International Mathematical Olympiad eligibility has two layers. The IMO sets rules on age, schooling and citizenship for every contestant in the world. India then adds its own conditions at the first stage of its selection programme, and these decide whether you can even begin the journey.

This page explains both layers for the 2026-27 cycle, which leads to the 68th IMO in Budapest in July 2027. It uses the IMO General Regulations and the official HBCSE and IOQM criteria. Read it with the exam pattern page to see how each stage works.

Register for IOQM; fee Rs. 300 (Rs. 180 for KV and JNV students)

Two Layers of Eligibility

You cannot apply to the IMO directly. Participation is by invitation to countries, and each country picks its team through its own national programme. For an Indian student, this means you must be eligible for the Indian programme first and for the IMO second.

  • The Indian layer: Set by HBCSE and the IOQM organisers. It decides who can write IOQM, RMO and INMO, and who is invited to the training camp.

  • The international layer: Set by the IMO General Regulations. It decides who may be named in the six-member team once selected.

IMO Eligibility: International Rules

These rules come from the IMO General Regulations, approved at the IMO in 2025.

Age Limit

A contestant must have been born on or after 1 July in the year that is 20 years before the year of the IMO. For IMO 2027, that means born on or after 1 July 2007. Some older pages describe the rule as being under 20 on the day of the second paper. The current Regulations use the birth-date rule, so check the date of birth rather than the exact age on contest day.

School Education

Contestants must have been normally enrolled in full-time primary or secondary education on or after 1 December in the year before the IMO. For IMO 2027, that date is 1 December 2026. A home-schooled student must not have received a high-school diploma or equivalent and must be working towards one on that date.

Citizenship and Residence

Contestants should normally be citizens of the country they represent. A genuine long-term foreign resident can be in the team if the student has already spent a full academic year being educated in that country and will spend at least two years in full-time education there before leaving secondary school. The foreign education must be for a real family reason, and not to change national IMO status.

Other International Rules

  • One country per year: A student may not attempt the final selection examinations of more than one country in a given IMO year.

  • Team size: Each invited country can send up to six contestants, a leader and a deputy leader.

  • Repeat participation: The Regulations do not set a limit on the number of times a student can take part, provided the age and schooling conditions are met each year.

IOQM 2026 Eligibility for Indian Students

The Indian rules are stricter at the start, because HBCSE must be sure that anyone who reaches the final stage is also eligible for the IMO. These are the criteria published for IOQM 2026.

Age and Class

Students born between 1 August 2007 and 31 July 2014, and studying in Class 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12, are eligible. No student born on or after 1 August 2014 can write the paper. In practice, this covers students from just over 12 years old to just over 19. Students from any recognised board or system, including home-schooled and open-schooled students with the required documents, can take part.

Citizenship

The student must be eligible to hold an Indian passport. Students with OCI cards are provisionally eligible, with limits explained in the OCI section below.

Residence and Indian Schooling

The student must have been residing and studying in India since 30 October 2024 or earlier, or must have been studying in an Indian school system since that date. A student abroad in an Indian school system must travel to India to write IOQM and later stages, and bears the cost of the journey. Such a student is treated as enrolled from the Delhi-NCR region.

Class 12 Board Examination

The student must not have qualified, or be scheduled to appear, in the Class 12 board examination earlier than 30 October 2026. A student who has already passed Class 12 is not eligible, even after a gap year or when planning to reappear for improvement. Forfeiting a board result to meet this rule is not allowed, and a student who does so is disqualified.

University Studies

The student must not have started, or be planning to start, studies at a university or equivalent institution by 1 June 2027.

Direct Entry for INMO Awardees

INMO 2026 awardees can write INMO 2027 directly, without IOQM and RMO, if they still meet the age rule, have not started university, and meet the IMO 2027 and EGMO 2028 eligibility rules.

