the reference date. Not eligible.
Age Relaxation
Code | Category | Upper age relaxation |
|---|---|---|
01 | SC/ST | 5 years |
02 | OBC | 3 years |
06 | Ex-servicemen | 3 years after deducting military service from actual age |
08 | Meritorious sportspersons (non-SC/ST) | 5 years |
09 | Meritorious sportspersons (SC/ST) | 10 years |
10 | Delhi Police departmental candidates (UR/EWS) | Up to 40 years |
11 | Delhi Police departmental candidates (OBC) | Up to 43 years |
12 | Delhi Police departmental candidates (SC/ST) | Up to 45 years |
Notes on Relaxation
Departmental candidates: Must have at least three years of continuous service in Delhi Police as on the closing date.
Sportspersons: Relaxation applies to those who represented a state or the country in recognised sports within the three years before the closing date, with the certificate in the prescribed format.
Ex-servicemen: Ten percent of posts are reserved for ESM. Serving defence personnel due for release within the period allowed in the notice need a certificate from their commanding officer.
EWS: There is no age relaxation for EWS candidates; they follow the UR upper limit.
How Ex-Servicemen Calculate Their Age
For ESM candidates, the relaxation works differently from other categories. Take your actual age on the reference date, subtract the length of your military service, and the result must not exceed the upper limit plus 3 years. For example, a UR ex-serviceman who is 40 on the reference date with 8 years of service has a calculated age of 32, which is within 30 plus 3. ESM candidates also have a separate list and cut-off, and they need the undertaking and discharge documents listed in the notice.
Physical Standards
Physical standards are checked at the PE&MT, held by Delhi Police after the CBE. They are part of eligibility, because failing them ends your candidature regardless of your CBE score.
Measurement Standards
Measurement | Standard | With relaxation |
|---|---|---|
Height | 170 cm | 165 cm |
Chest | 81 cm unexpanded, 85 cm expanded (minimum 4 cm expansion) | Relaxable by 5 cm |
The 5 cm relaxation applies to residents of hill areas, ST candidates, and sons of serving, retired or deceased Delhi Police personnel and Multi-Tasking Staff. You must produce the prescribed certificate at the PE&MT.
Endurance Standards
Age | 1,600 m race | Long jump | High jump |
|---|---|---|---|
Up to 30 years | 7 minutes | 12 feet 6 inches | 3 feet 6 inches |
Above 30 to 40 years | 8 minutes | 11 feet 6 inches | 3 feet 3 inches |
Above 40 years | 9 minutes | 10 feet 6 inches | 3 feet |
Full details of each event are on the Delhi Police Driver exam pattern page.
Medical Standards
General health: Candidates must be in sound health and free from any disease, defect or deformity.
Eyesight: Better eye 6/6 and worse eye 6/12 without glasses.
Colour vision: Must be free from colour blindness.
No relaxation: The notice does not allow relaxation of medical standards.
If you use glasses, get an eye check before applying, because the standard is without glasses. For a driving post, eyesight is not a formality.
Who Is Not Eligible
Female candidates: The post is for men only.
Persons with Benchmark Disabilities: The post is declared unsuitable for PwBD candidates.
Candidates without a valid HMV licence: Including those holding only an LMV or learner's licence on the closing date.
Candidates outside the age window: After applying any relaxation they are entitled to.
Candidates with a date of birth mismatch: Where the application does not match the Class 10 certificate.
Candidates debarred by SSC or a government body: For the period of the debarment.
How Eligibility Is Checked at Each Stage
SSC accepts applications provisionally, so passing the CBE does not confirm that you are eligible. Each later stage checks something specific, and a failure at any point ends your candidature.
Stage | What is checked | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
Online application (SSC) | Details you declare: age, education, licence, category | Application accepted provisionally; false claims are caught later |
PE&MT (Delhi Police) | Height, chest, race and jumps; relaxation certificates | Disqualified; same-day appeal only for height and chest |
Document verification (Delhi Police) | Class 10 and 12 certificates, HMV licence, category and relaxation documents | Candidature cancelled for missing or invalid documents |
Trade test (Delhi Police) | Actual LMV and HMV driving skill and maintenance knowledge | Not selected, whatever the CBE score |
Medical examination | General fitness, eyesight, colour vision | Declared unfit; no relaxation |
Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply
Check your HMV licence: Confirm it is issued and valid before the closing date and that your name and date of birth match your other documents.
Check your date of birth: Compare your Class 10 certificate with the age window for your category.
Check your 10+2 result: It must be declared before the closing date.
Collect category certificates early: OBC and EWS certificates must be in the format and validity period the notice specifies.
Measure yourself honestly: If you are close to 170 cm or 81 cm chest, plan for it now and keep any relaxation certificate ready.
Test your eyesight without glasses: A quick eye test can save you months of preparation for a post you cannot join.
