GATE EC Eligibility Criteria 2027: Qualification, Year of Study and Age Limit

GATE EC eligibility for 2027 is set by IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE. The rules are broad: if you are in the third or higher year of an undergraduate degree, or have already completed a government-approved degree, you can usually appear for the Electronics and Communication Engineering paper. There is no age limit and no limit on the number of attempts.

This page sets out the degree-wise eligibility table, the rules for candidates with professional certifications or foreign degrees, nationality and exam centre rules, and the difference between being eligible for GATE and being eligible for an M.Tech seat or a PSU post. Registration for GATE 2027 closed in October 2026, so this page is also useful for checking whether your application matches the rules before the admit card is issued.

What this means for EC aspirants

  • B.Tech ECE students: You can appear from your third year. Many students take GATE in the third year for practice and again in the final year for admissions or PSU applications, since the score is valid for three years.

  • Final-year students: You do not need your degree certificate to appear. Institutes will ask for proof of the degree at the admission stage.

  • Graduates and working professionals: A completed B.E. or B.Tech makes you eligible regardless of the year you graduated.

  • M.Sc Electronics or Physics students: You are eligible from the first year of the M.Sc, and the EC or PH paper may suit your target programme.

Candidates who are pursuing or already hold a higher degree are also allowed to appear. The official rules also note that holders of a 3-year B.Sc, B.A. or B.Com may apply if they wish to pursue master's programmes at the IITs and IISc.

Professional Society Certifications

Some candidates qualify through professional body examinations instead of a university degree. Certifications from the following bodies count only if the Ministry of Education, AICTE, UGC or UPSC has approved them as equivalent to a B.E., B.Tech, B.Arch or B.Planning:

  • Engineering bodies: The Institution of Engineers (India), the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE).

  • Other bodies: The Aeronautical Society of India, the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Indian Institute of Metals and the Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers.

For EC aspirants, IETE membership routes are the most relevant. Keep the equivalence approval and your Section A or equivalent result ready, as you may need to show them during scrutiny or admission.

Candidates with Foreign Degrees

Candidates whose qualifying degree is from a university outside India must be in the third or higher year of a Bachelor's degree, or must have completed a Bachelor's degree of at least three years, in engineering, technology, science, arts, commerce or a related field.

Note that GATE 2027 has no international exam centres. Candidates studying or living abroad must travel to a centre in India to take the exam.

Age Limit and Number of Attempts

There is no age limit to appear for GATE 2027. The official documents do not set any limit on the number of times you can take the exam either.

M.Tech or PhD admission using GATE

Set by each institute, if any

PSU recruitment using GATE

Set by each PSU in its own advertisement, with category relaxations as per its rules

If you are targeting PSU posts, check the age limit and relaxations in each PSU's notification before relying on your GATE score. These rules vary by company and post.

Nationality, Exam Centres and Identity Rules

  • Indian nationals: Registration through DigiLocker was mandatory, along with facial registration. A verified DigiLocker account is recommended, and the account used to apply must not be deleted, because further communication is sent only to it.

  • Foreign nationals: The fee table includes foreign nationals in the higher fee category. Since there are no international centres, they must take the exam at a centre in India.

  • Exam cities: GATE 2027 is held at centres in more than 300 cities across India. City allotment is due on 4 January 2027.

  • PwD candidates: Candidates with benchmark disabilities can claim the lower fee and, where eligible, compensatory time of one hour. A valid disability certificate or UDID card is needed.

Choosing the EC Paper and a Second Paper

The eligibility rules do not tie the GATE paper to the branch of your degree. In practice, institutes and PSUs ask for a GATE paper that matches the discipline of the programme or post, so ECE and related-branch students normally take EC.

You may also take a second paper from the allowed combinations. As per the tentative list in the GATE 2027 information brochure, EC can be combined with CS, DA, EE, IN, PH and RA. A second paper doubles the fee, so choose one only if it opens a programme or PSU route you actually want.

Special Cases

Situation

What the rules mean for you

Lateral-entry B.Tech (after diploma)

Eligibility follows your year of study in the degree, so you qualify once you are in the third year or higher

Dual degree or 5-year integrated M.Tech

Eligible from the third year of the programme

Pending backlogs

The official table defines eligibility by year of study and does not mention backlogs; if you are unsure, check the GATE 2027 FAQs or contact the official helpdesk

Career gap after graduation

No effect on GATE eligibility, since there is no age limit or graduation-year limit

Already holding an M.Tech

Eligible; candidates who hold a higher degree may appear, for example for PhD admission or PSU applications

GATE Eligibility vs Admission and PSU Eligibility

Being eligible to write GATE is only the first step. Admission and recruitment have their own, stricter rules.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • First- and second-year students: B.E. and B.Tech students below the third year cannot appear.

  • Diploma-only candidates: A diploma by itself is not one of the listed qualifying degrees. Candidates in a lateral-entry B.Tech become eligible once they reach the third year of the degree.

  • Unapproved certifications: Professional body certifications without the required equivalence approval do not qualify.

  • Candidates with unresolved defects: Applications with scrutiny defects that were not corrected in the rectification window (14 October to 3 November 2026) may be rejected.

Fee and Document Requirements

The fee is charged per paper. Female, SC, ST and PwD candidates paid Rs. 1,000 in the regular period and Rs. 1,500 in the extended period and special window. All other candidates, including foreign nationals, paid Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 2,500 respectively. Two papers cost twice the single-paper fee.
