Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering EC
GATE EC is a recruitment exam conducted by Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, relevant to engineering graduates targeting technical government and PSU roles.
GATE EC is the Electronics and Communication Engineering paper of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. GATE is a national-level qualifying examination, not a recruitment exam. It is conducted jointly by IISc Bangalore and the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Ministry of Education, Government of India. For the GATE 2027 cycle, IIT Madras is the organising institute.
A valid GATE EC score is used for M.Tech, M.E., MS and direct PhD admissions, for postgraduate scholarships, and by several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in their own recruitment. This page brings together the GATE EC 2027 dates, eligibility, fee, exam pattern, syllabus, qualifying cut-offs and a practical preparation plan. Registration for GATE 2027 has closed, so the focus now is on the exam in February 2027.

What Is New in GATE 2027
IIT Madras has announced a few cycle-level changes. Most of them affect other papers, but two matter directly to EC candidates.
Revised syllabi: The syllabi for the GATE 2027 papers have been revised, the first full revision in about five years. Always study from the GATE 2027 EC syllabus PDF on the official site, not an older copy.
New Robotics and Automation (RA) paper: RA is introduced from GATE 2027 and is listed as an allowed second paper with EC.
Paper code changes: Textile Engineering and Fibre Science is now a section within Engineering Sciences (XE), and the XE, XH and XL section codes have changed. These do not affect the EC paper itself.
DigiLocker-based registration: Indian nationals had to register through DigiLocker with facial registration. Do not delete the DigiLocker account used for applying, because further communication goes only to that account.

GATE EC Eligibility
Educational qualification
Candidates in the third or higher year of an undergraduate degree, or who have completed a government-approved degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities, can appear. For EC aspirants, this usually means B.E. or B.Tech students in the third year or later, and graduates. M.Sc. students in the first year or later, and candidates who already hold a higher degree, are also eligible.
Age limit
There is no age limit to appear for GATE 2027. Institutes and PSUs may set their own age limits for admission or recruitment, so check each advertisement separately.
Other conditions
No international centres: GATE 2027 has no exam centres outside India. Candidates write the exam at centres in more than 300 Indian cities.
Degrees from abroad: Candidates with a foreign qualifying degree must be in the third year or higher, or have completed a Bachelor's degree of at least three years in a relevant field.
For the degree-wise table and special cases, see the GATE EC eligibility criteria page.
Application Fee and Registration
The fee is charged per paper in Indian Rupees. Bank service or processing charges are extra.
Category | Regular period (one paper) | Extended period and special window (one paper) |
|---|---|---|
Female, SC, ST and PwD candidates | Rs. 1,000 | Rs. 1,500 |
All other candidates, including foreign nationals | Rs. 2,000 | Rs. 2,500 |
Candidates choosing two papers pay double the single-paper fee. The fee is non-refundable except in cases of duplicate transactions with valid proof.
Since registration is closed, the remaining steps for applicants are:
Fix defects: If you received a scrutiny defect email, correct it within the rectification window.
Watch for the correction window: A paid data correction window is scheduled, with dates to be announced.
Check your exam city: City allotment is due on 4 January 2027.
Download the admit card: Use the GOAPS portal once the admit card date is announced.
GATE EC Exam Pattern
The EC paper is a 3-hour computer-based test with 65 questions worth 100 marks: 10 General Aptitude questions and 55 questions from Engineering Mathematics and the EC subjects. Each question carries 1 or 2 marks.
Section | Marks |
|---|---|
General Aptitude (GA) | 15 |
Engineering Mathematics | 13 |
Electronics and Communication subject questions | 72 |
Total | 100 |
Wrong MCQ answers lose one-third of the marks for a 1-mark question and two-thirds for a 2-mark question. MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking, and no question type gives partial marks. Only the on-screen virtual calculator may be used.
What this means for you
Core subjects decide the score: 72 of the 100 marks come from the eight EC subject areas, so technical depth matters most.
Steady scoring areas: General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics together carry 28 marks and follow a more predictable question style, so they reward regular practice.
Guess on MCQs with care: A wrong 2-mark MCQ costs about 0.67 marks, while MSQ and NAT guesses carry no penalty.
The GATE EC exam pattern and marking scheme page covers the question types, timing strategy and score calculation in detail.
GATE EC Syllabus Summary
The official GATE 2027 EC syllabus has eight sections. IIT Madras does not publish section-wise weightage, so treat any weightage figure you see elsewhere as an estimate based on past papers.
