JKSSB JE Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Domicile
JKSSB JE eligibility rests on four conditions: the right engineering qualification, the age limit for your category, a valid Domicile Certificate of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, and certificates that are dated on or before the cut-off date. The Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) checks all four at document verification, and it can reject a candidate at any stage if one of them fails.
This page explains the eligibility rules for the 2026 cycle, which covers Advertisement Notification No. 10 of 2026 for Junior Engineer (Mechanical) and No. 11 of 2026 for Junior Engineer (Civil). Age is counted as on 1 January 2026, and the last date to apply also works as the cut-off date for certificates. The same structure of rules applied to the 2025 Electrical and Civil recruitments, so the guidance is useful for later cycles as well.

Educational Qualification
Each Junior Engineer post has a branch-specific qualification. You need one of the three routes below in the same branch as the post you apply for.
Post | Accepted Qualifications |
|---|---|
Junior Engineer (Civil), Jal Shakti and PW (R&B) | Three-year diploma in Civil Engineering from a government-recognised institute or Indian university; or a degree in Civil Engineering; or AMIE Sections A and B (Civil) from India |
Junior Engineer (Mechanical), PW (R&B) | Three-year diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a government-recognised institute; or a degree in Mechanical Engineering from an Indian university; or AMIE Sections A and B (Mechanical) from India |
Junior Engineer (Electrical), Power Development Department (2025 cycle) | Diploma, degree or AMIE Sections A and B in Electrical Engineering, as per that advertisement |
Qualification Must Be Held by the Cut-Off Date
You must hold the qualifying certificate on or before the cut-off date in your advertisement. Candidates awaiting a final result after that date are not eligible for that recruitment, even if the result is declared before the exam. Keep your final marksheet and diploma or degree certificate ready, because the originals are checked at document verification and your candidature stays provisional until then.
Equivalent Qualifications
JKSSB accepts only the qualifications prescribed in the notification. If your qualification has a different title but you consider it equivalent, you must produce an equivalence certificate, or obtain equivalence when the Board asks for it. The Board's decision on equivalence is final, and a candidate holding a qualification outside the prescribed list is rejected at any stage.
Bonafide Certificate for Degrees From Outside J&K
If your degree is from a recognised university outside the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, other than a central university, you need a bonafide certificate in the format prescribed by the Board. It is issued by the Controller of Examinations or the Registrar of the university. Request it early, as some universities take weeks to issue it.
Diploma Versus Degree
Both diploma and degree holders compete in the same merit list for the same posts. A degree gives no extra marks or preference in selection, which is based only on the written exam score. The paper is pitched at diploma level, but degree holders often bring stronger fundamentals in numerical subjects.
JKSSB JE Age Limit
Age is calculated as on 1 January 2026 for both 2026 Junior Engineer notifications.
Category | Upper Age Limit | Born Not Before | Born Not After |
|---|---|---|---|
OM (Open Merit) | 40 years | 01.01.1986 | 01.01.2008 |
SC, ST-1, ST-2, RBA, ALC/IB, EWS, OBC | 43 years | 01.01.1983 | 01.01.2008 |
PwBD | 42 years | 01.01.1984 | 01.01.2008 |
Ex-Servicemen | See rule below | As per notification | 01.01.2008 |
Age Rule for Ex-Servicemen
An Ex-Serviceman may deduct the period of service in the Armed Forces from actual age. If the resulting age does not exceed the maximum age limit by more than three years, the candidate meets the age condition.
Example of an eligible case: An Ex-Serviceman applying in the OM category is 45 years old on 01.01.2026 and has six years of service. The resulting age is 39, which is within the OM limit of 40, so the candidate is eligible.
Example of an ineligible case: An OM Ex-Serviceman is 50 years old with six years of service. The resulting age is 44, which exceeds 40 by four years, more than the three years allowed, so the candidate is not eligible.
Ex-Servicemen must also furnish Form XIV under Rule 18 of the J&K Reservation Rules, 2005, along with an affidavit, to claim the benefit.
How to Check Your Own Age
Use the date of birth on your Class 10 certificate. Count your completed years on 1 January 2026, and compare your date of birth with the window in the table for your category. If you were born exactly on a boundary date, read the notification wording carefully or check with the Board, because these dates decide eligibility outright.
Domicile Requirement
Junior Engineer posts under JKSSB are open only to domiciles of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir. You must hold a valid Domicile Certificate in the prescribed format, issued by the competent authority on or before the cut-off date. A certificate issued after the cut-off date is not accepted, even if you were otherwise eligible for domicile earlier.
