Joint Entrance Examination Advanced

Engineering entrance exam for admission to IITs

JEE Advanced Study Material

JEE Advanced is the entrance exam for undergraduate programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). It is conducted every year by one of the seven zonal IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB), and only the top candidates from the B.E./B.Tech. paper of JEE Main can sit for it. Your JEE Advanced rank decides admission to B.Tech., BS, dual degree and B.Arch. seats at the IITs through JoSAA counselling, and IISc Bengaluru also uses it for B.Tech. admission.

The 2026 cycle, organised by IIT Roorkee, is complete. The JEE Advanced 2027 notification and organising IIT have not been announced yet. This page gives you the verified rules from the 2026 information brochure, an expected 2027 timeline based on it, and a clear view of eligibility, pattern, syllabus, qualifying marks and preparation.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must satisfy all five conditions below. Missing any one of them makes you ineligible, even with a strong JEE Main score. The details here come from the 2026 brochure; check the 2027 brochure for revised dates.

1. Performance in JEE Main

You must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in the B.E./B.Tech. paper of JEE Main. These places are split by category (40.5% OPEN, 27% OBC-NCL, 15% SC, 10% GEN-EWS, 7.5% ST), with 5% of each category set aside for PwD candidates.

CategoryNon-PwDPwDTotal (2026)
OPEN96,1875,0631,01,250
OBC-NCL64,1253,37567,500
SC35,6251,87537,500
GEN-EWS23,7501,25025,000
ST17,81293818,750
Total2,37,49912,5012,50,000

2. Age limit

For 2026, candidates had to be born on or after 1 October 2001. SC, ST and PwD candidates get a five-year relaxation, so they had to be born on or after 1 October 1996. Expect the cut-off date to move forward by one year for 2027.

3. Number of attempts

You can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times, and the two attempts must be in consecutive years. If you skip a year after your first attempt, you lose the second.

4. Appearance in Class XII

You must have appeared in Class XII (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects for the first time in the exam year or the year before it. For 2026, that meant a first appearance in 2025 or 2026.

5. Earlier admission at an IIT

You are not eligible if you have ever accepted an IIT seat through JoSAA, joined an IIT programme, or had your IIT admission cancelled after joining.

Class XII marks for IIT admission

Clearing JEE Advanced alone does not secure an IIT seat. To be admitted, you also need at least 75% aggregate marks in Class XII (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), or a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of your board.

JEE Advanced Application Fee and How to Apply

The fee is paid online during registration. These are the 2026 fees for candidates writing the exam at centres in India.

CategoryFee (2026)
Female candidates (all categories)Rs. 1,600
SC, ST and PwD candidatesRs. 1,600
All other Indian nationalsRs. 3,200
Foreign nationals (SAARC countries)USD 100
Foreign nationals (non-SAARC countries)USD 200

Steps to register

  1. Log in: Open the registration portal on jeeadv.ac.in and sign in with your JEE Main credentials.

  2. Fill in details: Enter personal and academic details and choose your preferred exam cities (the 2026 form asked for 10 choices).

  3. Upload documents: Upload your Class X certificate (or birth certificate), Class XII marksheet and any category or PwD certificate you are claiming.

  4. Pay the fee: Pay online before the fee deadline, which can fall a day or two after registration closes.

  5. Save the confirmation: Download the completed form and keep a copy for counselling.

Category certificates (GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD) must be in the format the brochure prescribes. A wrong or outdated certificate is a common reason for problems at the JoSAA document verification stage.

JEE Advanced Exam Pattern

JEE Advanced has two compulsory papers held on the same day: Paper 1 in the morning (9:00 am to 12:00 noon in 2026) and Paper 2 in the afternoon (2:30 pm to 5:30 pm). Each paper has three sections, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Your rank depends on your combined score from both papers, so missing either paper rules you out.

Unlike most entrance exams, the IITs do not publish the question types or marking scheme in advance. The organising IIT can change the number of questions, question formats and negative marking each year, and the exact scheme appears only in the instructions on exam day.

FeatureWhat recent papers show (2024 to 2026)
Total marks360 (180 per paper)
Marks per subject60 per paper, 120 across both papers
Questions per subject per paperUsually 16 to 18
Question typesSingle correct MCQ, multiple correct MCQ, numerical or integer answer, matching lists, paragraph-based questions
Negative markingUsually on single and multiple correct MCQs and matching questions; numerical questions usually have none
Partial markingUsually given in multiple correct MCQs when you mark only some correct options and no wrong option

What this means for you:

  • Practise every format: Since the scheme is not fixed, train on all question types rather than one year's paper.

