India Post Eligibility 2026: Qualification, Age Limit and Service Rules
India Post eligibility 2026 depends on the route. Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) posts are open to Class 10 pass candidates within the age limit. Postman, Mail Guard and Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) exams in 2026 are limited to serving departmental staff or eligible GDS, and Postal Assistant (PA) and Sorting Assistant (SA) exams are limited to serving staff and then eligible GDS. Service conditions, not just qualification, decide who can apply.

Service Requirements
For the departmental exams, service on the crucial date matters as much as qualification. The crucial date in the 2026 notices is 1 January 2026.
Exam | Service condition as on 1 January 2026 |
|---|---|
MTS (CE for GDS) | Three years of regular GDS service |
Postman and Mail Guard (CE for GDS) | Five years of regular GDS service in the West Bengal and North East notices; a Tamil Nadu corrigendum dated 15 June 2026 revised this to four years |
Postman and Mail Guard (LDCE) | MTS in Level 1 with three years of regular service in the grade, or five years of total regular service including regular GDS service |
PA and SA (LDCE), Karnataka notice | Category A: Level 3 officials with three years in the post or five years combined across Levels 1 to 3; Level 2 and Level 1 officials with five years. Category B is considered only if Category A candidates are insufficient: eight years of total regular service across Levels 1 to 3, with GDS service counted as stated |
The service requirement is not the same in every circle's notification. Always check the corrigenda issued for your circle, because they can change a condition after the first notice.
