GATE EE Eligibility 2027: Qualification and Age Rules

GATE EE eligibility for 2027 is set by the GATE 2027 information brochure from IIT Madras, the organising institute. The rules are common to all 30 GATE papers: you qualify through your degree and year of study, not through your branch, age or marks. Anyone eligible for GATE 2027 may choose Electrical Engineering as their paper, although the EE syllabus is pitched at a B.E. or B.Tech Electrical level.

This page sets out who can apply for the GATE 2027 Electrical Engineering paper, the degree-wise eligibility table, the rules for professional society members and foreign degrees, and the documents you need. Registration for GATE 2027 closed on 16 October 2026, so use this page to confirm your status for scrutiny and admission, or to plan for the next cycle.

A candidate currently in the 3rd or a higher year of any undergraduate degree, or who has already completed a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities, is eligible for GATE 2027. For the EE paper, that typically means:

  • B.E. or B.Tech students: in the 3rd or 4th year of Electrical, Electrical and Electronics, or an allied branch.

  • Graduates: anyone who has completed a B.E. or B.Tech, including working engineers.

  • Higher degree holders: if you are pursuing or hold a degree higher than those listed, you are also eligible.

The brochure does not set a minimum percentage or CGPA for appearing in GATE. Admitting institutes and employers may set their own.

Professional Society and Foreign Degrees

Professional society members

The brochure lists bodies such as The Institution of Engineers (India), The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers and The Institution of Civil Engineers. Their certifications count only if MoE, AICTE, UGC or UPSC has approved them as equivalent to a B.E., B.Tech, B.Arch or B.Planning. Candidates taking these professional exams must have completed Section A or its equivalent. Enrolments under the 2011 MHRD order stand recognised as clarified by an AICTE circular of November 2020.

Degrees from outside India

Candidates studying or graduated abroad must be in the 3rd or higher year of, or have completed, a bachelor's degree of at least three years in Engineering, Technology, Science, Commerce, Arts, Architecture or Humanities.

Nationality and Exam Centres

  • Foreign nationals: may apply and pay the same fee as other general candidates.

  • No international centres: GATE 2027 has no centres outside India, so every candidate must travel to a centre in India.

Eligibility for Admission and Jobs

Being eligible to sit GATE is not the same as being eligible for an M.Tech seat or a PSU post. Institutes set their own branch, degree and marks requirements for admission, and for admission with MoE scholarship the brochure cites MoE guidelines giving at least 70% weightage to GATE performance where an institute adds a test or interview. PSUs that recruit through GATE publish separate notifications with their own branch, percentage and age rules. Check those before you count on a GATE EE score for a particular route.