  • Read instructions first: Spend the first minutes of each paper reading the marking rules section by section.

  • Guess with care: A wrong multiple correct answer can cost more than a skipped one, while numerical questions without negative marking are worth attempting.

  • Protect every subject: The rank list has a minimum mark in each subject, so a weak subject can disqualify you even with a good total.

See the full JEE Advanced exam pattern and marking scheme for section-wise detail.

JEE Advanced Syllabus Overview

The official syllabus is published in the information brochure. It is based on Class XI and XII Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, but questions test deeper application and multi-concept problem solving than JEE Main.

SubjectMain unitsWhere to start
PhysicsGeneral (units, errors, experiments), Mechanics, Thermal Physics, Electricity and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, Modern PhysicsMechanics and Electricity and Magnetism
ChemistryPhysical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic ChemistryMole concept, chemical bonding and general organic chemistry
MathematicsSets, Relations and Functions, Algebra, Matrices, Probability and Statistics, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry, CalculusFunctions, calculus and coordinate geometry

The JEE Advanced syllabus is not identical to JEE Main. Some topics, especially in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, appear only in the Advanced list. The detailed JEE Advanced syllabus covers every unit, the differences from JEE Main and the Architecture Aptitude Test syllabus.

Qualifying Marks and JEE Advanced Cut-off

To get a rank, you must clear a minimum mark in each subject and a minimum aggregate. The brochure sets default percentages, and the Joint Admission Board can lower them if too few candidates qualify, which is what usually happens.

Rank listMinimum per subject (default)Minimum aggregate (default)
Common Rank List (CRL)10%35%
GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL9%31.5%
SC, ST and PwD5%17.5%
Preparatory course list2.5%8.75%

The actual 2026 cut-offs, as reported after the result, were lower than these defaults:

CategorySubject minimum (out of 120)Aggregate minimum (out of 360), 2026
CRL892
GEN-EWS782
OBC-NCL782
SC446
ST446
PwD446

For comparison, the CRL aggregate cut-off in 2025 was reported at 74 marks. Cut-offs move every year with paper difficulty and the number of candidates. Treat these figures as a benchmark only. Clearing the cut-off gives you a rank, but the rank needed for a popular branch at an older IIT is far higher. Read the JEE Advanced cut-off trends before setting your target.

Selection Process

  1. JEE Main: Qualify among the top 2,50,000 in the B.E./B.Tech. paper.

  2. JEE Advanced: Write both papers and clear the subject-wise and aggregate minimums to appear in a rank list.

  3. Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT): Only for candidates who want B.Arch. at the IITs that offer it (IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee in 2026). AAT is qualifying; it does not change your rank.

  4. JoSAA counselling: Register on josaa.nic.in, fill choices, and take part in seat allocation rounds. Seats are allotted on your category rank, choices and the Class XII criterion.

How to Prepare for JEE Advanced

Most aspirants prepare for JEE Main and Advanced together, then shift to Advanced-level problems in the weeks between the two exams. The approach below works for both a two-year plan and a final-year push.

  • Build concepts from NCERT first: Advanced questions combine two or three ideas. Gaps in basics show up quickly, especially in Physical Chemistry and Calculus.

  • Solve multi-concept problems: Once a chapter is clear, move to problems that mix it with earlier chapters, such as rotation with energy conservation or definite integrals with functions.

  • Solve previous year papers: Papers from the last eight to ten years show the depth expected and the range of question formats. Solve them under time limits, not as reading material.

  • Keep an error log: Note every wrong or slow question with the reason. Revise this log weekly; it becomes your most useful revision tool in the last month.

  • Do not neglect Inorganic Chemistry: It is scoring and largely fact-based, and short daily revision keeps it fresh.

  • Train for two papers in one day: Sit two 3-hour papers with a break in between at least once a week in the final phase so that your focus holds in the afternoon session.

Use full-length mock tests in the real format

Mock tests matter more for JEE Advanced than for most exams because the format changes every year. Regular full-length tests help you adapt to unfamiliar marking schemes, decide when to skip, and keep every subject above the minimum. Analyse each mock the same day: separate conceptual errors, calculation slips and questions you skipped but could have solved.

For timed practice, you can attempt JEE Advanced online tests on Testkart and use the subject-wise analysis to find weak chapters. Pair them with chapter-wise tests and JEE Advanced previous year papers to judge the real difficulty level. If you are still clearing the first stage, start with JEE Main mock tests and move to Advanced-level papers once your JEE Main scores are stable.
