Eligibility for GATE Mathematics
GATE eligibility depends on your year of study, not on a subject or a percentage. A candidate in the third or higher year of any undergraduate degree, or one who has completed a government-approved degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities, can appear.
Educational qualification
B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. or BCA (3 years): Currently in the third year or already completed.
B.E., B.Tech. or B.Sc. (Research) / B.S.: Currently in the third year or higher, or already completed.
M.Sc., M.A., MCA or equivalent: Currently in the first year or higher, or already completed.
Integrated M.Sc. or 5-year B.S.-M.S.: Currently in the third year or higher, or already completed.
Degree from outside India: Currently in the third or higher year, or a completed bachelor's degree of at least three years.
Age limit
There is no age limit for GATE 2027. Working professionals and candidates who graduated years ago can apply as long as they meet the qualification rule.
Other conditions
Exam centres: GATE 2027 is held in more than 300 cities in India and has no international centres, so foreign nationals must travel to India.
Two papers: You may write one or two papers. With MA as the first paper, the allowed second papers are CS, DA, PH and ST.
The full rules, including integrated and professional degrees, are on the GATE Mathematics eligibility page.
Application Fee and Next Steps After Applying
Registration for GATE 2027 is over, but the fee structure is useful for reference and for planning the next cycle. Fees are per paper and do not include bank charges.
Category | Regular period | Extended period and special window |
|---|---|---|
Female, SC, ST and PwD candidates | Rs. 1,000 | Rs. 1,500 |
All other candidates, including foreign nationals | Rs. 2,000 | Rs. 2,500 |
For two papers the fee is twice that of one paper. The PwD concession applies to benchmark disability of 40% or more, and the fee is not refundable except when a two-paper combination is withdrawn by GATE.
What to do now if you have applied
Check for scrutiny defects: Log in to GOAPS and fix any flagged defect before 31 October 2026.
Keep DigiLocker active: GATE has asked candidates not to delete their DigiLocker accounts after applying.
Watch for your exam city: City allotment is due on 4 January 2027.
Download the admit card: No printed copy is posted. Carry it with the same original photo ID you entered in the form.
GATE Mathematics Exam Pattern
Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
General Aptitude | 10 | 15 |
Mathematics | 55 | 85 |
Total | 65 | 100 |
Duration: 3 hours, with compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour for eligible PwD candidates.
Question types: Multiple Choice (one correct option out of four), Multiple Select (one or more correct options) and Numerical Answer Type (answer keyed in on a virtual keypad).
Negative marking: One-third of a mark is deducted for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and two-thirds of a mark for a wrong 2-mark MCQ. MSQ and NAT questions carry no negative marking, and there is no partial marking.
Calculator: Only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator is allowed.
What this means for you
Two-mark questions decide your score: In the 2026 MA paper, 25 mathematics questions carried 1 mark and 30 carried 2 marks, so 60 of the 85 subject marks came from 2-mark questions. The brochure gives only section totals, so treat this split as a guide.
MSQ and NAT are penalty-free: Attempt every one you can work through, but remember an MSQ scores only when you mark all the correct options and nothing else.
Blind MCQ guesses do not pay: With four options and the deduction above, a random guess averages out to zero. Guess only after ruling out at least one option.
General Aptitude is 15 marks: It is the quickest part of the paper to secure with regular practice.
Older pages may still show a 13-mark Engineering Mathematics section for every paper. That applies only to engineering papers; MA has 15 marks of General Aptitude and 85 marks of mathematics. The GATE Mathematics exam pattern page explains the marking and scoring in detail.
GATE Mathematics Syllabus Summary

IIT Madras does not publish section-wise weightage. The 2026 MA paper drew questions from almost every section, including topology, algebra, analysis, differential equations, numerical methods and linear programming, so skipping whole sections is risky. See the section-wise GATE Mathematics syllabus for the full topic list and a study order.
Results, Score and Selection Process
GATE is a qualifying and ranking test. It does not select candidates for seats or jobs on its own; institutes and employers use the score in their own processes.
Exam: You write the MA paper in one session on the date and time printed on your admit card.
Answer key: GATE publishes answer keys and allows contests against them for a fee within set dates.
Result and score: Results are due on 19 March 2027. Marks are converted to a GATE score on a scale where the general qualifying mark maps to 350 and the average of the top performers maps to 900.
Scorecard: Qualified candidates download the scorecard from GOAPS. There are no printed copies.
Separate applications: You then apply to institutes or employers, each of which sets its own criteria, tests or interviews.
The brochure is clear that qualifying in GATE does not assure admission, a scholarship or a job.
What a GATE Mathematics Score Opens Up
Postgraduate and doctoral study: GATE-qualified candidates can seek admission, with possible financial assistance, to master's and direct doctoral programmes in engineering and technology, and to doctoral programmes in relevant branches of science, at institutions supported by the Ministry of Education. Each institute decides which GATE papers it accepts for a programme.
Fellowships: GATE qualification is a minimum requirement for several fellowships awarded by government organisations.
Public sector recruitment: Several PSUs have used GATE scores in recruitment, and some Group A posts in the Cabinet Secretariat are filled through GATE scores. Each employer names the papers it accepts, so check whether MA is listed in the specific notice.
Stipends and pay depend entirely on the institute or employer, so this page does not quote a single figure. Read the admission or recruitment notice that applies to you.
How to Prepare for GATE Mathematics 2027
With the exam in February 2027, you have roughly three and a half months. Split the time into three phases.
Phase 1: now to the end of November
Finish or revise the core sections: Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Algebra and Calculus. After each topic, solve the matching questions from official GATE MA papers, which IIT Madras hosts on the GATE 2027 download page.
Phase 2: December
Cover Topology, Functional Analysis, Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis and Linear Programming. Add 30 minutes of General Aptitude a day and start timed sectional practice.
Phase 3: January to the exam
Move to full-length timed papers in the real pattern, using the on-screen calculator rather than a physical one. Analyse each paper the same day and keep an error log of wrong answers, slow questions and skipped questions you could have solved.
GATE Mathematics Cut-off Reference
These are the official qualifying marks (out of 100) published by the organising institutes:
Year | General | OBC-NCL / EWS | SC / ST / PwD |
|---|---|---|---|
2026 | 34.7 | 31.2 | 23.1 |
2025 | 25 | 22.5 | 16.6 |
2024 | 25 | 22.5 | 16.6 |
Qualifying marks change every year with the spread of scores. Treat them as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them, because institutes set their own admission cut-offs that are usually much higher. The GATE Mathematics cut-off page explains how the qualifying mark is calculated and how to set your target score.
