MPSC State Service Eligibility: Age, Qualification and Rules
To be eligible for the MPSC State Service Exam, you need a bachelor's degree, an age within the limit set in the advertisement, Indian citizenship and a working knowledge of Marathi. These are the basic conditions, and the advertisement adds post-specific rules on top of them.
This page explains each condition in plain terms, separates rules that rarely change from details that belong to a particular advertisement, and lists the mistakes that lead to rejection. The Maharashtra Public Service Commission publishes the final conditions in every advertisement on https://mpsc.gov.in, and that document overrides everything written here.

Educational Qualification
General requirement
A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Government of India or the Maharashtra Government, is the baseline for most State Service posts. Arts, science, commerce, engineering, law, agriculture and management graduates are all eligible, unless a post says otherwise.
Post-specific qualifications
Some posts ask for more than a degree. Read the post list in the advertisement before you fill in the form. Examples from recent advertisements include:
Maharashtra Veterinary Services: A veterinary science degree with registration under the applicable veterinary council rules.
Finance and Accounts posts: A commerce degree with a minimum percentage, or a chartered accountancy qualification, as stated for the post in earlier advertisements.
Technical posts: Some technical posts in the wider combined advertisement ask for an engineering degree in specified branches.
If you apply for several posts, you must meet the condition for each post you select in your preference list.
Final-year students and result dates
Final-year students can generally apply for the Prelims but must submit proof of passing before the stage the advertisement specifies, usually before the Mains or document verification. A pending result at that stage can lead to rejection even if you clear the exam, so track your university result date.
Degree equivalence and percentages
If your degree is from a foreign university, a deemed institution or an open university, keep the equivalence or recognition certificate ready. For posts with a minimum percentage, check how the Commission wants CGPA to be converted, and do not round up on your own.
Age Limit
For State Service posts in the Open category, the minimum age is 19 years and the maximum is 38 years. The Commission counts age as on a particular date, which it states in the advertisement. In recent cycles this date has been reported as 1 March of the year, but you must confirm the date in the advertisement you are applying for.
Category | Upper age limit (years) |
|---|---|
Open (General) | 38 |
Reserved categories (SC, ST, VJ/DT, NT, SBC, OBC, SEBC) | 43 |
Orphans | 43 |
Ex-servicemen | 43 (reported) |
Meritorious sportspersons | 43 |
Persons with benchmark disabilities | 45 |
These figures follow the relaxation pattern reported in recent advertisements. Extra relaxation may apply for some categories, such as certain ex-servicemen, and for existing government employees under state rules, with the certificate in the prescribed format. Any special age concession announced by the state government for a particular year will be mentioned in that year's advertisement, so check for it there.
An example
If the age reference date is 1 March 2026, an Open category candidate must have been born on or after 2 March 1987 to be within 38 years, and on or before 1 March 2007 to have completed 19 years. This is only an illustration. Always count from the date in your advertisement, not from the application date.
Nationality, Language and Domicile
Nationality: You must be an Indian citizen. Keep proof of nationality for document verification.
Marathi: The Commission requires adequate knowledge of Marathi, meaning you can read, write and speak it. The Mains includes qualifying papers in Marathi and English.
Domicile and reservation: Reservation benefits and age concessions meant for Maharashtra apply to candidates who submit the required Maharashtra caste, non-creamy layer or domicile documents in the format stated in the advertisement. If you are from outside Maharashtra, check how the advertisement treats your category.
Candidates who studied outside Maharashtra should start Marathi reading and writing early, since written Marathi is checked in the Mains.
Number of Attempts
Reports about attempt limits are not consistent. Some pages mention limits for earlier cycles, such as 6 attempts for the Open category, 9 for backward classes and no limit for SC and ST candidates, while other pages say the Commission does not prescribe a fixed number of attempts for Rajyaseva. We could not confirm the position in the 2026 advertisement text, so treat this point as unverified.
Before you plan a long preparation, read the "Number of attempts" clause in the latest advertisement. If limits apply, the Commission usually counts an attempt when you appear in the Prelims, so appearing without preparation can cost you a chance.
Physical Standards for Certain Posts
Most administrative posts have no physical standards. Posts such as Deputy Superintendent of Police have height and other physical requirements, which the advertisement lists with the post. Reported minimums for the police post are 165 cm for men and 157 cm for women, but check the exact figures, including chest measurements, in the advertisement.
If you want a police post, check these standards before you add it to your preference list. The advertisement also explains what happens to your candidature for other posts if you do not meet the physical or medical standards for one of them.
Who Is Not Eligible
Final-year students without a degree by the cut-off stage: If proof of passing is not available in time, your candidature can be cancelled.
Candidates outside the age window on the reference date: Even a few days beyond the limit leads to rejection.
Candidates without the required post-specific degree: You can apply only for the posts whose conditions you meet.
Candidates with incorrect or missing certificates: Caste, non-creamy layer, EWS, disability or sports certificates that do not match the stated format and validity are rejected at verification.
Candidates without Marathi knowledge: The Commission requires adequate knowledge of Marathi for the posts.
Candidates who give false information: The Commission can cancel candidature at any stage, including after selection.
Reservation and Category Certificates
Reservation in Maharashtra follows state government rules and is applied by social category and by special groups. To claim a benefit, you must hold the right certificate in the format and validity period the advertisement mentions.
Caste certificate and validity: Candidates in reserved categories usually need a caste certificate, and a caste validity certificate where the rules ask for it. If the validity certificate is not yet issued, the advertisement may allow an acknowledgement of your application, so read this clause closely.
Non-creamy layer certificate: Backward class candidates claiming reservation need a valid non-creamy layer certificate. The certificate year matters, so check which financial year the Commission accepts.
EWS certificate: Candidates claiming the economically weaker section benefit must submit the certificate in the prescribed format and within its validity.
Open category: If you do not submit the required certificate on time, you are treated as an Open category candidate.
Applying for the wrong category cannot usually be corrected after the form is submitted, so decide your category before you register.
Special Categories
Women: A separate share is reserved for women candidates under state rules, which is why the Commission publishes separate cut-offs for women in most categories.
Meritorious sportspersons: Candidates with eligible sports achievements get age relaxation and a reserved share. Sports certificates must be issued by the authority named in the advertisement.
Orphans: Orphan candidates have a separate reservation and an age relaxation, and need the certificate prescribed by the state.
Persons with benchmark disabilities: Posts are marked as suitable for specific disability types, and candidates must check that their disability type matches the post. A disability certificate in the prescribed format is required.
Ex-servicemen: Age relaxation depends on the service rendered, and the advertisement explains how the period is counted.
Common Doubts Answered
Can I apply with a degree from an open or distance university? Yes, if the university is recognised. Keep the recognition details ready for verification.
Can I apply if my degree result is not out yet? Only if you are a final-year student and the advertisement allows it. You must produce proof of passing by the stated stage.
Does the discipline of my degree matter? For most State Service posts, no. It matters for posts that name a specific degree.
Is a gap after graduation a problem? No, there is no rule against a gap, as long as you are within the age limit on the reference date.
Do I need Marathi if I am from another state? Yes. Adequate knowledge of Marathi is required, and the Mains has a qualifying Marathi paper.
