ECGC PO Syllabus 2025-26: Test-Wise Topics and Study Plan
The ECGC PO syllabus is best understood test by test. ECGC Ltd. names five objective tests and a descriptive paper for Probationary Officers (Generalist), and each one has its own time limit. This page turns those test names into a topic checklist you can work through, along with a plan for covering it.
ECGC names the tests in its advertisement but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The topic lists below are built from the official test names and from the topics these tests usually cover in bank and insurance recruitment. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list.

Key points to know
There is no separate Stage 2 syllabus: the objective test and the descriptive paper are part of one online examination, followed by an interview.
Computer Knowledge is a separate test: it has only 20 marks but a strict 10-minute limit, so it rewards quick recall.
General Awareness leans on the employer's field: expect banking, insurance, economy and trade to matter more than a generic current-affairs list. This is our reading of the exam, not an official statement.
Older pages may still show a different pattern: follow the official advertisement, because the structure of the examination can be changed by ECGC.
Objective test syllabus
Test | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Reasoning Ability | Puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, inequalities, blood relations, direction sense, coding-decoding, order and ranking, input-output, data sufficiency | Seating arrangement and puzzles, which carry the most questions in bank-style papers |
English Language | Reading comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, sentence improvement, para jumbles, fill in the blanks, vocabulary | Reading comprehension, then grammar rules for error spotting |
Computer Knowledge | Computer fundamentals, hardware and software, MS Office, operating systems, networking, internet, database basics, cyber security, shortcut keys | Fundamentals and MS Office, then security and networking terms |
General Awareness | Banking and insurance awareness, economy, RBI and regulators, export and trade basics, schemes, current affairs of the last 6 to 8 months, static GK | Banking and insurance basics, then monthly current affairs |
Quantitative Aptitude | Data interpretation, number series, simplification and approximation, quadratic equations, percentage, ratio, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, speed and distance, mixture, probability | Simplification and number series for speed, then data interpretation |
Where the marks are
Reasoning Ability and Quantitative Aptitude carry 50 marks each, which is half of the 200 objective marks. Both reward steady daily practice more than last-minute study. English Language and General Awareness carry 40 marks each, and they are where reading habits show up in the score.
Computer Knowledge looks small, but a prepared candidate can score most of its 20 marks in a few minutes. That helps the total and it also helps you clear the sectional cut-off in that test.
Descriptive paper
The descriptive paper tests English writing and carries 40 marks. For Generalists it has an essay and a precis, each worth 20 marks, with one question to attempt from two options in each. Both must be completed within 40 minutes.
Task | What to prepare |
|---|---|
Essay writing | Common themes in banking, economy, trade, technology and social issues; a simple structure of introduction, two or three points and a conclusion |
Precis writing | Reducing a passage to about one third of its length without losing the main idea; practice with editorials and short reports |
The paper is evaluated only for candidates who clear the objective test and rank high enough, so the objective score decides whether your writing is read at all.
Specialist (Rajbhasha) stream
The Rajbhasha stream has a Professional Knowledge test of 50 questions in place of Computer Knowledge, and its descriptive paper has an essay in English and a translation task. The advertisement does not list the topics of Professional Knowledge, so we cannot give an official topic list. Candidates for this stream should expect Hindi and English language, translation and official language work, and should confirm the details in the information handout that ECGC issues with call letters.
Interview
The interview carries 60 marks and has no published syllabus. Prepare your graduation subjects, current affairs, basic banking and insurance concepts, what ECGC does for exporters, and your reasons for choosing the role. A short, honest answer is better than a memorised one.
How to cover the syllabus
Weeks 1 to 4: fundamentals of Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude, one hour of reading daily for English, and basics of computers.
Weeks 5 to 8: topic-wise tests in every section, monthly current-affairs notes, and 20-minute sectional tests for the 10 to 20 minute sections.
Weeks 9 to 12: advanced sets, essay and precis practice twice a week, and full revision of banking and insurance awareness.
Final weeks: full-length mocks in the exam sequence, same-day analysis and revision from your error log.
For topic-wise and full-length practice in the current pattern, you can attempt ECGC PO online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to decide which topic to revisit.
Check the official advertisement on ecgc.in before you start, because the company can change the examination structure.
