English Exam Pattern for Bank Exams 2026: Exam-wise Guide
The English exam pattern for bank exams changes from one recruiter to the next. IBPS, SBI and RBI all include an English test, but the number of questions, the marks per question, the sectional time and the qualifying rules differ, and some exams add a typed descriptive paper. This page sets out the pattern of the English section in each major banking exam for the 2026 cycles, taken from the official notifications.
The key changes this cycle are in the officer exams. SBI PO now tests communication skills (emails, situation analysis, report or precis) in a 30-mark descriptive paper, and both IBPS PO and SBI PO give 40 mains English questions only 20 marks. Knowing these numbers helps you decide how much time English deserves in each paper.
English Pattern

|---|---|---|---|---|
IBPS PO | Prelims, Mains, Descriptive | Objective and typed | 30 / 20 / 25 | Mains and descriptive, yes; prelims, no |
IBPS Clerk | Prelims, Mains | Objective | 30 / 40 | Mains only |
IBPS RRB Officer Scale I, Office Assistant | Mains (English or Hindi) | Objective | 40 | Yes |

Mains English Pattern
Exam (cycle) | Test name | Questions | Marks | Time | Mains objective total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
IBPS PO | English Language | 40 | 20 | 35 min | 170 Qs, 200 marks, 160 min |
IBPS Clerk | General English | 40 | 40 | 35 min | 160 Qs, 200 marks, 125 min |
IBPS RRB Officer Scale I and Office Assistant | English Language or Hindi Language | 40 | 40 | 30 min | 200 Qs, 200 marks, 120 min |
SBI PO | English Language | 40 | 20 | 40 min | 170 Qs, 200 marks, 3 hours |
SBI Clerk | General English | 40 | 40 | 35 min | 190 Qs, 200 marks, 2 hr 40 min |
RBI Assistant | Test of English Language | 40 | 40 | 30 min | 200 Qs, 200 marks, 135 min |
The IBPS RRB single exam for Officer Scale II (General Banking) and Scale III also has a 40-question, 40-mark English or Hindi Language test in 30 minutes. The Scale II specialist papers give it 20 marks.
Descriptive English Pattern
Exam | Paper | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
IBPS PO | Descriptive Paper (essay and comprehension) | 2 | 25 | 30 min |
SBI PO | Communication Skills (emails, situation analysis, report or precis) | 3 | 30 | 30 min |
RBI Grade B General | Paper II: English (Writing Skills) | 3 | 100 | 90 min |
All three are typed on the computer. The SBI PO descriptive test starts immediately after the objective test, making the full main exam 230 marks in 3 hours 30 minutes. IBPS PO runs the objective and descriptive parts for a total of 3 hours 10 minutes.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Every objective English test listed here deducts one-fourth of the marks assigned to a question for each wrong answer. A question left blank carries no penalty. Descriptive papers have no negative marking.
Test | Marks per question | Penalty per wrong answer |
|---|---|---|
Prelims English (all exams above) | 1 | 0.25 |
IBPS PO and SBI PO mains English | 0.5 | 0.125 |
IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk, RBI Assistant, IBPS RRB mains English | 1 | 0.25 |
Scores from different shifts are normalised by the equi-percentile method in IBPS and RBI exams, so your reported English score can differ slightly from your raw count.
What the Pattern Means for You
Prelims time is tight: 30 questions in 20 minutes gives you 40 seconds each; SBI PO's 40 questions give you only 30 seconds. Read the passage once and move.
A wrong guess costs a quarter: Four wrong answers wipe out one correct answer, so attempt where you can eliminate at least two options.
Officer mains English is about clearing, not scoring: With 20 marks for 40 questions, aim for steady accuracy and save effort for higher-weight sections and the descriptive paper.
Clerical mains English is a scoring test: At 40 marks out of 200, a strong English score in IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk or RBI Assistant directly lifts your merit rank.
A quick example shows the effect. In IBPS Clerk prelims, attempting 26 English questions with 22 correct gives 22 minus 1 (four wrong answers at 0.25 each), so 21 out of 30. Attempting all 30 with 23 correct gives 23 minus 1.75, so 21.25. The extra four attempts added only a quarter mark while taking time from the passage. Attempt more only when your accuracy in practice stays above about 80%.
Sectional Qualifying Rules
Exam | Prelims | Mains |
|---|---|---|
IBPS PO | Qualify in each of the three tests | Minimum in each test and in total |
IBPS Clerk | Qualify in each of the three tests | Minimum in each test and in total |
IBPS RRB | No English | Minimum in each test |
SBI PO | No sectional cut-off | Minimum in each test, including descriptive |
SBI Clerk | No individual or aggregate minimum prescribed | Aggregate minimum only, no subject minimum |
RBI Assistant | Qualify in each test | Qualify in each test |
RBI Grade B | Minimum in each Phase I test and aggregate | Aggregate of Phase II for interview shortlisting |
Language of the English Test
The English test is the one section that is never translated. IBPS, SBI and RBI set every other section bilingually (and, for clerical and RRB exams, in some regional languages as well), but the English Language or General English test is set in English only. In RBI Grade B, all papers except English are bilingual in Hindi and English, and candidates may type the other Phase II descriptive answers in Hindi, but Paper II must be written in English.
IBPS RRB is the only exception in choice: in the main or single exam you opt for either English Language or Hindi Language. Both carry the same questions count, marks and time, so pick the language in which you read fastest and make fewer grammar errors, and prepare only that one.
Later Stages: Interview and Language Tests
Interviews: IBPS PO (100 marks), SBI PO (group exercise 20 and interview 30), IBPS RRB officers and RBI Grade B (75 marks) all end with an interview. There is no English test at this stage, but clear spoken English helps.
Personality and psychometric tests: IBPS PO, SBI PO and RBI Grade B use a personality or psychometric assessment before the interview; it carries no marks.
Local language tests: IBPS Clerk and SBI Clerk hold a local language proficiency test, and RBI Assistant holds a qualifying Language Proficiency Test, after the main exam. These test the state language, not English.
Final Merit and Where English Fits
SBI PO gives a clear worked example. Main exam marks (200 objective plus 30 descriptive, so 230) are converted to 75, and Phase III (20 for group exercise, 30 for interview, so 50) is converted to 25. If you score 120 in the objective test and 18 in the descriptive test, your main exam total is 138 out of 230, which converts to 45 out of 75. Within that, English objective carries 20 marks and the descriptive paper 30, so writing has more weight than the objective English test.
In IBPS PO, the main exam and interview are combined in an 80:20 ratio. In RBI Grade B, Phase II (300 marks across three papers) is added to the 75-mark interview, so the 100-mark English writing paper is a third of your written score. In IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk and RBI Assistant, mains marks alone decide the merit list, after any language test.
Time Management on Exam Day
First pass: Attempt fillers, error spotting and connectors first, as they take 20 to 30 seconds each.
Second pass: Take up the comprehension passage, reading the questions before the passage.
Last minutes: Use any spare time on para jumbles, where one correct opening sentence often unlocks the order.
Descriptive paper: Spend two to three minutes outlining each answer before typing, and keep a minute to check spelling.
