PSU & Central Institutions

India Post

India Post is a recruitment exam, relevant to candidates preparing for recruitment at public sector undertakings and central institutions.

India Post recruitment 2026 is not a single exam. The Department of Posts fills its frontline jobs through different routes: merit-based online engagement for Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), and departmental or limited competitive exams for Postman, Mail Guard, Multi Tasking Staff (MTS), Postal Assistant (PA) and Sorting Assistant (SA). Knowing which route leads to which post is the first step of any plan.

This page is the parent guide for all of them. It explains what is common, where the routes differ and which sibling page to open for post-specific detail. Dates, vacancies and rules below come from Department of Posts and circle notifications, and anything tentative is labelled. Always confirm on indiapost.gov.in before you act.

Routes: Exam or Merit?

The route decides everything else: eligibility, selection, preparation and what a "cut-off" means. The table below gives the high-level picture. For post-specific detail, use the sibling pages linked after it.

Important: in the 2026 examination calendar issued by the Department of Posts, the only recruitment-type exams for Postman, Mail Guard, MTS, PA and SA are limited to Gramin Dak Sevaks. The rest are promotion exams for serving staff. The department's syllabus framework does provide for an open-market direct recruitment exam, but none appears in the 2026 calendar. Do not rely on older pages that show an open exam for these posts.

Note on dates: as of late October 2026, the dates in the Postal Assistant and Sorting Assistant, Postman, Mail Guard and MTS rows above (May to July 2026) have already passed. Read them as the last reported cycle, not as upcoming dates. For the GDS Schedule-II row, document verification is reported to run till 27 October 2026. No new notice for these exams is confirmed on this page, so check indiapost.gov.in and your circle's website for the next notice.

Tentative dates come from circle notifications and news reports, and can change. Track the official recruitment pages on indiapost.gov.in, the GDS online engagement portal and your own circle's website.

Vacancies

Vacancies are published circle by circle and division by division, and they are provisional. For GDS, news reports put Schedule-I at about 28,740 posts and Schedule-II at about 23,757 posts across circles. These are indicative figures from secondary reports, so check the circle-wise notification. For the departmental exams, some circle notifications give only provisional numbers, so there is no reliable single national total to quote.

Eligibility in Brief

Eligibility is route-specific. This summary shows what is common and what changes. The full rules, with age relaxation and service conditions, are on the India Post eligibility page.

  • GDS: Class 10 pass with Mathematics and English, study of the local language of the circle up to Class 10, and age 18 to 40 years with government relaxations.

  • Postman and Mail Guard (GDS route): Class 10 pass, local-language knowledge, basic computer knowledge and the required years of regular GDS service as on 1 January 2026.

  • MTS (GDS route): no minimum educational qualification and no upper age limit in the 2026 circle notifications seen, with the required years of regular GDS service.

  • Postman and Mail Guard (LDCE): serving MTS officials with the stated years of regular service as on 1 January 2026.

  • PA and SA (LDCE): serving officials in Level 1 to Level 3 posts with the stated years of regular service, with a second category considered only if the first falls short.

The regular-service requirement for the GDS route is not the same in every notification. Some circles stated five years for Postman and Mail Guard, while a Tamil Nadu corrigendum dated 15 June 2026 revised it to four years. Read your own circle's notice.

Selection Process and Exam Pattern in Brief

GDS: merit, not an exam

GDS selection is based on Class 10 marks. Marks are calculated to four decimal places, a system-generated merit list is published circle-wise, and shortlisted candidates go through document verification. There is no written exam, no interview, and therefore no syllabus or exam pattern to prepare.

Postman, Mail Guard and MTS: written papers

In the 2026 circle notifications, Postman and Mail Guard candidates sit Papers I and II together, Paper III (local language), and then a Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) later. The DEST is a 15-minute computer test in English, and the number called is three times the Postman and Mail Guard vacancies. MTS candidates sit Paper I only. Candidates must meet the minimum marks fixed in the notification. The full detail is on the India Post exam pattern page.

Postal Assistant and Sorting Assistant

In the Karnataka circle's 2026 LDCE notification, selection was on Paper I (objective, 100 marks, 120 minutes), with a qualifying DEST. Merit was based on Paper I alone. The local-language test for these posts was removed from 29 May 2024.

Older pages may still show a local-language paper for PA and SA or an open exam for all posts, so follow the official notification.

Syllabus in Brief

The Department of Posts publishes the exam papers and areas in the annexures to each notification, not as a separate topic-wise syllabus for the whole recruitment. The broad areas for the written exams are postal rules and manuals, general awareness, basic arithmetic and reasoning, plus local-language and data-entry skills where the notification includes them. Treat any longer topic list as a working checklist, not an official one. The India Post syllabus page breaks this down route by route.

Pay and Career Growth

Postman and Mail Guard are Group C posts in Level 3 of the pay matrix, with a pay scale of Rs. 21,700 to Rs. 69,100 in the 2026 circle notification. MTS is a Level 1 post. For GDS, news reports give a monthly allowance (TRCA) of Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 29,380 for Branch Postmasters and Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 24,470 for Assistant Branch Postmasters and Dak Sevaks. These come from secondary reports, so verify them in the GDS notification. In-hand pay varies by city and allowances.

The routes also form a ladder. A GDS can move to MTS, Postman or Mail Guard through the CE, and serving staff can move up to Postal Assistant or Sorting Assistant through the LDCE. That makes early GDS service a real career step, not a dead end.

How to Prepare for India Post Exams

  1. Pick your route first: decide whether you are applying for GDS merit or a departmental exam, since the preparation is completely different.

  2. For GDS: focus on your Class 10 documents, category certificate, local-language proof and the circle's schedule. Your Class 10 marks are already fixed, so accuracy in the application matters most.

  3. For Postman, Mail Guard and MTS: build postal knowledge from the department's manuals, then practise arithmetic, reasoning and general awareness. Keep local-language writing and typing practice ready.

  4. For PA and SA: focus on postal rules, general awareness, arithmetic and reasoning for a single 120-minute objective paper, and practise the data-entry test.

Cut-Off Reference

GDS has no exam cut-off in the usual sense. Each circle's merit list is built on Class 10 percentage, and the last shortlisted candidate's percentage in a circle and category acts as the cut-off. For the departmental exams, the notification sets minimum qualifying marks. Our India Post cut-off page explains both without quoting unverified figures.
