Exam Pattern
Written test
Feature | Details |
|---|---|
Mode | Offline, OMR sheet |
Centres | Tirunelveli and Chennai |
Questions | 80 multiple choice questions |
Duration | 90 minutes |
Marking | +1 for each correct answer, 0.33 deducted for each wrong answer |
Language | Tamil, Hindi and English |
Passing marks | 32 out of 80 for UR and EWS; 24 out of 80 for reserved categories |
Skill test
The skill test is conducted for 100 marks, and you need at least 50 (UR and EWS) or 40 (reserved categories) to qualify. Its marks are not counted in selection. Qualified written test candidates are shortlisted in a 1:5 ratio, with at least 10 candidates per post. The test follows the ITI curriculum.
What this means for you
The written score decides everything: The skill test only qualifies you. If two candidates tie, their academic marks in the notified qualification break the tie.
Guess with care: On a four-option question, a blind guess earns almost nothing on average. Guess only after you remove at least one option.
Passing marks are not the cut-off: 32 and 24 only make you eligible for the skill test. Selection depends on how you rank against others.
Older pages may still show earlier ISRO formats, such as a computer-based test marked out of 180, so follow this notification.
Syllabus Summary
The notification says the written test and skill test are based purely on the curriculum of the prescribed qualification. It does not publish a topic-wise list. The topics below come from the ITI Fitter curriculum and are a working checklist, not an official list.
Subject area | Where tested | Important topics |
|---|---|---|
Trade theory | Written test | Workshop safety and PPE, hand tools, marking and measuring instruments, filing, sawing, chipping, drilling, reaming, tapping and threading |
Workshop calculation and science | Written test | Units, ratio, percentage, area and volume, basic mechanics, heat, material properties |
Engineering drawing | Written test | Reading drawings, dimensions, views, symbols and limits and fits |
Trade practical | Skill test | Marking out, fitting to size, using vernier caliper and micrometer, drilling and tapping, assembly |
Start with trade theory because it forms the base for both the written test and the skill test. Our ISRO Technician B Fitter syllabus page expands each area.
Selection Process
Online application: Eligibility is checked against the details you enter and the documents you upload.
Written test: An 80-question OMR test. You must score the passing marks for your category.
Shortlisting: Qualified candidates are called for the skill test in a 1:5 ratio per post.
Skill test: A qualifying test. You also show the originals of every uploaded document, and a No Objection Certificate if you are employed.
Final panel: Ranked by written test marks. Selected candidates join once found medically fit.
Salary and Career Growth
Post | Pay level | Pay matrix range |
|---|---|---|
Technician 'B' (Fitter) | Level 3 | Rs. 21,700 to Rs. 69,100 |
Employees also receive dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance at the rates in force. House rent allowance and transport allowance are paid only to those who do not use departmental housing or transport. Other benefits include the National Pension System, contributory health scheme cover for the family, a subsidised canteen, leave travel concession and a house building advance.
IPRC does not publish an in-hand figure. It varies with the posting city and your housing and transport choices, so treat any online estimate as unofficial. Postings start at Mahendragiri, but you can be transferred to any ISRO centre or unit in India.
How to Prepare
Study plan for the written test
Begin with trade theory: Revise your ITI Fitter theory books topic by topic and note every tool, instrument and process by name.
Keep calculation sharp: Practise workshop arithmetic and mensuration in short daily sets, since speed matters in 90 minutes.
Read drawings daily: Spend 15 minutes on dimensions, symbols and limits and fits.
Prepare for the skill test early: Revisit marking out, filing to size and measuring with a vernier caliper and micrometer, because only the written test counts for rank.
Use mock tests
An OMR paper with negative marking rewards timing and accuracy. then use the section-wise analysis to decide what to revise. Add previous year papers to see the real difficulty level, and keep an error log of wrong answers and slow questions. In the last two weeks, take full-length 80-question tests in 90 minutes and review each one the same day.
Cut-Off Reference
IPRC has not yet held the 2026 test, so no IPRC cut-off exists. As a benchmark, the table below uses ISRO's official result for Technician-B (Fitter) at U R Rao Satellite Centre (Advt. URSC:ISTRAC:01:2024). It shows the written marks, out of 80, of the last selected candidate in each panel.
Panel | Candidates selected | Last selected (out of 80) |
|---|---|---|
UR | 3 | 69.36 |
OBC | 7 | 66.69 |
EWS | 1 | 67.36 |
SC | 2 | 64.69 |
ST | 1 | 59.71 |
Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants, and a different centre will produce different numbers. Treat these figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them. Our ISRO Technician B Fitter cut off page has the trend and target-setting advice.
