EMRS Hostel Warden Exam Pattern: Tier-I and Tier-II
The EMRS Hostel Warden exam pattern is built around two written tiers followed by document verification. Tier-I checks general ability in five parts. Tier-II checks whether you know child-safety law and can handle hostel administration. The recruitment is run by NESTS for Eklavya Model Residential Schools as part of the EMRS Staff Selection Examination (ESSE) 2025.
This page explains each stage, the marking scheme as reported, and what the pattern means for your preparation. NESTS names the parts and topics of each tier on its website. Question counts, marks, duration and negative marking were not visible on the official syllabus page, so those figures come from third-party reports and are marked tentative. Confirm them in the official information bulletin.
Table of Contents
Exam pattern at a glance
Stage | Format | Content | Status of details |
|---|---|---|---|
Tier-I | Objective, computer or OMR based (confirm in bulletin) | Five parts of general ability | Parts official, numbers tentative |
Tier-II | Post-specific written test | Child safety laws and administrative aptitude | Topics official, numbers tentative |
Document verification | Original documents checked | Eligibility proof | Schedule not announced |
Tier-I pattern
The five parts of Tier-I are named in the official ESSE syllabus for the Hostel Warden post. The question counts below come from a third-party report and are tentative.
Part | Subject | Questions (tentative) | Marks (tentative) |
|---|---|---|---|
I | General Awareness | 10 | 10 |
II | Reasoning Ability | 15 | 15 |
III | Knowledge of ICT | 15 | 15 |
IV | Quantitative Aptitude | 30 | 30 |
V | Language Competency | 30 | 30 |
Total | 100 | 100 |
Language Competency has three sub-parts: General English, General Hindi and one regional language chosen from the list of languages given by NESTS. The report splits the 30 questions equally, 10 for each.
The duration is not consistent across reports. One report puts the whole examination at 3 hours, another at 2 hours for Tier-I. Do not rely on either until you read the bulletin or your admit card.
Tier-II pattern
Tier-II is held for the Hostel Warden posts only. NESTS has confirmed in a notice that the Tier-II examination for Hostel Warden (Male) and Hostel Warden (Female) was conducted by CBSE in March 2026.
Block | What is tested |
|---|---|
Child safety laws | POCSO and other child-safety Acts of the Government of India, child policy, National Charter for Children |
Administrative aptitude | Handling large groups of students, safety and security, hostel inventory, cleanliness, record keeping |
Reports describe a mix of objective questions and descriptive questions, and one report says only candidates shortlisted from Tier-I at a ratio of about 1 to 10 against vacancies are called. Reports also disagree on marks and duration for this tier. Treat all of this as tentative.
Older pages may still show a different Tier-II format, so follow the official bulletin.
Marking scheme and negative marking
One report states plus one mark for each correct answer and a deduction of one-third mark for each wrong answer. Another report does not mention negative marking at all. Because of this conflict, read the instructions in your bulletin and admit card.
Correct answer: Marks as per the bulletin, reported as 1 mark in Tier-I.
Wrong answer: A deduction of one-third mark is reported, and it is not confirmed.
Unattempted question: Reports do not mention a deduction.
What the pattern means for you
Quantitative aptitude and language decide Tier-I: In the reported pattern, these two parts hold 60 of 100 questions, so give them the largest study share.
Guess with care: If negative marking applies, a random guess costs more than a skipped question. Guess only after you can remove at least one option.
ICT is a quick scorer: Fifteen questions on computer basics are easier to prepare than reasoning puzzles.
Tier-II is where you stand out: Many candidates ignore child-safety laws until late. Learning the Acts early gives you an advantage.
Choose your regional language wisely: Pick the language where you can answer grammar questions fast.
Later stage: document verification
After Tier-II, shortlisted candidates move to document verification. NESTS said in its notice of 25 September 2026 that the schedule would be announced later on its website. Keep your educational certificates, category certificate if applicable, photo ID and photographs ready. The reports we reviewed do not mention an interview or a skill test for Hostel Warden.
Final selection
Selection is based on performance in the written tiers and verification of documents. The exact weightage of Tier-I and Tier-II in the final merit list is not confirmed in the sources we could verify, so we are not giving a worked example. Check the bulletin for how merit is calculated and how ties are broken.
Time management and exam-day strategy
Scan first: Spend the first minutes on the parts you can finish fastest, such as ICT and general awareness.
Set a time budget: Give each part a target time and move on if a question takes too long.
Leave puzzles for later: Seating and puzzle sets take time. Attempt them after the easy reasoning questions.
Keep ten minutes for review: Re-check marked questions, not every answer.
Read instructions twice: Check the marking rule and sectional rules on the day.
Where to verify the pattern
NESTS publishes the information bulletin, syllabus and notices on nests.tribal.gov.in. Check the ESSE section for any corrigendum before you finalise your plan.
