Good English study notes for bank exams are short, personal and built around your mistakes. Unlike general awareness, English is a skill, so notes cannot replace practice. What they can do is hold the grammar rules you keep forgetting, the words you met in passages, the formats for the descriptive paper and the errors you made in mocks, in a form you can revise in 20 minutes before an IBPS, SBI or RBI exam.
This page shows what to put in your English notes, how to organise them, how often to revise them, which sources to build them from, and how they fit with mock tests.
What to Include in Your English Notes
Section | What to note | Format |
|---|---|---|
Grammar | Rules for agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions, pronouns, modifiers and comparisons, each with one correct and one incorrect example | One page per rule area |
Vocabulary | Words from editorials and passages, with meaning, one sentence and any common collocation | Running list, 10 to 15 words a day |
Phrasal verbs and idioms | Those seen in cloze tests and fillers, with the sentence where you met them | Grouped by verb (bring, carry, put) |
Confusing words | Pairs such as affect and effect, principal and principle, complement and compliment | Two-column table |
Question strategies | Your own steps for para jumbles, cloze and comprehension | Short checklists |
Descriptive formats | Structures for essay, email, situation analysis, report and precis | One template each |
Error log | Every mock mistake, with the rule or reason | Date, question type, error, correction |
How to Organise Your Notes
Short notes, not copies: Write each rule in one or two lines in your own words. If a page runs long, it is a textbook, not a note.
Separate sheets by type: Keep grammar, vocabulary and the error log apart so you can revise one area in a short slot.
Error log at the centre: After each mock, add every wrong English answer. Mark a rule each time it reappears; anything marked three times needs targeted practice.
Monthly reading notes: From editorials on banking, economy and social issues, note two or three points per topic. These double as material for IBPS PO and RBI Grade B essays.
Descriptive templates: For SBI PO, keep one email layout (subject, greeting, purpose, details, request, closing) and one situation analysis structure (problem, options, decision, reason).
A Sample Grammar Note
Here is how one rule should look in your notes, short enough to read in seconds.
Rule | Wrong | Right |
|---|---|---|
"One of the" takes a plural noun and a singular verb | One of the officer have resigned. | One of the officers has resigned. |
"Each" and "every" take a singular verb | Each of the branches have a manager. | Each of the branches has a manager. |
"Prefer" takes "to", not "than" | She prefers tea than coffee. | She prefers tea to coffee. |
"Superior" and "inferior" take "to" | This plan is superior than the old one. | This plan is superior to the old one. |
No future tense after "if" or "when" for a future condition | If the bank will raise rates, loans will cost more. | If the bank raises rates, loans will cost more. |
Note Priorities by Exam
IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk and RBI Assistant: Weight your notes towards grammar rules, confusing words and fillers, since mains English carries 40 marks and rewards rule-based accuracy.
IBPS PO and SBI PO: Add notes on comprehension strategy and new-pattern questions, plus a bank of essay points and email or situation analysis templates for the descriptive paper.
IBPS RRB: If you choose English in mains, keep notes compact and practice-led; if you choose Hindi, build the same structure in Hindi.
RBI Grade B: Phase II English is a 100-mark writing paper, so your notes should hold essay outlines, precis practice records and points on economy and finance topics.
Common Note-making Mistakes
Copying whole chapters: Long notes are never revised. Keep each rule to a line or two with an example.
Word lists without sentences: A word without a usage example rarely helps in cloze or word usage questions.
Never updating the error log: The log is useful only if every mock adds to it.
Revision Schedule
Daily (15 to 20 minutes): The day's vocabulary list and one grammar sheet.
Weekly: The full error log, plus all words added that week. Strike out anything you now get right every time.
Monthly: All grammar sheets and descriptive templates, followed by a timed sectional test to check retention.
Final two weeks: Only the error log, confusing words and templates. Do not start new material.
Sources to Build Your Notes From
Official notifications: The test names, marks and descriptive formats in the IBPS, SBI and RBI notifications tell you what to prepare.
Previous year papers: The most reliable guide to question style and level.
Newspaper editorials: The best daily source for reading speed, vocabulary and essay ideas.
A standard grammar reference: Use one book consistently rather than switching between several.
Your own mocks: Your wrong answers are the most valuable notes you will make.
Check the current pattern before you build descriptive templates. The SBI PO 2026-27 notification on the SBI careers page lists emails, situation analysis and report or precis, and the IBPS PO notification on ibps.in lists essay and comprehension.
Where Notes Fit With Mock Tests
Notes and mocks work as a loop. You take a mock, log the mistakes, revise the relevant note, and check in the next mock whether the mistake has gone. Without mocks, notes turn into passive reading; without notes, the same mistakes repeat.
