DRDO STA-B Eligibility 2026: Age, Qualification

DRDO STA-B eligibility rests on three checks: the right qualification for your post code, an age between 18 and 28 years on the crucial date, and Indian nationality. CEPTAM sets these rules in each advertisement for the Senior Technical Assistant-B post, and the latest cycle, CEPTAM-11, offered 561 STA-B posts across 17 disciplines.

The qualification rule is where most applicants go wrong. STA-B asks for a B.Sc or a Diploma in a specific subject, and a higher degree such as B.Tech, B.E. or M.Sc does not replace it. This page explains the discipline-wise qualification, the age limit and relaxations, nationality and other conditions, and the common reasons candidates are declared ineligible, so you can check your own position before the next CEPTAM cycle opens.

Educational Qualification

STA-B is a technician-level scientific post, so DRDO recruits it at the B.Sc or Diploma level. You need one of the following, depending on your post code:

  • B.Sc in the relevant subject: For science post codes such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology and Psychology. The subject must match the post code.

  • Diploma in the relevant branch: For engineering post codes such as Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science, Civil, Chemical and Metallurgical. Diplomas are expected to come from an AICTE-recognised institute or a state technical board.

Why a higher degree does not count

CEPTAM advertisements for STA-B state that a higher qualification is not a substitute for the essential qualification. A candidate who holds only a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, without a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, is not eligible for the Mechanical post code. If you hold both a Diploma and a B.Tech, you apply on the basis of the Diploma; check the advertisement for any declaration you must make about higher qualifications.

Result deadline

You must have passed the essential qualification by the crucial date. Candidates waiting for final results on that date are not eligible. Keep your final mark sheet and certificate, or a provisional certificate issued before the crucial date, ready for document verification.

Vacancy figures are as reported for CEPTAM-11 and add up to 561. A few pages show a different Psychology figure, so treat the discipline split as indicative. A B.Sc must usually include the relevant subject as a main subject; check the advertisement for any rule on how many years the subject was studied.

Age Limit and Crucial Date

The age limit for STA-B is 18 to 28 years. Age is counted on the crucial date stated in the advertisement, which was reported as 1 January 2026 for CEPTAM-11. All eligibility conditions, not only age, are judged on that date.

Item

Details

Minimum age

18 years on the crucial date

Maximum age (UR)

28 years on the crucial date

Crucial date (CEPTAM-11)

1 January 2026 (reported)

Proof of age

Class 10 certificate or equivalent

One aggregator listed the STA-B upper age limit as 25 years. Most coverage, including detailed relaxation tables, uses 18 to 28 years, so follow 28 years unless the advertisement for your cycle says otherwise. The date of birth recorded in your Class 10 certificate is the one that counts.

How to check your own age

Count your age in completed years on the crucial date, then compare it with the limit for your category. For example, with a crucial date of 1 January 2026, a UR candidate born in 1996 has already crossed 28 years and is over age, while an OBC-NCL candidate born in the same year is still within the relaxed limit of 31 years. Candidates close to either end of the range should check the exact birth-date window that CEPTAM prints in the advertisement, because one day can decide eligibility.

Age Relaxation

Upper age relaxation follows Government of India rules. The figures below are as reported for CEPTAM-11.

EWS candidates do not get age relaxation on the EWS basis alone. Relaxations do not combine beyond what the rules allow, and you must hold a valid certificate in the prescribed format for any category you claim.

Nationality and Other Conditions

  • Nationality: A citizen of India, or a person in the other categories permitted by Government of India rules, such as subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, with an eligibility certificate where required.

  • Category certificates: SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and PwBD claims must be backed by certificates in the central government format, valid as per the advertisement.

  • One post code: Each application is made for a specific post code. Read the advertisement for rules on applying for more than one post code.

  • Medical fitness: Appointment is subject to a medical examination.

  • Posting: Selected candidates can be posted to any DRDO laboratory or establishment in India, and coverage of CEPTAM-11 notes a minimum stay at the first posting.

There is no limit on the number of attempts for STA-B as long as you meet the age and qualification rules in each cycle.

Who Is Not Eligible

These are the common reasons STA-B applicants are rejected during document scrutiny or verification:

  • Only a higher degree: Holding B.Tech, B.E., M.Sc or PhD without the required Diploma or B.Sc.

  • Mismatched discipline: Applying for a post code whose subject does not match your Diploma branch or B.Sc subject.

  • Excluded courses: For Computer Science, BCA, MCA and DOEACC levels are reported as not accepted.

  • Late result: Passing the essential qualification after the crucial date.

  • Over age: Crossing the upper age limit on the crucial date without a valid relaxation.

  • Invalid certificates: Category or disability certificates in the wrong format or issued outside the allowed period.

DRDO's notice of 13 August 2026 said preliminary document scrutiny was under way for CEPTAM-11 before the Tier II result, which shows how closely eligibility is checked. Notice: https://drdo.gov.in/drdo/sites/default/files/announcement/Important_NoticeCEPTAM13082026.pdf
