JIPMER Nursing Officer Syllabus: NORCET Topic Guide

The JIPMER Nursing Officer syllabus is not a fixed topic list. JIPMER fills these posts through the Nursing Officer Recruitment Common Eligibility Test (NORCET) conducted by AIIMS New Delhi, and the notification says the syllabus follows the nursing courses taught at the essential qualification level. For the Main stage, it adds that questions are case scenario based and test nursing skills.

This page turns that statement into a working checklist for the NORCET Preliminary and Main stages, shows where the two stages overlap, and gives a phased plan. The topic lists below are built from the official notification and from the standard nursing curriculum. Use them as a checklist, not as an official list.

Key changes and points to know

  • Stage I is qualifying only: It is not used for merit or rank, so its syllabus matters mainly for clearing the percentile.

  • Stage II covers the whole course: The Main paper covers the entire syllabus of the nursing courses at the essential qualification level.

  • Case based questions: Stage II is focused on case scenarios that test nursing skills competency, so application matters more than recall.

  • One mark per question: The notification gives 100 marks for 100 questions and 160 marks for 160 questions. Older pages may still show a different mark per question, so follow the official notification.

Stage I syllabus

Stage I has 20 questions on General Knowledge and Aptitude and 80 questions on the nursing syllabus. The notification does not break these down further, so the table below is a working checklist.

Section

Topics to cover

Start with

General Knowledge and Aptitude (20 questions)

Current affairs, health and nursing news, general science, reasoning, basic numerical ability, English comprehension

Last six months of current affairs and health schemes

Nursing subjects (80 questions)

Anatomy, physiology, microbiology, nutrition, fundamentals of nursing, medical-surgical nursing, child health, mental health, midwifery, community health

Fundamentals of nursing and medical-surgical nursing, which feed every other subject

The nursing portion carries four times the weight of General Knowledge and Aptitude, so most of your Stage I preparation belongs to the nursing subjects.

Stage II syllabus

The Main paper has 160 questions in four timed sections of 40 questions each. The notification does not name the sections, so the subject groups below are a planning aid.

Foundation subjects

  • Anatomy and physiology: Body systems, normal values, and how they change in disease.

  • Microbiology and infection control: Common organisms, sterilisation, isolation, hospital infection prevention.

  • Nutrition and biochemistry: Nutrients, therapeutic diets, deficiency disorders.

  • Fundamentals of nursing: Nursing process, vital signs, medication administration, procedures, documentation.

  • Pharmacology: Drug classes, doses, side effects and nursing responsibilities.

Clinical nursing subjects

  • Medical-surgical nursing: Cardiac, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, neurological, endocrine and orthopaedic conditions, with pre- and post-operative care.

  • Emergency and critical care: Triage, shock, resuscitation, ventilation, burns, poisoning.

  • Child health nursing: Growth and development, immunisation, common childhood illnesses, neonatal care.

  • Obstetrics, gynaecology and midwifery: Antenatal, intranatal and postnatal care, complications, family planning.

  • Mental health nursing: Common psychiatric disorders, therapeutic communication, medication and safety.

Community and professional subjects

  • Community health nursing: National health programmes, epidemiology basics, health education, vital statistics.

  • Nursing education, administration and management: Teaching methods, ward management, leadership, supervision.

  • Nursing research and statistics: Basic research terms, sampling, simple data interpretation.

  • Professional trends: Ethics, legal responsibilities, nursing councils, patient rights.

Candidates who qualify through the GNM route should cover the same areas at the depth taught in their own course, since the notification ties the syllabus to the essential qualification.

Interview or personality test

The NORCET notification describes two computer based stages, followed by seat allocation on merit and choice, and then document verification. It does not describe an interview or personality test, so there is no separate syllabus for one.

How to cover the syllabus

  1. Weeks 1 to 6: Revise foundation subjects and fundamentals of nursing, and read a short current affairs digest every day.

  2. Weeks 7 to 12: Move through medical-surgical, child health, midwifery, mental health and community health, making short notes for each unit.

  3. Weeks 13 to 16: Add case-based practice for every clinical subject and attempt sectional timed sets of 18 minutes for Stage I style and 45 minutes for Stage II style.

  4. Final phase: Take full-length timed papers, review every wrong answer the same day, and revise your error log.

Official notices are on the JIPMER announcement page.
