National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Grade A

NABARD Grade A is a recruitment exam conducted by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, relevant to candidates preparing for insurance and financial-sector recruitment.

The NABARD Grade A exam is the officer-level recruitment run by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development for the post of Assistant Manager in Grade A. The largest stream is the Rural Development Banking Service (RDBS), and the same notification usually carries smaller openings in Legal and in Protocol and Security Service. For graduates, post-graduates and professionals such as CA, CS and engineers, it is one of the few development banking jobs with a defined officer career path.

As of 22 October 2026, we could not confirm an official notification for the 2026-27 cycle, so this page uses the 2025-26 cycle as the working reference. Year-specific details (dates, vacancies, fees, cut-offs) are labelled, and anything not yet confirmed is marked tentative. Always cross-check final details on the official website, https://www.nabard.org.

Notification status and what to expect

NABARD advertises Grade A posts once a year, and the 2025-26 recruitment came under Advertisement No. 05/Grade A/2025-26. It advertised 91 posts: 85 in RDBS, 2 in Legal and 4 in Protocol and Security Service. Applications ran in November 2025, Phase I was held on 20 December 2025 and Phase II on 25 January 2026.

For the 2026-27 cycle, third-party reports expect the notification in late October 2026 and Phase I in December 2026. These are expectations, not official announcements. Banking-exam notifications often arrive with only three to four weeks before the first exam, so waiting for the notification is a poor strategy. The syllabus and pattern have been stable across recent cycles, which makes early preparation safe.

Eligibility in brief

Educational qualification

For RDBS (General), the usual requirement is a Bachelor's degree with at least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwBD), or a post-graduate degree with at least 55% (50% for SC/ST/PwBD). CA, CS, CMA/ICWA and PhD holders also qualify under the General stream. Specialist streams such as Computer/IT, Finance and Engineering ask for specific degrees. Legal needs an LLB (60%) or LLM (55%) as per the notification.

Age limit

RDBS and Legal candidates are normally between 21 and 30 years on the cut-off date given in the notification. Protocol and Security Service has a higher range (25 to 40 years in the reference cycle) and needs commissioned service in the armed forces. Relaxations apply for SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), PwBD and ex-servicemen. The detailed rules, with worked cases, are on our eligibility page: NABARD Grade A eligibility criteria.

Application fee and how to apply

In the 2025-26 reference cycle, the fee was Rs. 850 for General, OBC and EWS candidates (Rs. 700 application fee plus Rs. 150 intimation charges) and Rs. 150 (intimation charges only) for SC/ST/PwBD candidates. NABARD staff candidates paid no application fee. Fees for the next cycle should be taken from the new notification.

The application is fully online. The usual steps are:

  1. Register: Open the careers section of the official website and register with a valid email address and mobile number.

  2. Fill the form: Enter personal, educational and category details exactly as in your certificates.

  3. Upload documents: Photograph, signature, left thumb impression and a handwritten declaration are commonly asked for, in the size and format given in the notification.

  4. Pay the fee: Pay online by card, net banking or UPI and keep the receipt.

  5. Submit and save: Download the final application and keep it for the interview stage.

Applications are most often rejected for wrong category selection, unreadable uploads, or qualification marks that fall short of the stated percentage. Check each against the notification before you pay.

Exam pattern

RDBS and Legal candidates go through three phases. Protocol and Security Service has a shorter route of an online test followed by an interview, as per the reference notification.

Phase I (Prelims)

Phase I is an online objective test of 200 questions and 200 marks in 120 minutes. It has eight sections: Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English, Computer Knowledge, Decision Making, General Awareness, Economic and Social Issues (ESI) and Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD). In the reference cycle, the first five were qualifying in nature, while General Awareness, ESI and ARD (100 marks together) decided shortlisting for Phase II.

Phase II (Mains)

Phase II carries 200 marks. Paper I is descriptive English (100 marks). Paper II tests ESI and ARD through an objective part and a descriptive part (50 marks each) for generalist candidates, while specialist candidates face stream-specific subject papers. Negative marking of one-fourth mark for each wrong objective answer applied in earlier cycles.

Phase III

The interview carries 50 marks and is preceded by a psychometric test. Full tables, timing and marking rules are on the NABARD Grade A exam pattern page.

What this means for you:

  • Rural focus matters most: ESI, ARD and General Awareness together make up half of Phase I and drive your Phase I merit.

  • Do not ignore qualifying sections: A weak score in Reasoning, English or Computer can end your attempt, however well you score elsewhere.

  • Writing is a skill: Half of Phase II is descriptive, so writing practice must begin early.

Older pages may still show previous patterns, so follow the latest notification.

Syllabus summary

The syllabus has a clear split. Phase I tests the general banking aptitude subjects plus the rural-economy subjects. Phase II goes deeper into ESI and ARD and adds essay, precis and letter writing.

Selection process

  1. Phase I (Prelims): An online qualifying test. Candidates are shortlisted in a category-wise ratio based on merit-section scores.

  2. Phase II (Mains): Objective and descriptive papers worth 200 marks. Performance here decides who is called for Phase III.

  3. Phase III: Psychometric test and a 50-mark interview.

  4. Final merit: The final select list is prepared from Phase II and interview marks, and the 2025-26 cut-offs were published out of 250 marks. The exact weightage and the role of the psychometric test should be confirmed in the notification.

  5. Document verification and medical examination: Selected candidates are verified before joining.

Salary and career growth

The pay scale published in the reference notification is Rs. 44,500 - 2,500 (4) - 54,500 - 2,850 (7) - 74,450 - 2,850 (4) - 85,850 - 3,300 (1) - 89,150 (17 years), with an efficiency bar in between. Starting basic pay is Rs. 44,500 per month. With dearness, housing and other allowances, gross monthly emoluments are reported at about Rs. 1,00,000 in the early years.

This is not an official in-hand figure, and it varies with the city of posting and the allowances you opt for. Assistant Managers are usually placed on probation and training before confirmation, and promotions follow to Manager (Grade B) and higher grades as per NABARD's service rules.

How to prepare

Start with the rural-economy subjects

Most graduates find ESI and ARD new. Read a standard source for each, then make short notes on schemes, institutions and data points. Add the Economic Survey and Union Budget highlights for ESI, and follow agriculture and rural policy news for ARD.

Build the aptitude base

Spend the first weeks on Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning and English fundamentals, since these sections are qualifying. Aim for steady accuracy rather than a high attempt count.

Add writing practice by the second month

Write one essay, one precis or one letter each week on topics such as agriculture finance, climate and farm policy. Ask a mentor or peer to review it.

Cut-off reference

NABARD publishes category-wise cut-offs after each phase. The table shows General (RDBS) cut-offs reported from the 2025-26 cycle, which are secondary-source figures to be verified at https://www.nabard.org.
