JPSC Civil Services Syllabus 2025: Prelims and Mains
The JPSC Civil Services syllabus covers two General Studies papers in the prelims and six descriptive papers in the mains of the Jharkhand Combined Civil Services Examination. The Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) publishes it with the exam rules, and the same scheme applies to the 2025 cycle under Advertisement No. 01/2026.
What sets this syllabus apart from other state PSC exams is how much of it is about Jharkhand itself: one full prelims paper and a section of almost every mains paper. This page breaks each paper into topics, shows where prelims and mains overlap, and ends with a phased plan to cover everything. Use it as a working checklist alongside the official syllabus PDF.

Key Points Before You Start
The syllabus has not changed with the schedule: The 2025 cycle's dates have shifted several times, but the papers and topics are the same as in the published scheme.
Jharkhand is not optional: GS Paper II is almost entirely about the state, and Papers III, V and VI of the mains have Jharkhand sections.
There is no optional subject: The current mains has no optional subject. Paper II (language and literature) is the only paper where you choose.
Watch out for old pages: Some pages still list Paper I of the mains as a 150-mark merit paper. Under the current rules it is a 100-mark qualifying paper.
The official syllabus PDF is listed on the JPSC syllabus page: https://www.jpsc.gov.in/Syllabus.php. The topic lists below summarise it in a study-friendly order.
JPSC Prelims Syllabus: General Studies Paper I
Paper I is a broad general studies paper. The published syllabus gives an indicative number of questions for each area, which helps you weigh your time.
Section | Approx. questions | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|
History of India | 15 | Ancient, medieval and modern India (5 each), freedom struggle | Modern India and the national movement |
Geography of India | 10 | Physical features, climate, rivers, soils, resources, population | Physical geography and resources |
Indian Polity and Governance | 10 | Constitution, Parliament, judiciary, local bodies, rights | Fundamental Rights and Union executive |
Economy and Sustainable Development | 10 | Planning, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector schemes | Basic economic terms and schemes |
Science and Technology | 15 | Everyday science, space, IT, biotechnology, health | Recent developments and basic biology |
Jharkhand general awareness | 10 | State history, society, culture and heritage | Overlaps with Paper II |

Miscellaneous | 15 | Human rights, environment, urbanisation, sports, awards, UN bodies, disaster management, poverty and unemployment | Static facts on awards and organisations |
History, science and technology, current events and miscellaneous topics together account for about 60 questions. Current events and miscellaneous topics reward a steady reading habit more than last-minute cramming.
JPSC Prelims Syllabus: General Studies Paper II
Paper II is where JPSC tests knowledge of Jharkhand. Candidates from outside the state often find it the harder of the two papers, while local candidates can gain a real edge with focused preparation.

Land laws alone carry about 12 questions, more than any other single section. Read the CNT and SPT Acts section by section rather than from summaries.
JPSC Mains Syllabus: Paper I and Paper II
Paper I: General Hindi and General English
This 100-mark paper has 50 marks for Hindi and 50 for English. It is qualifying only, but failing it means your other papers are not evaluated for merit.
Essay: One essay of about 400 words in each language.
Grammar: Sentence correction, usage, vocabulary.
Comprehension and precis: Reading a passage, answering questions and summarising it.
Paper II: Language and Literature
Candidates choose one language for this 150-mark paper. The paper usually covers the history of the language, its grammar and prescribed literary works. The 15 options are:
Group | Languages |
|---|---|
National and neighbouring-state languages | Hindi, English, Urdu, Sanskrit, Bangla, Odia |
Tribal and regional languages of Jharkhand | Santhali, Mundari, Ho, Kharia, Kurux, Kurmali, Khortha, Nagpuri, Panchpargania |
Pick a language you can read and write fluently and whose prescribed literature you can finish in time. Check the full prescribed texts in the official syllabus before deciding.
Mains Paper III: History and Geography
History
Ancient India: Indus Valley, Vedic age, Mauryas, Guptas, Harsha and South Indian kingdoms.
Medieval India: Delhi Sultanate, Bhakti and Sufi movements, Mughals, Marathas.
Modern India: European arrivals, British expansion, early resistance, reform movements, the national movement and India after independence.
History of Jharkhand: Tribal revolts, the Birsa Munda and Tana Bhagat movements, Jharkhand's role in the freedom struggle.
Geography
Physical geography: Earth's structure, landforms, atmosphere, oceans.
Geography of India: Physical regions, climate, natural resources, agriculture, industries, transport and trade, population.

Mains Paper IV: Constitution, Polity and Governance
Indian Constitution: Preamble, Fundamental Rights and Duties, Directive Principles, Union and State governments, judiciary.

Public administration: Union, state and district administration, personnel administration, the role of bureaucracy, development administration.
Good governance: Accountability bodies, RTI, citizen charters, e-governance, human rights and disaster management.
Scheduled Areas and the Fifth Schedule matter more here than in most state exams, because much of Jharkhand falls under them.

Overlap Between Prelims and Mains
Most of the prelims syllabus feeds directly into the mains. Studying each area once, with both stages in mind, saves several weeks.
Area | Prelims | Mains | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
History | GS Paper I | Paper III | Read once in depth, make short fact sheets for prelims |
Geography | GS Paper I | Paper III | Use maps throughout; add Jharkhand maps |
Polity and governance | GS Paper I | Paper IV | Learn articles for prelims, write analytical answers for mains |
Economy | GS Paper I | Paper V | Concepts first, then data and schemes |
Science and environment | GS Paper I | Paper VI | Cover basics, then current developments |
Jharkhand | GS Paper II | Papers III, V, VI | One state notebook used for both stages |
Sources for Each Part of the Syllabus
A short list of sources, read more than once, works better than a long list read once. Build your reading around these types of material.
Part of the syllabus | Type of source | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
History, geography, polity, economy, science | NCERT textbooks, then one standard reference book per subject | NCERTs for basics, reference books for depth and mains answers |
Constitution and governance | Text of the Constitution, official reports on governance | Check exact articles and schedules |
Jharkhand history and culture | State-focused books and state government publications | Build the Jharkhand notebook topic by topic |
Jharkhand economy and schemes | State budget and economic survey documents | Note recent figures and flagship schemes |
Land laws | Text of the CNT and SPT Acts | Read key sections directly, not only summaries |
Current affairs | One national and one state newspaper, monthly compilations | Make monthly notes, revise every quarter |
Question trends | JPSC previous question papers | Mark which syllabus lines get asked repeatedly |
Previous papers are the most reliable guide to depth. If a topic has never been asked beyond basic facts, do not spend weeks on it; if it appears every cycle, such as land laws or the Jharkhand movement, go deeper.
Keep a one-page tracker of syllabus lines against previous questions. It turns the syllabus from a long list into a ranked plan and shows at a glance which sections still need work before your next full-length test.
Is There a Syllabus for the Interview?
No. The interview carries 100 marks but has no prescribed syllabus. Boards usually ask about your background, your graduation subject, Jharkhand's current issues, administration and your choice of service. Your mains preparation and newspaper reading form the base for it.
