NVS Cut Off 2026: Tier 1 and Tier 2 Marks Explained
NVS cut-off marks decide who moves from one stage of the recruitment to the next. In the current cycle, Tier 1 shortlists candidates for Tier 2, and Tier 2 and the interview then decide the final merit for teaching posts. Results were released in phases from 17 August 2026, post by post.
This page explains how NVS cut-offs work, why you should be careful with the "expected cut-off" tables on other sites, and how to set a realistic target from your own mock test scores. We have not listed any cut-off figure here that we could not confirm from an official source.

How NVS Cut-Offs Work
Different stages use marks in different ways.
Tier 1: a screening stage out of 300 marks. Candidates are shortlisted for Tier 2 on the basis of their performance and category, and the marks are not added to final merit for teaching posts.
Tier 2: a paper out of 100 for PGT and TGT, which carries 85% of final merit. Candidates are called for the interview on the basis of their Tier 2 position within the post and category.
Final merit: 85% Tier 2 plus 15% interview. The last selected candidate in each post and category sets the effective cut-off.
Is There an Official Cut-Off?
The scorecard in the candidate login shows your marks and whether you were shortlisted. CBSE and NVS have not published a single, post-wise and category-wise cut-off table that we could verify, and the results came out in many phases. Tables labelled "expected cut-off" on other websites are estimates, and they often disagree with each other. Treat them as rough guesses and not as official figures. For the official position, check your candidate login and the notices at https://navodaya.gov.in/.
What Affects the Cut-Off
Number of vacancies: subjects with many seats, such as Physics or Mathematics at PGT level, behave differently from subjects with few seats.
Number of applicants: more candidates for a post push the last selected rank upward.
Paper difficulty and shift: a harder paper lowers raw scores across the board.
Category: each category has its own cut-off, so compare yourself with your own category and not the general one.
How to Set Your Target
Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Treat last year's figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them rather than a bare pass. Until you have a reliable benchmark, use your own mock scores to set checkpoints.
Stage | Maximum marks | How to benchmark yourself |
|---|---|---|
Tier 1 | 300 | Aim for steady accuracy of 80% or more on the questions you attempt, and a score that stays comfortable across five consecutive mocks |
Tier 2 objective | 60 | Track the score after negative marking, and raise it by revising the topics where you lose the most marks |
Tier 2 descriptive | 40 | Get your answers checked by a teacher or peer and compare them with a model structure |
