Maharashtra HSC Exam Pattern 2027: Subject-wise Marking Scheme

The Maharashtra HSC exam pattern decides how your Class 12 marks are earned: how much of each subject is theory, how much is practical or oral, how the question paper is divided into sections and how much choice you get. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), Pune, sets one common pattern for Science, Commerce and Arts students across all nine divisional boards.

This page explains the pattern for the February-March 2027 exams, which follow the same structure as 2026. You will find subject-wise marks, section-wise question tables for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English, the passing rules, paper timings and a time plan for each section. Theory exams run from 8 February to 16 March 2027, with practicals and orals from 20 January to 6 February 2027.

Key Changes to Know

  • No pattern change for 2027: Students appearing in February-March 2027 write the same paper structure as the 2026 batch. The full syllabus applies.

  • New pattern from the 2027-28 session: The board has announced a revised syllabus and a more competency-based exam pattern for Classes 10 and 12 from 2027-28. That affects the 2028 HSC batch onwards, not 2027.

  • Reading time replaced by extra writing time: Since 2024, question papers are handed out at the start time instead of 10 minutes early, and those 10 minutes are added at the end. A 3-hour paper now runs for 190 minutes.

  • Total is 600, not 650: Some older pages still show 650 marks and a separate reading period. Follow the current board circulars instead.

Subject-wise Marks Distribution

Every subject carries 100 marks. What changes is how those marks are split between the written paper and the internal component your junior college assesses.

What this means for you:

  • Section A is compulsory and textbook-based: 18 of 70 marks in PCB and 20 of 80 in Maths come from questions you cannot skip. Line-by-line textbook reading protects these marks.

  • Choice is generous in the middle: In Sections B and C you answer 8 of 12. If you have prepared about 75% of chapters well, you will usually find enough questions you can answer fully.

  • Section D rewards derivations and full solutions: In PCB you pick 3 of 5 long answers. Strong preparation of standard derivations, diagrams and multi-step problems gives you safe choices here.

  • MCQs count only on the first attempt: The paper instructions state that only your first answer to an MCQ is evaluated, so overwriting an option does not help.

HSC English Paper Pattern

English carries 80 marks in the written paper and 20 marks for oral assessment. The question paper follows the four sections of the Yuvakbharati textbook.

Section

What it tests

Marks

I: Prose

Two passages with activities (comprehension, vocabulary, grammar in context), non-textual grammar, summary writing and mind-mapping

34

II: Poetry

Poem extract with activities and poetic devices, plus a poetry appreciation

14

III: Writing skills

Four tasks, each with a choice of formats such as email, report, speech, statement of purpose, interview questions, review or blog

16

IV: Literary genre

Objective and short-answer questions on the prescribed genre unit

Writing-skills tasks carry marks for format as well as content. Learn the layout of each format once, and those 16 marks become far more predictable.

Commerce and Arts Paper Pattern

Commerce and Arts papers are 80-mark theory papers. Most of them open with a compulsory objective question and then move to answers that get longer and carry more marks, with internal choice.

Book-Keeping and Accountancy

The first question carries 20 marks of compulsory objective items such as MCQs, fill in the blanks, odd one out and agree or disagree statements. The rest of the paper consists of practical problems worth roughly 8 to 12 marks each, on partnership final accounts, reconstitution, dissolution, not-for-profit concerns, bills of exchange and analysis of financial statements, with choice in some questions.

Economics

Economics also opens with 20 marks of compulsory objective questions. The following questions move from identifying and distinguishing concepts to agree-or-disagree reasoning, data or diagram-based questions and long answers of 8 marks, and you choose a set number from each group.

Other Commerce and Arts subjects

Organisation of Commerce and Management, Secretarial Practice, History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology and Psychology follow the same broad logic: an objective opening question, short reasoning questions, and long descriptive answers. Practise writing answers in clear points with an introduction and a short conclusion. Use maps and diagrams where the subject allows.

Practical, Oral and Internal Assessment

Internal marks are assessed by your junior college before the theory exams, from 20 January to 6 February 2027 for this cycle. They are recorded with the board and count in your subject total.

A complete journal and a prepared viva are the cheapest marks in the whole exam. Treat the practical period as part of the board exam, not as a separate college formality.

Marking Scheme, Passing Marks and Divisions

There is no negative marking in any HSC paper, so attempt every compulsory question. To pass, you need 35% in each subject, and the theory and internal parts are checked separately against the same 35% mark.

Subject type

Theory minimum

Internal minimum

Subject minimum

80 + 20 subjects

70 + 30 subjects

11 out of 30 (10.5 rounded up)

35 out of 100

Your result category depends on your aggregate percentage out of 600.

Aggregate percentage

First Division

Second Division

Pass

Worked example: A Science student scores 72, 78, 85, 88, 81 and 76 in English, a second language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. The total is 480 out of 600, which is 80%, a Distinction. A student who takes Information Technology in place of a second language has those marks counted in that slot instead.

Exam Timing and Paper-Day Rules

HSC papers are held in two sessions. Since 2024 the board has run them from 11:00 am to 2:10 pm and from 3:00 pm to 6:10 pm, with question papers handed out at the start time. Confirm the 2027 timings on the subject-wise timetable and your hall ticket.

  • Start each section on a new page: Paper instructions ask for this, and it makes checking easier for the examiner.

  • Log tables yes, calculators no: This applies to Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

  • Carry your hall ticket to every paper: Your junior college issues it before the practicals begin. Entry is refused without it.

How to Manage Time in a 3-Hour HSC Paper

You have 190 minutes. A plan for a 70-mark Science paper:

Section

Marks

Suggested time

A (MCQs and very short answers)

18

20 minutes

B (8 short answers of 2 marks)

16

35 minutes

C (8 short answers of 3 marks)

24

60 minutes

D (3 long answers of 4 marks)

12

45 minutes

Reading choices and final check

-

30 minutes

  1. Read the whole paper first: Spend five minutes marking which questions you will attempt in Sections B, C and D.

  2. Finish Section A without stalling: If an MCQ needs too long, mark it and return to it later.

  3. Write to the marks: A 2-mark answer needs two clear points or one short calculation, not a page.

  4. Keep the last 15 minutes for checking: Look for skipped sub-parts, missing units and unlabelled diagrams.

In the 80-mark Maths paper, shift time from Section A to Section D, where five 4-mark problems need about 50 minutes.

Older pages and guidebooks may still show the earlier 650-mark structure or the old reading time, so rely on the official circulars on mahahsscboard.in. The Maharashtra HSC exam pattern for 2027 is stable and predictable: protect your internal marks, secure the compulsory Section A, and use the choice in later sections wisely.