Keep the original ready: It is checked at document verification along with your other certificates.
Match the details: The name and parentage on the Domicile Certificate should match your educational certificates. Small spelling differences can delay verification.
Apply early if you do not have one: Issue of the certificate takes time, and the cut-off date is fixed in the notification.
Reservation and Category Certificates
Vacancies are reserved as per the requisition of the indenting department and the J&K Reservation Act and Rules, as amended. The vertical categories used in JKSSB JE notifications are listed below.
Category | Meaning | Upper Age Limit |
|---|---|---|
OM | Open Merit | 40 years |
SC | Scheduled Caste | 43 years |
ST-1 and ST-2 | Scheduled Tribe groups as notified in J&K | 43 years |
OBC | Other Backward Classes | 43 years |
RBA | Resident of Backward Area | 43 years |
ALC/IB | Resident of areas along the Actual Line of Control or International Border | 43 years |
EWS | Economically Weaker Sections | 43 years |
Horizontal reservation applies to Ex-Servicemen and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities. For Ex-Servicemen, it applies to posts up to Level 6E, which covers Junior Engineer posts at Level 6. Every reserved-category candidate must upload a valid category certificate in the prescribed format, issued on or before the cut-off date. Without a valid certificate, the reserved-category claim cannot be accepted.
Cut-Off Dates That Decide Eligibility
Particular | JE (Mechanical), No. 10 of 2026 | JE (Civil), No. 11 of 2026 |
|---|---|---|
Age calculated as on | 01.01.2026 | 01.01.2026 |
Application window | 16.11.2026 to 15.12.2026 | 30.11.2026 to 29.12.2026 |
Qualification, domicile and category certificates held by | 15.12.2026 | 29.12.2026 |
The notification fixes these cut-off dates unless JKSSB extends them, so read any extension notice carefully. Dates come from the notification schedule and can change, so track the official website and your registered email.
Who Is Not Eligible
Non-domiciles: Candidates without a valid Domicile Certificate of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir cannot apply.
Wrong branch: A diploma in Mechanical Engineering does not qualify you for a Civil post, and the reverse is also true.
Unlisted qualifications: Qualifications outside the prescribed list, without an accepted equivalence certificate, lead to rejection.
Late certificates: Qualification, domicile or category certificates issued after the cut-off date are not accepted.
Over-age candidates: Candidates born before the date in the age table for their category are ineligible, subject only to the Ex-Servicemen rule.
Eligibility Self-Check in Six Steps
Run through these checks before you pay the fee. Each one reflects a condition JKSSB verifies at document verification.
Confirm the branch: Check that your diploma, degree or AMIE is in the same branch as the post, Civil for Notification No. 11 of 2026 and Mechanical for No. 10 of 2026.
Confirm the date on your certificate: The qualification must be completed and the certificate or final marksheet available by the cut-off date for your post.
Calculate your age: Compare your date of birth with the window for your category as on 01.01.2026.
Check your Domicile Certificate: It must be valid, in the prescribed format and issued on or before the cut-off date.
Check your category certificate: If you apply under a reserved category, the certificate must be valid, in the prescribed format and dated on or before the cut-off date.
Check extra certificates: If your qualification needs an equivalence certificate, or your degree is from a non-central university outside J&K, arrange the equivalence or bonafide certificate now.
If any step fails, fix it before the last date where possible. A rejection at document verification comes after months of preparation, so the few minutes this check takes are well spent.
How the Rules Compare With the 2025 Cycle
Particular | 2025 cycle (Civil No. 03 of 2025) | 2026 cycle (Civil No. 11 of 2026, Mechanical No. 10 of 2026) |
|---|---|---|
Age calculated as on | 01.01.2025 | 01.01.2026 |
OM upper age limit | 40 years | 40 years |
Qualification routes | Diploma, degree or AMIE (A and B) in Civil Engineering | Diploma, degree or AMIE (A and B) in the branch of the post |
Domicile | Domicile of the UT of J&K required | Domicile of the UT of J&K required |
Posts | 508 Civil (358 Jal Shakti, 150 PW (R&B)) | 458 Civil (282 Jal Shakti, 176 PW (R&B)) and 127 Mechanical (PW (R&B)) |
The age reference date moves forward by a year while the upper limit stays the same, so the earliest permitted date of birth also moves forward by a year. If you were close to the upper age limit in 2025, you may now be over it, so check your date of birth against the 2026 window before you apply.
