UPSC ESE Cut-Off: 2025 Marks by Stream and Category
The UPSC ESE cut off is published in three parts for each engineering discipline and category: the minimum Prelims score out of 500, the minimum written score (Prelims plus Mains) out of 1,100, and the marks of the last recommended candidate out of 1,300. UPSC releases all three only after the final result of a cycle.
The latest official figures are for ESE 2025, published with the final result in December 2025. The ESE 2026 cut-off will follow its final result. Use the tables below to set a realistic target for ESE 2027.

What Affects the ESE Cut Off
Vacancies in your discipline: Civil had 251 vacancies in 2025 against 72 in Mechanical, so seat count shapes the competition more than paper difficulty alone.
Paper difficulty: UPSC does not normalise marks, so a harder technical paper lowers raw cut-offs directly.
Number of serious candidates: More well-prepared candidates in a discipline push the last recommended score up.
Interview scores: The final cut-off includes 200 Personality Test marks, so it can shift even when written scores are similar.
How to Set Your ESE 2027 Target
Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Treat these figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them rather than a bare pass.
Plan for the highest recent figure: For General category Mechanical, that means a final target of about 760 or more; for Civil, about 780.
Build a written buffer: Aim for a written score 40 to 50 marks above the last written cut-off, so an average interview does not push you out.
Do not neglect Prelims: Prelims marks carry into the final total, so every extra mark there counts twice: once for qualifying and once for rank.
