EMRS PGT Eligibility 2025-26: Qualification, Age Limit and Relaxation
EMRS PGT eligibility is set by the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) in its information bulletin for the EMRS Staff Selection Exam (ESSE). To apply for a Post Graduate Teacher post in an Eklavya Model Residential School, you need a Master's degree in the subject with at least 50% marks, a B.Ed or an approved integrated teacher-education degree, and an age of not more than 40 years, subject to relaxations.
This page explains each condition from the ESSE 2025 bulletin, including subject-wise degree rules, age relaxations, certificate dates and common reasons candidates turn out to be ineligible. In ESSE 2025, every condition was checked as on 23 October 2025, and the same date was kept even after the application deadline was extended to 28 October 2025.

Educational Qualification
The bulletin allows four routes to the essential qualification. Every route needs at least 50% marks, and teacher-education degrees must come from an NCTE-recognised institution.
Route | What you need | Minimum marks |
|---|---|---|
1. Integrated postgraduate course | An integrated PG course in the concerned subject, with a B.Ed component, from an NCTE-recognised institution | 50% in aggregate |
2. Master's plus B.Ed | A Master's degree in the subject from a recognised institution, and a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution | 50% in the Master's and 50% in the B.Ed |
3. Integrated B.Ed-M.Ed | A three-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution, listed as an alternative to the B.Ed | 50% |
4. Four-year integrated degree | A four-year integrated graduation degree including a B.Ed component, from an NCTE-recognised institution, listed as an alternative to the B.Ed | 50% |
In practice, most candidates use route 2. The bulletin places routes 3 and 4 after the B.Ed line as alternatives, and does not spell out whether a subject Master's is still needed with them. If you plan to apply through either route, read the exact wording in the bulletin and keep your subject mark sheets ready.
Points That Often Cause Confusion
50% is a hard minimum: The bulletin states "at least 50% marks" and does not list a lower percentage for reserved categories for this qualification. It also does not state a rounding rule, so 49.6% should not be assumed to count as 50%.
Aggregate means the whole degree: The percentage is the aggregate of your Master's degree, not one semester or one paper.
Results must be in hand by the cut-off date: You must hold the required certificates on the notified date. If your final result was declared after 23 October 2025, you were not eligible for ESSE 2025.
No CTET for PGT: CTET Paper II is required for TGT posts, not PGT. Older pages that list CTET for PGT are incorrect for ESSE 2025.
Subject-wise Degree Requirements
PGT subject | Master's degree required | Condition at graduation |
|---|---|---|
English | English | None stated |
Hindi | Hindi | None stated |
Physics | Physics or any specialisation in Physics | Physics studied at graduation |
Chemistry | Chemistry or any specialisation in Chemistry | Chemistry studied at graduation |
Mathematics | Mathematics or any specialisation in Mathematics | Mathematics studied at graduation |
Economics | Economics or any specialisation in Economics | Economics studied at graduation |
Biology | Biology, Zoology or Botany, or any specialisation in them | Biology, Zoology or Botany studied at graduation |
History | History or any specialisation in History | History studied at graduation |
Geography | Geography or any specialisation in Geography | Geography studied at graduation |
Commerce | Commerce | Accountancy and Business Studies studied at graduation; M.Com in Economics is not eligible |
Computer Science | M.Sc (Computer Science or IT), MCA, or M.E./M.Tech (Computer Science or IT), with at least 50% marks | None stated; B.Ed needed for future promotion |
What This Means for Common Profiles
M.Sc Zoology or Botany: Eligible for PGT Biology, provided Biology, Zoology or Botany was a graduation subject, and you hold a B.Ed.
M.Sc Applied Mathematics: Counts only if it qualifies as a specialisation in Mathematics and you studied Mathematics at graduation. Keep your mark sheets ready to show this.
M.Com in Economics: Not eligible for PGT Commerce under the bulletin note.
MCA without B.Ed: Eligible for PGT Computer Science at entry. You will need a B.Ed later for promotion.
M.A. English with a non-English B.A.: The bulletin states only a Master's in English for PGT English, without a graduation condition. Confirm with your documents and the bulletin text.
Desirable Qualifications
These are not compulsory, but the bulletin lists them as desirable for PGT:
TGT experience: Experience as a TGT in the concerned subject in a recognised institution.
Residential school experience: Experience of working in a residential school.
Computer skills: Knowledge of computer applications.
Since the PGT merit list is based on Tier 2 marks, desirable qualifications do not add marks. They describe the profile NESTS prefers for teachers in residential tribal schools.
Age Limit and Relaxation
The upper age limit for PGT is 40 years as on 23 October 2025. After every relaxation, no candidate may be older than 55 years on that date.