Fee and Documents

The IOQM fee is Rs. 300, or Rs. 180 for students of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. The organisers state that there is no further fee for RMO, INMO or the training camps. Keep a passport-size photo, a school ID or latest fee receipt or last year's report card, and an Aadhaar card, passport or birth certificate ready when registering.

Registration for IOQM 2026 is closed, and the paper was held on 6 September 2026. The notice for the next cycle is awaited, so check the official IOQM and HBCSE pages.

Category A, Category B and Qualifying Between Stages

HBCSE splits students into two categories. Category A covers Classes 8 to 11, and Category B covers Class 12. A region is decided by the postal address of your school, with Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas treated as separate regions. Wrong information about your region leads to disqualification from all later stages.

Step

Condition

Quota per region

IOQM to RMO

At least 10% of IOQM marks, which is not the only condition

Top 200 in Category A, top 40 in Category B, plus 5 more girls from Category A, with ties at the last place included

RMO to INMO

A non-zero score in RMO, which is not the only condition

Top 30 in Category A, top 6 in Category B, plus 5 more girls from Category A; ties broken by IOQM scores

INMO to awardee

Merit in INMO across the country

Top 48 from Classes 8 to 11, top 12 from Class 12, and up to 5 more girls

Awardee to IMOTC

Invitation to the camp

A team of six is chosen through selection tests

There is no separate girls' quota for Category B. A girl in Class 12 qualifies only through the main Category B quota. Overseas students are not counted when a region's cut-off is worked out. For the marks that decided past cut-offs, see the cut-off page.

OCI Students and Students Abroad

As per orders of the Madras High Court, students with OCI status cannot be selected for the Indian team at the IMO, the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad or the Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad. They are provisionally eligible at all earlier stages, up to the training camp and its selection tests, if they meet the other criteria. HBCSE states that this policy can change without notice if courts or the government issue new orders.

Students abroad who are Indian citizens or OCI holders and study in an Indian school system can take part, but all centres are in India and the student must travel here for each stage.

One Subject Per Year at the Training Camps

In a given year, a student can take part in the training and selection of only one Olympiad subject, whether it is the mathematics camp or one of the five science camps. A student who qualifies in more than one subject must give an order of preference. The student is then invited to the camp ranked highest in that list. This rule matters for students who are strong in both mathematics and science.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Students outside the date-of-birth window: Anyone born before 1 August 2007 or on or after 1 August 2014 cannot write IOQM 2026.

  • Students outside Classes 8 to 12: Students in Class 7 or below, and students in college, are not eligible.

  • Students who have passed Class 12: Having passed the board examination ends eligibility, even without college admission.

  • Students starting university by 1 June 2027: This includes plans to join, not only admission already taken.

  • Students without a link to India: Those who have not lived and studied in India, or studied in an Indian school system, since 30 October 2024 or earlier.

  • Students giving wrong region details: False information is treated seriously and leads to disqualification.

Eligibility in Future Cycles

The conditions are published afresh every year, and the dates move forward. The IOQM 2027 criteria have not been released yet. Do not rely on last year's date-of-birth window for the next cycle, and read the new criteria PDF on the official portals. It is the student's own responsibility to meet the criteria, and a student found ineligible at any later stage can be removed from the programme.

Checklist Before You Register

  1. Check your date of birth against the window in the new criteria.

  2. Confirm your class and, for Class 12, that you have not passed the board examination.

  3. Check your residence and schooling dates against the stated cut-off date.

  4. Plan for university dates and make sure they do not start before the stated limit.

  5. Keep documents ready and register only once, either through your school or on your own.

Is This the Eligibility of the School-Level Olympiad?

No. The International Mathematics Olympiad run by the Science Olympiad Foundation for Classes 1 to 12 has its own enrolment through schools and its own rules. This page covers the global contest and the Indian stages that lead to it. For official criteria, use the HBCSE Mathematical Olympiad 2026-27 page, the official IOQM portal and the IMO regulations.
