Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan Stenographer

KVS Stenographer is a recruitment exam conducted by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan for the recruitment of Stenographers, relevant to candidates preparing for recruitment at public sector undertakings and central institutions.

KVS Stenographer recruitment fills Stenographer Grade I and Grade II posts in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), the body that runs Kendriya Vidyalayas across India. In the latest cycle, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the exam on behalf of KVS and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) under the combined Recruitment Notification 01/2025, released on 13 November 2025. Stenographer posts in that notification are with KVS only.

As of October 2026, no new KVS Stenographer notification has been released, so this page uses the 2025 cycle as the reference. Tier 1 was held in January 2026, Tier 2 in March 2026, and the Stenographer Grade II Tier 2 result was declared on 23 August 2026. Below you will find vacancies, eligibility, fees, the two-tier exam pattern, the skill test, salary and a preparation plan.

KVS Stenographer Notification Overview

KVS and NVS moved to a single combined recruitment drive in the 2025 cycle, with CBSE handling registration, fees, Tier 1 and Tier 2. The notification was followed by three corrigenda. Two of them matter for Stenographer candidates:

  • Corrigendum 1 (21 November 2025): Raised the Grade I skill test norms to 100 words per minute dictation and 45 words per minute typing. Grade II norms stayed unchanged.

  • Corrigendum 3 (10 December 2025): Revised Grade I vacancies from 3 to 5. Grade II stayed at 57.

You can read the full notification and corrigenda on the CBSE recruitment page.

KVS Stenographer Exam Pattern

The 2025 cycle uses a two-tier written exam followed by a skill test.

Each question carries 3 marks and 1 mark is deducted for a wrong answer. There is no separate time limit for each part. Tier 1 is an OMR-based screening test that shortlists candidates for Tier 2 at 10 times the vacancies.

Tier 2 (Subject Knowledge)

Descriptive

10

Total (2 hours 30 minutes)

70

100

Objective questions carry 1 mark each with 0.25 deducted for a wrong answer. The merit list is prepared on Tier 2 marks, subject to qualifying the skill test.

Skill Test (Qualifying)

  • Shorthand: 10 minutes of dictation at 80 words per minute for Grade II (100 for Grade I), transcribed on computer in 50 minutes (English) or 65 minutes (Hindi).

  • Typing: Net speed of 40 words per minute in English or 35 in Hindi for Grade II (45 for Grade I).

  • Computer Proficiency Test: 100 marks covering MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and the internet, with at least 40 percent needed.

What this means for you:

  • Tier 1 only gets you in: It does not count in the final merit, so aim to clear it with a margin and move on.

  • Tier 2 decides your rank: Every mark here matters, including the 40-mark descriptive section.

  • Skill is a gate, not a bonus: A high Tier 2 score is wasted if you miss the shorthand, typing or CPT standard, so practise skills from day one.

Older pages may still show a single written exam and a Class 12 qualification for Grade II, so follow the 2025 notification.

KVS Stenographer Selection Process

  1. Tier 1: Screening test. Candidates are shortlisted for Tier 2 at 1:10 of the vacancies, including ties at the last mark.

  2. Tier 2: Subject knowledge test out of 100 marks. Candidates are shortlisted for the skill test at 1:5 of the vacancies, including ties.

  3. Skill test: Shorthand, typing and the Computer Proficiency Test. All are qualifying.

  4. Merit and document verification: The final merit follows Tier 2 marks for those who qualify the skill test. There is no interview for Stenographer posts.

KVS Stenographer Salary and Career Growth

Stenographer Grade II

Level 4

Rs. 25,500 to 81,100

Stenographer Grade I

Level 6

Rs. 35,400 to 1,12,400

Allowances such as dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are added to the basic pay as per Central Government rules. In-hand pay is not an official figure, and it varies with the city of posting and current DA rates. Selected candidates can be posted anywhere in India. Grade II is the usual entry point, because Grade I recruitment asks for five years of service as Stenographer Grade II.

How to Prepare for KVS Stenographer

  • Build skill and theory together: Do 30 to 45 minutes of shorthand dictation and typing practice daily from the first week, alongside written exam study.

  • Clear Tier 1 with a margin: Reasoning, numeric ability, computer literacy and GK carry 240 of 300 marks. Avoid wild guesses, since a wrong answer costs 1 mark.

  • Prepare for the descriptive part: Practise short written answers with a time limit, following the official Tier 2 syllabus.

  • Use full-length mocks: In the last six to eight weeks, take timed mocks and review every wrong and skipped question.

KVS Stenographer Cut Off Reference

CBSE has not published category-wise cut-offs for the 2025 cycle. Candidates for posts without an interview see their Tier 2 marks in the candidate login. For context, 4,429 candidates appeared in Tier 1 for 57 Grade II posts, roughly 78 candidates per post, as calculated from CBSE's category-wise statistics. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Treat past figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them.