Category | Upper age relaxation | Maximum age |
|---|---|---|
General (UR) and EWS | None | 40 years |
OBC (NCL) | 3 years | 43 years |
SC and ST | 5 years | 45 years |
Women (all categories), PGT and TGT posts | 10 years | 50 years |
PwBD (General) | 10 years | 50 years |
PwBD (OBC) | 13 years | 53 years |
PwBD (SC and ST) | 15 years | 55 years |
Central Government employees with 3 years' continuous service in the same or allied cadre | 5 years | 45 years |
Persons ordinarily domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir, 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989 | 5 years | 45 years |
EMRS employees (regular, and non-permanent staff working as on 1 July 2025) | Up to 55 years including all relaxations | 55 years |
The maximum-age column is worked out from the 40-year limit for easy reference; the bulletin itself states the relaxations in years.
How the Relaxations Work Together
Not added together: If you fall in more than one category, you get only the single concession with the highest limit, not the sum. For example, an SC woman gets the 10-year women's relaxation, not 5 plus 10.
Women with disabilities: The 10-year women's relaxation does not apply to a woman with a disability; she gets the disability relaxation for her category instead.
Ex-servicemen: Those with at least six months of continuous service in the Armed Forces can deduct that service from their actual age. If the result is not more than three years above the maximum age, they are treated as meeting the age limit.
EMRS staff: The 55-year provision relaxes age only. It does not relax the qualification required for the post.
Nationality, Language and Other Conditions
Nationality: Only Indian citizens can apply.
Teaching languages: Proficiency in teaching in both English and Hindi is required for all teaching posts.
Language section in Tier 1: You must score at least 8 out of 20 in General English and General Hindi together, or the rest of your Tier 1 paper is not evaluated.
All-India posting: Selected teachers can be posted to any EMRS in the country, at the discretion of NESTS, and requests for a change of station are not entertained.
Local language test: You must learn the local language of your place of posting and pass a proficiency test conducted by NESTS within the two-year probation.
Probation: Two years, extendable at the discretion of the competent authority.
Reservation and Category Certificates
Reservation follows Government of India rules. Your category certificate must match the rules in the bulletin, or your category claim can be rejected at document verification.
Category | Certificate rule in ESSE 2025 |
|---|---|
OBC (NCL) | Non-creamy layer certificate issued on the basis of income for financial year 2024-25 |
EWS | Income and asset certificate based on financial year 2024-25 income, held as on the application cut-off date; family income below Rs. 8 lakh with the asset limits in the bulletin |
SC and ST | Valid caste certificate as required by the bulletin |
PwBD | Disability certificate, plus a certificate from a Civil Surgeon or Chief Medical Officer on functional requirements if shortlisted |
The EWS asset limits exclude families with 5 acres or more of agricultural land, a residential flat of 1,000 square feet or more, or residential plots above the stated sizes in notified municipalities and other areas. Check the bulletin for the exact thresholds.
Eligibility for PwBD Candidates
The PGT post is identified as suitable for these categories of benchmark disability:
Visual: Blind and low vision.
Hearing: Deaf and hard of hearing.
Locomotor: One arm, both arms, one leg, both legs, one arm and one leg, both legs and one arm, cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism and acid attack victims.
Other categories: Autism spectrum disorder (mild), specific learning disability and mental illness.
Multiple disabilities: Combinations of the above.
The functional requirements listed for PGT include sitting, standing, walking, bending, seeing, hearing, reading and writing, communication and manipulation with fingers. PwBD candidates can get a scribe where eligible and 20 minutes of compensatory time for every hour of the exam.
Who Is Not Eligible
Below 50% in the Master's or B.Ed: Even 49% in either degree makes you ineligible.
No B.Ed or approved integrated course: Except for PGT Computer Science, a Master's alone is not enough.
Wrong subject at graduation: For most science and humanities subjects, the PGT subject must have been studied at graduation.
M.Com in Economics for PGT Commerce: Specifically excluded.
Result after the cut-off date: Qualifications completed after 23 October 2025 did not count for ESSE 2025.
Over age: Above 40 years without a valid relaxation, or above 55 years with any relaxation.
Category certificate in the wrong format or year: An OBC or EWS certificate not based on 2024-25 income can lead to the candidate being treated as unreserved or rejected.
Fee and Documents
Category | Total fee (ESSE 2025) |
|---|---|
Female, SC, ST, PwBD | Rs. 500 (processing fee only) |
All other candidates | Rs. 2,000 (Rs. 1,500 application fee plus Rs. 500 processing fee) |
At document verification, bring the application confirmation page, original certificates and self-attested copies for age, qualification, experience, caste, OBC non-creamy layer, EWS and disability, as applicable.
