GATE Mathematics Eligibility 2027: Qualification, Age Limit and Who Can Apply
GATE Mathematics eligibility 2027 is set by the GATE 2027 information brochure from IIT Madras, the organising institute for this cycle. The rules are broad: GATE looks at how far you are into a degree, not at your subject, your percentage or your age. A student in the third year of any undergraduate programme can appear for the MA paper, as can anyone who has already completed a government-approved degree.
Registration for GATE 2027 closed on 16 October 2026, so this page is most useful if you have applied and want to confirm your status, or if you are planning for the next cycle. It covers qualification by degree, the age rule, foreign degrees and nationals, the two-paper option, who is not eligible, the documents GATE asks for, and the difference between GATE eligibility and admission requirements.

Degree or programme | Eligible if |
|---|---|
B.Sc., B.A., B.Com., BCA or equivalent (3 years) | Currently in the third year or already completed |
B.Sc. (Research) or B.S. (4 years after 10+2 or post-diploma) | Currently in the third year or higher, or already completed |
B.E., B.Tech. or B.Pharm. | Currently in the third year or higher, or already completed |

Professional society exams equivalent to B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. | Completed Section A or its equivalent |
If you are pursuing or hold a degree higher than those listed, you are also eligible. Professional society certifications must be approved as equivalent to B.E., B.Tech., B.Arch. or B.Planning by the Ministry of Education, AICTE, UGC or UPSC.
Do you need a mathematics degree for the MA paper?
No. GATE does not tie a paper to your degree subject, so an engineering, physics or statistics student who meets the year rule can write MA. In practice the MA syllabus includes postgraduate-level topics such as measure theory and functional analysis, and admitting institutes may restrict which degrees they accept with an MA score. Check the programme you are aiming for before choosing the paper.
Is there a minimum percentage?
The brochure does not set any minimum marks or percentage for appearing in GATE. Institutes may set their own minimum marks for admission, so keep your degree results in mind when you shortlist programmes.
Eligibility examples
Candidate | Eligible for GATE 2027? |
|---|---|
Third-year B.Sc. Mathematics student | Yes, third year of a three-year degree |
Second-year B.Tech. student | No, must be in the third year or higher |
First-year M.Sc. Mathematics student | Yes, master's students are eligible from the first year |

These examples apply the brochure table. If your programme does not fit a row neatly, check the official table or contact the GATE office before relying on your own reading.
Age Limit
There is no age limit for GATE 2027. Graduates of any year and working professionals can appear, provided they meet the qualification rule. Age limits may still apply to a specific job that uses GATE scores, so read the recruitment notice separately.
Foreign Degrees and Foreign Nationals
Degree from outside India: You must be in the third or higher year, or have completed a bachelor's degree of at least three years, in engineering, technology, science, commerce, arts, architecture or humanities.
No international centres: GATE 2027 is held only in cities in India, so foreign nationals and Indian nationals living abroad must travel to India.
ID for foreign nationals: Only a valid passport, government-issued ID or driving licence is accepted.
Fee: Foreign nationals pay the same fee as other general candidates.
Two-Paper Option with MA
You may appear for one or two papers. With MA as the primary paper, the tentative list of allowed second papers is Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Physics (PH) and Statistics (ST). Two papers cost twice the single-paper fee, and GATE may change the list of combinations, and the brochure allows a fee refund only when a two-paper combination is removed.
Who Is Not Eligible
Early-year undergraduates: Students in the first or second year of a three- or four-year bachelor's degree cannot appear.
Unapproved qualifications: Professional society certifications not recognised as equivalent by the listed authorities do not qualify.
Late applicants: The GATE 2027 portal closed on 16 October 2026, including the special late-fee window. Only defect rectification remains open, until 31 October 2026.
Eligibility Versus Admission Requirements
Meeting GATE eligibility only allows you to write the exam. Each admitting institute sets its own conditions, such as the degree it accepts, minimum marks in the qualifying degree, a written test or interview, and its own GATE score cut-off. The brochure also states that qualifying GATE does not assure admission, a scholarship or a job, so check the admission notice of every programme you plan to apply to.
If you are a B.Sc. student aiming for an M.Sc. at an IIT or IISc, the brochure points to JAM 2027, organised by IIT Kharagpur, as the route for those programmes.
