Intelligence Bureau Security Assistant Motor Transport

IB Security Assistant Motor Transport is a recruitment exam conducted by Intelligence Bureau for assistant-cadre recruitment, relevant to aspirants targeting central government Group B and Group C posts.

The IB Security Assistant Motor Transport exam is how the Intelligence Bureau, under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), recruits drivers for its offices across India. The post is called Security Assistant (Motor Transport), or SA/MT for short. It is a Group C, non-gazetted job that needs only a Class 10 pass, a valid light motor vehicle licence and one year of driving experience, which makes it one of the few central intelligence jobs open to matriculates.

This page covers the full 2025-26 cycle, from the notification for 455 posts to the final result, along with eligibility, fees, the exam pattern, the syllabus, salary and a practical preparation plan. The 2026 notification has not been released yet, so the figures below come from the last cycle and are the best guide to what the next one will look like.

Latest Update: Where the Recruitment Stands

The 2025 cycle is complete. MHA released the notification in September 2025, held the Tier I exam on 30 October 2025 and declared the Tier I result on 27 January 2026. Tier II, the driving and motor mechanism test, followed in March 2026, and the final result for 455 posts was declared on 4 May 2026.

As of October 2026, no notification for a 2026 cycle has been published. IB does not run this exam on a fixed annual calendar, so the next notice could come at any time. Keep an eye on the vacancies section of the MHA website, where the notification, admit cards and results are posted.

IB Security Assistant Motor Transport Vacancy

The 2025 notification announced 455 posts, spread across 37 locations, from Delhi/IB Headquarters to SIB offices in every state. Delhi/IB Headquarters had the largest share at 127 posts, while several smaller SIBs had fewer than five.

Some pages swap the ST and EWS figures. The SIB-wise table in the notification adds up to 49 for ST and 46 for EWS, as shown above. Because you apply against one SIB, the number that matters to you is the vacancy count for your own state's SIB, so check that table carefully when the next notification comes out.

Application Fee and How to Apply

Category

Fee (2025 cycle)

General, OBC and EWS (male)

Rs. 650 (Rs. 100 exam fee plus Rs. 550 processing charges)

SC, ST, women and other exempted categories

Rs. 550 (processing charges only)

The fee was payable online through cards, net banking or UPI, or offline through an SBI challan. It is not refundable.

  1. Register: Open the application link from the MHA website and register with your email ID and mobile number.

  2. Choose your SIB: Select one SIB, which decides your domicile requirement and the vacancy pool you compete in.

  3. Choose exam cities: Pick your preferred Tier I exam cities. These cannot be changed later.

  4. Fill in details: Enter personal, educational, licence and driving experience details exactly as on your documents.

  5. Upload documents: Upload a recent photograph and signature in the size and format the notification asks for.

  6. Pay and submit: Pay the fee, submit the form and keep a printout of the confirmation page.

Most rejections come from a licence that was not valid on the closing date, an experience period shorter than one year, or a domicile certificate from a state other than the chosen SIB's. Check all three before you pay.

Each wrong answer costs one-fourth of a mark. Candidates who clear the Tier I qualifying marks are shortlisted for Tier II in order of merit, roughly ten times the number of vacancies.

Tier II: Motor Mechanism and Driving Test cum Interview

Tier II carries 50 marks and you need at least 20 to qualify. It tests whether you can actually drive the vehicle as instructed, find and fix minor defects, and explain basic upkeep and maintenance. An interview is part of the same stage.

What This Means for You

  • Tier I counts twice: It is a screening test and also part of the final merit, so every extra mark helps until the end.

  • Driving rules are a scoring section: Traffic signs and road rules are factual and limited in scope, so 20 marks here are within reach for anyone who drives regularly and revises the rules.

  • Guess with care: Four wrong guesses wipe out one correct answer. Attempt a doubtful question only when you can eliminate at least two options.

  • Do not treat Tier II as a formality: With 50 marks added to your Tier I score, a strong driving test can move you up the final list.

Older pages may still describe Tier II as a translation or local-language paper. That is the pattern of the Security Assistant (Executive) exam, not SA/MT, so follow the official notification. The IB SA MT exam pattern page explains marking and time use in more detail.

  3. Final merit: Prepared on the combined Tier I and Tier II marks (out of 150) for candidates who qualify in Tier II, and drawn up against the vacancies in each SIB.

Cash compensation in lieu of holidays worked, up to 30 days a year

Other allowances

The take-home amount depends on your posting city, the current DA rate and deductions, so it differs from one SIB to another. Any in-hand figure you see quoted online is an estimate, not an official number.

On the job, an SA/MT drives and looks after IB's official vehicles. The work includes transporting officers, keeping the vehicle roadworthy, handling minor repairs and following the security discipline of an intelligence organisation. Hours can be irregular, and confidentiality is a basic expectation of the role.

Qualifying Marks and Cut-Off

The notification sets minimum qualifying marks for Tier I. Crossing them only makes you eligible; the actual shortlist depends on merit within your SIB and category.

Because only about ten candidates per vacancy reach Tier II, the real Tier I cut-off in a competitive SIB is usually well above these minimums. Cut-offs change with paper difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants, so aim for a clear margin above the minimum rather than a bare pass.

How to Prepare for IB SA MT

Tier I Preparation

  • Start with driving rules: Learn every mandatory, cautionary and informatory sign, road markings and the basic rules of the road. This section rewards revision more than any other.

  • Build Class 10 maths: Quantitative aptitude stays at the matric level. Practise percentages, ratios, averages and speed-distance until you can solve them in under a minute.

  • Read news daily: Spend 20 to 30 minutes on national news and keep short monthly notes for General Awareness.

  • Practise reasoning sets: Series, coding-decoding and directions come up often and can be solved quickly with practice.

  • Work on English basics: Focus on common vocabulary, error spotting and short passages.

Tier II Preparation

Keep driving regularly and practise in the kind of vehicle you are likely to be tested on. Learn the main parts of the engine, brakes, clutch, cooling and electrical systems, and practise simple tasks such as changing a wheel, checking fluid levels and spotting the cause of overheating or a weak battery. For the interview, be ready to talk about your driving experience and how you handle a breakdown on the road.

Mock Tests and Practice

MHA does not publish an official mock test for this exam, so use the official notification and past cycle details on the MHA website to understand the format. For timed practice in the five-section pattern.

Start with sectional tests in the first few weeks, then move to full-length one-hour mocks at least twice a week in the final month. After each mock, list the questions you got wrong, the ones that took too long and the ones you skipped but could have solved. Pair your mocks with IB Security Assistant previous year papers to get a feel for the real difficulty level, and keep revising your error log until the exam.
