NCO Eligibility 2026-27: Classes, School Registration and Fee

NCO eligibility is decided by class and by school, not by age or marks. A student of Classes 1 to 10 who studies in a school registered with the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) can take the exam, and the school handles the entire registration. There is no entrance test, no minimum percentage and no separate application by the student.

This page explains who can appear in the 2026-27 session, how the school-based registration works, what the fee is, who gets a fee exemption, and what to do if your school has not registered. SOF's current official pages carry this exam as the International Computer Science Olympiad (ICSO), and the NCO name survives in older web addresses and in common usage, so the rules below come from those official pages.

Minimum marks

None; SOF sets no minimum marks for entry

Age limit

SOF does not publish a separate age limit; eligibility is by class

Individual registration

Not accepted; registration is only through the school

Single level; there is no Level 2 to qualify for

Language

Retaking

A student who appeared in a lower class earlier may appear again

Class Eligibility

SOF's current pages say the exam is open to students of Classes 1 to 10. A student sits the paper of the class in which they are studying, so a Class 6 student cannot choose the Class 8 paper or the reverse. Each class has its own syllabus and a paper that draws 60 percent from the current class and 40 percent from the previous one.

You may see other websites or older articles mention Classes 1 to 12 or a Level 2 round for this olympiad. SOF's current ICSO pages do not list Classes 11 and 12 and state that the exam has a single level. If your school circular says something different, ask the coordinator for the SOF registration form of the current session and read the class range printed on it.

Why the School Must Be Registered

SOF states that students should register through their respective schools only and that individual registrations are not accepted. The exam itself is conducted in the school during school hours, and SOF dispatches the question papers and conduct guidelines to the school coordinator.

The process works like this:

  1. School registration: The school coordinating teacher fills in the School Registration Form (SRF) and returns it to SOF. SOF states that there is no fee for a school to become a registered exam centre.

  2. Student list: The coordinator fills in the Students' Registration Sheet (SRS) with the participating students and sends it to SOF with the examination fee.

  3. Roll numbers: SOF registers the students and generates roll numbers for them.

  4. Question papers: SOF sends the papers and guidelines to the school before the chosen exam date.

A school with only a few interested students can still take part. SOF says that even schools with fewer than five interested students can enroll. A school that has not received any SOF material can send its name, address, email and the principal's contact details to SOF and request the forms.

Registration Timeline for 2026-27

Item

Details

Exam, Date 1

Thursday 24 September 2026 (this date has passed)

Exam, Date 2

Thursday 17 December 2026

Registration window

SOF accepts registrations up to 30 days before the chosen exam date

Indicative last date for Date 2

About 17 November 2026, counted from SOF's 30 day rule

Change of date

Not permitted once a school has chosen a date

The cut-off for Date 2 is our calculation from the 30 day rule and not a date printed by SOF. SOF's pages do not give a fixed registration end date for the session, so ask your school coordinator for the exact deadline the school has been given. Schools may send registrations all at once or separately for each exam.

Fee and Exemptions

Item

Details

Examination fee

Rs. 170 per student, inclusive of GST, paid to SOF by schools in India, Bhutan and Nepal

School charge

A school may charge up to Rs. 30 more per student for the coordinator's honorarium, teacher guidance and related costs

Centre registration

No fee for a school to become a registered exam centre

Exemption 1

Students with a major physical disability

Exemption 2

Indian students whose parent was martyred in defence operations

Schools in other countries

A fee in US dollars applies; confirm the amount with SOF

Some older pages and books quote a lower fee. SOF's registration fee page and ICSO pages currently show Rs. 170, so rely on that figure. The fee is paid by the school to SOF, and students pay the school, so keep the receipt the school gives you.

Retaking NCO and Appearing in Other Olympiads

SOF's FAQ says that a student who appeared in a lower class can appear again to improve their ranking and become eligible for certificates and prizes. In practice, a student takes the paper for each class they study in, so a child who took the exam in Class 5 can take it again in Class 6 and in later classes up to Class 10.

SOF also treats its olympiads as separate competitions. A student may register for more than one olympiad in a year, such as science, mathematics or English, as long as they meet the class eligibility of each. Fees are charged per olympiad. Before registering for several, check that the exam dates do not clash on the days your school has selected.

Common Reasons a Student Cannot Take Part

  • The school has not registered: Without a registered school there is no route for the student, because SOF does not accept individual registrations.

  • The 30 day window has passed: Registrations for a chosen date close 30 days before it, so a late request may only be possible for the next date or session.

  • Wrong class details: A student can sit only the paper of their own class. If the class on the registration sheet is wrong, ask the coordinator to correct it early.

  • Class outside the range: Students of Classes 11 and 12 are not listed in SOF's current computer olympiad pages.

  • Confusion with a similar olympiad: Other organisations run cyber or computer olympiads with similar names. A form from another body does not register a student for the SOF exam, so check the name of the conducting body on the form.

If You Have Missed This Session

If the registration window for your school's chosen date has closed, you still have options.

  • Ask about the other date: If your school has not yet fixed a date, the 17 December 2026 paper may still be open. The school must register before the 30 day limit.

  • Plan for the next session: Use the months before the next registration to finish the syllabus, since 40 percent of questions come from the previous class.

  • Practise now: Solve the official SOF sample paper for your class, and attempt online practice tests for NCO on Testkart to build speed and find weak areas well before the next exam.

Eligibility for Ranks and Awards

Taking part does not need any qualifying score, and every participant receives a participation certificate and a Student Progress Report. Rank-based awards depend on how a student performs in the single paper, and class topper medals depend on how many students from the school appear in that class. For example, SOF's awards page lists one class topper medal where 5 to 9 students appear in a class, three where 10 to 25 appear, and a percentage of rank holders above that. These are session-specific rules, so read the details on the NCO cut-off, rank and awards page.