Section | Important topics |
|---|---|
Engineering Mathematics | Linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, vector analysis, complex analysis, probability and statistics |
Networks, Signals and Systems | Network theorems, transient analysis, two-port networks, LTI systems, Fourier and Laplace, DTFT, DFT, z-transform, filter design |
Electronic Devices | Energy bands, carrier transport, P-N junction, BJT, MOS capacitor, MOSFET, optoelectronic devices |
Analog Circuits | Diode circuits, BJT and MOSFET amplifiers, current mirrors, differential amplifiers, op-amp circuits, oscillators |
Digital Circuits | Number systems, combinational and sequential circuits, data converters, semiconductor memories, computer organisation |
Control Systems | Transfer functions, signal flow graphs, stability criteria, Bode and root locus, PID, state-variable models |
Communications | Random processes, AM and FM, information theory, digital modulation, detection, error correction |
Electromagnetics | Maxwell's equations, plane waves, transmission lines, Smith chart, waveguides, optical fibres, antennas |
General Aptitude covers verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial aptitude. The full topic-wise list is on the GATE EC syllabus 2027 page.
Two-Paper Combinations with EC
Candidates may take one or two GATE papers from the allowed combinations. As per the tentative list in the GATE 2027 information brochure, EC can be paired with Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Electrical Engineering (EE), Instrumentation Engineering (IN), Physics (PH) and Robotics and Automation (RA).
A second paper only makes sense if it opens a programme or PSU route you actually want. EE and IN overlap heavily with EC in networks, signals, control and analog electronics, so they need the least extra preparation.
Qualifying Marks and GATE Score
The GATE 2027 information brochure sets the General category qualifying mark as the higher of 25 and the mean plus one standard deviation of all candidates' marks, capped at 40. OBC-NCL and EWS qualifying marks are 90 percent of the General figure, and SC, ST and PwD qualifying marks are two-thirds of it.
Your raw marks are then converted into a GATE score out of 1,000. A candidate at the General qualifying mark gets a score of 350, and the mean of the top 0.1 percent of candidates (or the top 10, whichever is larger) maps to 900. Where a paper runs in more than one session, marks are normalised before the score is calculated.
What a GATE EC Score Can Be Used For
Postgraduate admissions: M.E., M.Tech, MS and direct PhD programmes in relevant branches at institutes supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies, including the IITs, IISc and NITs.
Scholarships: The official site lists Rs. 12,400 per month for M.Tech students (generally for 22 months) and Rs. 37,000 per month for PhD scholars in the first two years, rising to Rs. 42,000 per month from the third to fifth year.
PSU recruitment: Many PSUs use GATE scores in recruitment. The official list, which is not exhaustive, includes names such as BHEL, BSNL, ECIL, HAL, IOCL, NPCIL, NTPC, ONGC, POWERGRID and SAIL. Each PSU announces its own posts, eligible papers and selection process.
Qualifying GATE does not by itself guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job. Each institute and PSU applies its own criteria, and a competitive score, not a bare qualifying mark, is what usually matters.
How to Prepare for GATE EC 2027
Build the core first
Start with Networks, Signals and Systems, Analog Circuits and Digital Circuits. These subjects feed into Control Systems and Communications, so a strong base saves time later. Keep Engineering Mathematics running in parallel for 45 to 60 minutes a day, because it supports almost every subject.
Cover the full syllabus with topic tests
After finishing each subject, take short topic-wise tests and keep an error log of every mistake. Electronic Devices and Electromagnetics are often left for the end; give them fixed weekly slots instead, since their concept-heavy questions reward steady practice.
Practise in exam conditions
In the last eight to ten weeks, move to full-length mocks in the official interface with the virtual calculator. Solve previous year GATE EC papers, which the official site provides with answer keys, to understand the real difficulty level.
GATE EC Cut-off Reference
The qualifying marks for EC in recent cycles are shown below, out of 100 marks. The 2026 and 2024 figures are from the official cut-off pages of the organising institutes; the 2025 figures are as reported in results coverage, because the official 2025 page could not be checked.
Year (organising institute) | General | OBC-NCL / EWS | SC / ST / PwD |
|---|---|---|---|
2026 (IIT Guwahati) | 26.4 | 23.7 | 17.5 |
2025 (IIT Roorkee), as reported | 25 | 22.5 | 16.6 |
2024 (IISc Bangalore) | 25 | 22.5 | 16.6 |
These are qualifying marks only. Admission and PSU cut-offs are set separately and are usually much higher. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty and the number of candidates, so treat these figures as a benchmark and aim for a clear margin above them. See the GATE EC cut-off page for the full breakdown.
