KVS PGT Eligibility 2026: Qualification and Age Limit

KVS PGT eligibility is set by Recruitment Notification 01/2025, the combined recruitment for Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) conducted by CBSE. To apply for a Post Graduate Teacher post, you need a master's degree in the subject with at least 50% marks, a B.Ed. or an equivalent NCTE-recognised course, and an age of 40 years or less, with relaxations for several categories.

The date that matters most is the cut-off date: the notification assesses age, qualification and experience as on 4 December 2025, the original closing date of the application window. This page explains the qualification rules subject by subject, age limits and relaxations, other conditions and the most common reasons candidates turn out to be ineligible.

Educational qualification

For PGT posts other than Computer Science, Physical Education and Modern Indian Language, the notification sets three conditions.

  1. Subject qualification: An integrated post graduate course in the concerned subject from an NCTE-recognised institution with at least 50% marks in aggregate including the B.Ed. component, or a master's degree from a recognised university with at least 50% marks in aggregate in the concerned subject.

  2. Teacher training (if you hold a plain master's degree): B.Ed. with at least 50% marks, or a three-year integrated B.Ed.-M.Ed. with at least 50%, or a four-year integrated degree with at least 50% including a B.Ed. component, all from NCTE-recognised institutions.

  3. Teaching language: Proficiency to teach in Hindi and English medium.

The notification also lists desirable qualifications: experience as a TGT in the concerned subject, experience of working in a school (KVS) or a residential school (NVS), and knowledge of computer applications. These are not required to apply.

Percentage and grades

The minimum is 50% as printed, and the notification gives no rule for rounding off, so do not count on 49.5% being treated as 50%. If your marksheet shows grades or CGPA, you must produce the equivalent percentage at the interview or document verification. Check the conversion formula with your university, as CBSE's own FAQ advises.

CBSE told candidates in November 2025 that the portal stops you from going further if you pick a qualification that does not match exactly, and that no relaxation or interpretation of qualifications is allowed.

Age limit and relaxation

The upper age limit for PGT is 40 years and the minimum is 18 years, both counted as on 4 December 2025. The last date for applying was later extended to 11 December 2025, but the interview bio-data form issued in August 2026 still states the age cut-off as 4 December 2025.

Points to note:

  • One relaxation only: Relaxations are concurrent, not added up. If you qualify under more than one, you get the single highest one.

  • Women with disability: The 10-year relaxation for women does not apply to a woman with disability, who is covered by the PwBD relaxation instead.

  • KVS employees with disability: They get an additional 5 years on top of the PwBD relaxation.

  • Ex-servicemen: KVS and NVS each have their own rules, based on deducting military service from actual age. Read the notification section for your case.

Nationality and other conditions

  • Nationality: Only Indian nationals can apply.

  • Posting: Selected candidates can be posted anywhere in India, and requests for a change of station or region are not entertained.

  • NVS residential duties: Teachers in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas live on campus and take on duties such as house mastership and supervised study. NVS pays an extra 10% special allowance for these duties.

  • PwBD functional requirements: PwBD candidates must check that they meet the functional requirements listed for PGT posts, and produce a medical certificate confirming this at the final stage.

  • Probation: Selected candidates serve two years on probation, which can be extended.

Applying to both KVS and NVS

The combined notification lets you apply for the same PGT post in KVS and NVS, but only if your qualification matches each organisation's wording. For PGT (Hindi), PGT (English) and PGT (Commerce), Corrigendum 2 of 4 December 2025 made the qualifications identical, and applicants who had applied to only one organisation got a window up to 15 December 2025 to add the other. Some posts exist in only one organisation: PGT (Bio-Technology) is KVS only, while PGT (Physical Education) and PGT (Modern Indian Language) are NVS only.

If you are in the merit list of both organisations, you submit a preference in your login and are allotted only one post. Candidates who do not submit a preference in the notified period are not considered.

How to check your eligibility

  1. Find your PGT subject in the notification and read the qualification line word by word.

  2. Check the percentage on your master's degree and B.Ed. marksheets, converting grades if needed.

  3. Confirm both degrees were complete by the cut-off date.

  4. Work out your age on the cut-off date and add only the single highest relaxation you qualify for.

  5. Keep category certificates in the prescribed format and within the dates set by the notification.

Category certificates

Category

What the notification requires

OBC (NCL)

Central list OBC certificate in the prescribed format, issued between 1 January 2025 and the last date of application; creamy layer candidates apply as General

EWS

Income and asset certificate in the prescribed format; family gross annual income below Rs. 8 lakh and asset limits as set out in the notification

SC and ST

Certificate in the prescribed format, held by the closing date

PwBD

Disability certificate in the prescribed format and the UDID card; temporary disability certificates do not qualify for reservation

Who is not eligible

  • Late qualifications: Degrees or certificates obtained after the cut-off date do not count.

  • Below 50%: A master's degree or B.Ed. with less than 50% marks does not meet the requirement.

  • Subject mismatch: For most science and humanities subjects, a master's degree without the subject at graduation level is not enough. For Commerce, an M.Com. in Applied or Business Economics is not accepted.

  • Non-recognised B.Ed.: The B.Ed. or integrated course must be from an NCTE-recognised institution.

  • Multiple PGT subjects: You can apply in only one PGT subject. Multiple applications for a post can be cancelled with the fee forfeited.

  • Over-age without a valid relaxation: Category claims need the right certificate by the closing date, or the relaxation is lost.

Clearing Tier 1 or Tier 2 does not mean your eligibility has been accepted. KVS and NVS can verify it at any stage, including after joining, and reject candidates found ineligible.

Fee and documents

The PGT examination fee was Rs. 1,500 plus a Rs. 500 processing fee, with GST charged extra by the bank. SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen candidates paid only the processing fee. At the interview, candidates bring the application printout and self-attested copies of certificates for age, qualification, experience and category.
