Indian Space Research Organisation Technician

ISRO Technician is a recruitment exam conducted by Indian Space Research Organisation for the recruitment of Technicians, relevant to engineering graduates targeting technical government and PSU roles.

ISRO Technician is the entry-level skilled post, officially titled Technician 'B', in the Indian Space Research Organisation. There is no single national exam for it. Each ISRO centre, such as ISTRAC in Bengaluru, LPSC in Thiruvananthapuram or IPRC at Mahendragiri, publishes its own advertisement, runs its own written test and then holds a skill test in the notified ITI trade.

This guide covers the 2026 cycle as it stands on 7 October 2026. It brings together vacancies, eligibility, fee, selection process, exam pattern, salary and preparation advice, all checked against the official ISRO notices. Where one centre differs from another, the difference is stated plainly.

ISRO Technician Notification Overview

ISRO recruits Technician 'B' centre by centre. A centre advertises only the trades it needs, so the trade list and vacancy count change from one notice to the next. In 2026, ISTRAC advertised Electronics Mechanic and Carpenter, LPSC advertised Electronic Mechanic and Fitter, and IPRC advertised Turner, Fitter, Welder, Machinist, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, and Electrician.

The posts are described as temporary but likely to continue. Selected candidates can be posted to any ISRO or Department of Space unit in India, and the ISTRAC notice adds that appointees may have to work in round-the-clock shifts. Each notice also states that vacancy numbers are provisional and may change.

ISRO Technician Eligibility Criteria

Educational qualification

You need a pass in SSLC, SSC or Matriculation (Class 10), plus an ITI certificate with NTC or NAC from NCVT in the exact trade advertised. For ISTRAC's Electronics Mechanic post, related ITI trades named in the notice are also accepted: Technician Power Electronic Systems, Mechanic Consumer Electronic Appliances and Mechanic Industrial Electronics. IPRC states that no equivalent courses will be considered.

The qualification must be complete on the cut-off date. Candidates still waiting for final results should not apply.

Age limit

The age limit is 18 to 35 years, counted on the cut-off date of the notice you apply under. Upper-age relaxation is shown below.

Category

Upper age relaxation

SC and ST

5 years, only where the post is reserved for the category

OBC (non-creamy layer)

3 years, only where the post is reserved for the category

EWS

No relaxation

Ex-servicemen, persons with benchmark disabilities, serving government employees, meritorious sportspersons, widows and divorced or judicially separated women who have not remarried

As per Government of India orders

If a post is unreserved, SC, ST and OBC candidates apply on par with unreserved candidates and get no age relaxation.

Other conditions

  • Nationality: Only Indian nationals can apply.

  • Employed candidates: Those in central or state government, public sector or autonomous bodies must apply with their employer's knowledge and show a No Objection Certificate at the skill test.

  • Certificates: EWS candidates need an income and asset certificate in the prescribed format, and OBC candidates need a central-list certificate that mentions the creamy layer clause.

Application Fee and How to Apply

All applicants first pay a processing amount. Part of it is refunded to those who actually appear in the written test.

Women, SC, ST, ex-servicemen and persons with benchmark disabilities get the full amount back, again only if they appear in the test. Payment is online, through net banking, UPI or debit card (IPRC also accepts credit cards).

Steps to apply

  1. Open the Careers page of ISRO and select the advertisement of the centre you are applying to.

  2. Register with a valid email ID and mobile number. All test intimations go to this email, so check spam as well.

  3. Fill in personal, educational and bank details carefully. A submitted application cannot be edited.

  4. Upload your photograph, signature and certificates as the notice specifies. ISTRAC asks for JPG files of 50 to 100 KB; IPRC accepts JPEG files up to 1 MB.

  5. Pay the fee online and save the application form and registration number.

Apply separately, with separate fee, for each post. An unclear photograph, missing certificates or a wrong email ID are common reasons for rejection.

ISRO Technician Selection Process

  1. Online application and screening: ISTRAC screens applicants on academic performance and other details before calling them for the written test.

  2. Written test: 80 multiple-choice questions based on the curriculum of your ITI trade. This is the only stage that decides merit.

  3. Skill test: Candidates are shortlisted in a 1:5 ratio, with at least 10 per post. The test is go or no-go, so its marks are not counted for ranking.

  4. Document verification: Originals of all uploaded documents are checked at the skill test. Missing documents or an NOC can mean you are not allowed to appear.

  5. Final panel: Drawn in order of written test marks from candidates who qualified the skill test. Ties are broken using academic marks of the notified qualification; ISTRAC also gives preference to candidates holding NAC marks.

The paper has no separate sections. Questions come from the full ITI curriculum of your trade, covering both theory and practical knowledge. The mode depends on the centre: ISTRAC used a Computer Based Test in Hindi or English, LPSC holds its tests in Thiruvananthapuram, and IPRC uses an OMR test in Tamil, Hindi and English.

What this means for you

  • Wrong answers cost marks: Each wrong answer removes 0.33 marks, so 60 correct and 12 wrong answers give 56.04, not 60.

  • Qualifying is not selecting: 32 marks only keeps you in the race. The final panel runs on written marks, so a higher score matters.

  • Revise trade practicals too: The skill test is pass or fail, but failing it removes you from the panel however high your written score.

ISRO Technician Syllabus Summary

ISRO describes the syllabus as purely curriculum based, drawn from the academic syllabus of the ITI trade. It does not publish a topic-wise list. The table below is a working checklist built from standard NCVT trade areas, not an official list.

The figure above is the official pay entry and starting emoluments. Take-home pay varies with the place of posting and the allowances you draw, and this guide does not estimate it. Career growth follows ISRO's merit promotion scheme, under which technical staff are reviewed for the next grade after a prescribed period, without waiting for a vacancy.

Admit Card, Result and Cut-Off

ISRO does not mail hall tickets. Admit cards and call letters are sent to your registered email, and ISTRAC also used SMS and an online login. Keep your email active and check the centre's website regularly.

There is no centralised ISRO Technician result. After the written test, each centre shortlists candidates for the skill test and later drafts its panel. ISTRAC also opened a response-sheet and objection window for its CBT. The notices fix only qualifying marks, not category-wise cut-offs, so treat any quoted cut-off on unofficial pages with care.

How to Prepare for ISRO Technician

Because the paper follows your ITI curriculum, preparation is closer to a trade revision than to a general competitive exam.

  • Start with your trade books: Revise theory chapter by chapter from your ITI trade theory and workshop calculation material.

  • Practise measurement and calculation: Many questions need quick arithmetic, unit conversion or reading a drawing.

  • Keep your practicals sharp: Rehearse the standard jobs of your trade, since the skill test follows the written test.

  • Attempt timed papers: Practise 80 questions in 90 minutes and learn when to skip a doubtful question.

New ISRO notices appear through the year, so the best habit is to prepare in advance and apply the day a notice for your trade opens.
