Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering EE

GATE EE is a recruitment exam conducted by Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, relevant to engineering graduates targeting technical government and PSU roles.

GATE EE Study Material

GATE EE is the Electrical Engineering paper of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, a national computer-based test conducted jointly by IISc and the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board (GATE), Ministry of Education. For the 2027 cycle, IIT Madras is the organising institute. A valid GATE EE score is used for M.Tech and direct PhD admission in electrical and allied branches, for postgraduate scholarships, and by several public sector undertakings for recruitment.

This page brings the GATE EE 2027 essentials together: the official schedule, who can apply, fees, the paper pattern, the ten syllabus sections, previous qualifying marks and a practical preparation plan. Registration for GATE 2027 has closed, so the next steps for most candidates are the application rectification window, the exam city notification and the admit card. Every figure below is taken from the official GATE 2027 website and information brochure, or from the official result pages of earlier cycles.

GATE EE Eligibility

Educational qualification

You can appear for GATE 2027 if you are in the 3rd or a higher year of an undergraduate degree, or if you have completed a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities. For most GATE EE candidates this means a B.E. or B.Tech in Electrical, Electrical and Electronics or a related branch, either completed or in the 3rd or 4th year.

Age limit

There is no age limit for GATE 2027, so working professionals and earlier graduates can also apply.

Other conditions

  • Professional society members: certifications from bodies such as IE (India) or IETE count only where MoE, AICTE, UGC or UPSC has approved them as equivalent to a B.E. or B.Tech.

  • Foreign qualifications: candidates in the 3rd year or higher, or holding a bachelor's degree of at least three years in a listed stream, can apply.

  • Exam centres: there are no international centres for GATE 2027, so all candidates, including foreign nationals, must take the test at a centre in India.

The GATE EE eligibility guide covers the full degree-wise table and edge cases.

Application Fee and Registration

Category

Regular period (per paper)

Extended period and special window (per paper)

Female, SC, ST and PwD candidates

Rs. 1,000

Rs. 1,500

All other candidates, including foreign nationals

Rs. 2,000

Rs. 2,500

The fee for two papers is twice the single-paper fee, and bank charges are extra. The PwD concession applies only to candidates with a benchmark disability of 40% or more.

How the application worked this cycle

  1. Register on the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) through a DigiLocker account. A verified DigiLocker account is recommended.

  2. Give live facial details during registration, as required for 2027.

  3. Fill in personal, academic and exam city details, and choose EE as the primary paper.

  4. Upload photograph, signature, photo ID and any category or PwD certificate.

  5. Pay the fee online and keep the DigiLocker account active, since GATE sends all later communication through it.

Registration closed on 16 October 2026. If GATE has flagged a defect in your application, fix it in the rectification window, which closes on 31 October 2026.

Two-paper option for EE candidates

A candidate with EE as the primary paper may add one secondary paper from DA, EC, IN, PH or RA. The new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper was introduced in GATE 2027.

Questions carry 1 or 2 marks. A wrong MCQ costs one-third of its marks, so a third of a mark on a 1-mark MCQ and two-thirds on a 2-mark MCQ. MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking, and no question gives partial credit. Calculations are done only on the on-screen virtual calculator.

What this means for you

  • Aptitude is worth it: General Aptitude gives 15 marks for 10 questions, a strong return for modest preparation.

  • Guess with care on MCQs only: MSQ and NAT answers cost nothing when wrong, so attempt every one you have worked through.

  • Practise with the virtual calculator: long power systems and machines calculations take longer on it than on a physical calculator.

GATE EE Syllabus Summary

The official GATE 2027 EE syllabus has ten sections. GATE does not publish a fixed marks split between the electrical subjects, so plan by syllabus coverage and previous papers rather than by any single weightage table.

GATE Score, Qualifying Marks and Validity

GATE converts your marks into a GATE score that reflects your performance relative to everyone who took the EE paper. On that scale, the general qualifying mark maps to a score of 350 and the average of the top performers maps to 900. The qualifying mark for the general category is the higher of 25 and the paper's mean plus standard deviation, capped at 40. OBC-NCL and EWS candidates need nine-tenths of that figure, and SC, ST and PwD candidates two-thirds of it.

A GATE 2027 score stays valid for three years from the result date. Scorecards can be downloaded free for a period still to be announced, then for Rs. 500 per paper until 31 December 2027. No hard copies are issued.

These are official qualifying marks out of 100 from each year's organising institute. Qualifying is only the first hurdle: M.Tech admissions and PSU shortlists usually need marks well above these figures. Treat them as a benchmark and aim for a clear margin above them. The GATE EE cut-off page has registration and attendance figures for each year.

What a GATE EE Score Is Used For

  • M.Tech and direct PhD admission: in electrical, power, control, power electronics and allied programmes at IITs, NITs, IISc and other institutes.

  • Postgraduate scholarships: MoE guidelines give at least 70% weightage to GATE performance where institutes add a test or interview.

  • PSU recruitment: the GATE 2027 brochure lists PSUs that have used GATE scores in recent years, including several from the power sector such as BHEL, NTPC, POWERGRID, GRID India, NPCIL, NEEPCO and DVC.

PSUs publish their own notifications with their own eligibility, branch and score rules, and not every PSU recruits through GATE every year. Check each employer's notice before relying on a GATE EE score for a job.

How to Prepare for GATE EE

Build the core first

Start with Electric Circuits, Signals and Systems and Engineering Mathematics, because Control Systems, Power Systems and Power Electronics build on them. Then move to Electrical Machines and Power Systems, which are calculation-heavy and reward steady practice.

Use previous papers early

The official GATE website offers previous question papers with answer keys. Solving EE papers subject by subject shows how deep each topic goes and which question types repeat.

Practise in the real format

Once a subject is complete, test it under time with MCQ, MSQ and NAT questions together. For timed practice in the current pattern
