GATE 2027: Cutoff Guide
The GATE cutoff is the minimum mark you need to receive a valid GATE scorecard. It is fixed separately for every paper and every category, and it is announced with the result. For GATE 2027, IIT Madras is the organising institute, and the result is scheduled for 19 March 2027. This page explains how the qualifying marks are decided, lists the official cutoffs of the last three cycles and shows how the qualifying cutoff differs from the admission cutoff that decides seats and interviews.

How GATE Qualifying Marks Are Decided
The General category qualifying mark of a paper is the mean marks of all candidates who appeared plus one standard deviation, with a floor of 25 and a cap of 40. The other categories are fixed as a share of that number:
OBC-NCL and EWS: Nine-tenths of the General qualifying mark.
SC, ST and PwD: Two-thirds of the General qualifying mark.
For example, when the General mark is 30, the OBC-NCL/EWS mark is 27 and the SC/ST/PwD mark is 20. This is exactly how the GATE 2026 Computer Science cutoff worked out. Because the number depends on how the whole group scored, a harder paper or a weaker candidate pool tends to pull it down, and an easier paper pushes it up. Many papers sit at the floor of 25. In 2026 these included Aerospace, Agricultural, Biomedical, Chemical and Chemistry.
GATE Cutoff 2026: Paper-wise Qualifying Marks
These are the qualifying marks published by IIT Guwahati for popular papers in GATE 2026. Computer Science and IT had the largest group, with 2,11,020 candidates appearing out of 2,59,922 registered.
Paper | General | OBC-NCL / EWS | SC / ST / PwD |
|---|---|---|---|
Computer Science and IT (CS) | 30 | 27 | 20 |
Data Science and AI (DA) | 26.4 | 23.7 | 17.5 |
Electronics and Communication (EC) | 26.4 | 23.7 | 17.5 |
Electrical (EE) | 27.7 | 24.9 | 18.4 |
Mechanical (ME) | 25.2 | 22.6 | 16.7 |
Civil (CE) | 28.7 | 25.8 | 19.1 |
Chemical (CH) | 25 | 22.5 | 16.6 |
Instrumentation (IN) | 39.8 | 35.8 | 26.5 |
Life Sciences (XL) | 36.3 | 32.6 | 24.1 |
Architecture and Planning (AR) | 40 | 36 | 26.6 |
Mathematics (MA) | 34.7 | 31.2 | 23.1 |
GATE Cutoff Trend: 2024 to 2026
General category qualifying marks for five core papers over the last three cycles:
Paper | 2024 (IISc) | 2025 (IIT Roorkee) | 2026 (IIT Guwahati) |
|---|---|---|---|
CS | 27.6 | 29.2 | 30 |
EC | 25 | 25 | 26.4 |
EE | 25.7 | 25 | 27.7 |
ME | 28.6 | 35.8 | 25.2 |
CE | 28.3 | 29.2 | 28.7 |
Not a straight line: Mechanical went from 28.6 in 2024 to 35.8 in 2025 and then dropped to 25.2 in 2026.
Core papers rose in 2026: CS, EC and EE all had higher General cutoffs in 2026 than in 2025.
Civil stayed close: It moved only between 28.3 and 29.2 across the three years.
Treat these numbers as a reference range, not a prediction. The 2027 cutoff will depend on the 2027 papers and on who appears.
Qualifying Cutoff vs Admission Cutoff
Feature | Qualifying cutoff | Admission cutoff |
|---|---|---|
Who decides | GATE organising institute (IIT Madras for 2027) | Each IIT, NIT, IISc or employer, programme by programme |
Unit | Marks out of 100 | Usually GATE score out of 1000 |
Purpose | Gives you a valid scorecard | Shortlists candidates for admission, interview or recruitment |
Level | 25 to 40 for General, by formula | Generally higher, and varies by institute, programme, category and round |
Announced | With the result | Separately, in the institute's or employer's notice |
Clearing the qualifying cutoff does not guarantee a seat, an assistantship or a job. Check the published cutoffs of the institutes you are targeting and treat those as your real target score.
GATE Marks, Score and Rank
Your raw marks are converted into a GATE score out of 1000. Papers held in several sessions are normalised first. In the official score formula, the General qualifying mark of the paper corresponds to a score of 350, so the same raw mark can carry different scores in different papers. Institutes and employers usually shortlist on score, not on raw marks.
How to Aim Above the Cutoff
Know your paper's range: Look at the General cutoff of your paper for the last three years and aim for a clear margin above the highest of them.
Bank the common marks: General Aptitude is 15 marks in every paper, and Engineering Mathematics adds 13 in most engineering papers.
Protect your marks: Negative marking applies only to MCQs, so skip a question you cannot narrow down.
Practise in the exam format: Attempt GATE 2027 mock tests on Testkart, compare your marks with your paper's cutoff and use GATE previous year papers to judge real difficulty.
Check the Official Cutoff
The qualifying marks for GATE 2027 will appear on the official GATE 2027 website with the result. Past cutoffs are available on the GATE 2026 cut-off page and the GATE 2024 cut-off page.
