NVS Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Relaxation

NVS eligibility depends on the post you are applying for. A PGT needs a master's degree and a B.Ed., a TGT needs a bachelor's degree, a B.Ed. and a CTET Paper II pass, and clerical posts ask only for Class 12 and typing skills. The age limit also changes sharply from one post to another, from 27 years for clerical roles to 50 years for senior posts.

This page explains the eligibility conditions for the NVS recruitment cycle notified in November 2025, covering nationality, qualification, age limit, relaxations and the conditions that most often cause rejection. The tables are based on figures reported for this cycle, so each is marked as indicative. Always confirm your own post in the official notification before applying in the next cycle.

Nationality and Basic Conditions

Every post requires the candidate to meet a few basic conditions before qualification and age are checked.

  • Nationality: the candidate should be a citizen of India. The notification may allow some other categories of persons as per the rules, so read the clause for your post.

  • Language ability: teaching posts expect you to be able to teach in both English and Hindi.

  • Residential school suitability: Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are residential schools, so teachers are expected to take part in hostel and co-curricular duties.

  • Medical fitness: selected candidates go through a medical examination as per the rules of the organisation.

Educational Qualification

The qualification must come from a recognised university or institution, and the result should be available on or before the date stated in the notification. Marks and degree rules are applied post by post.

PGT qualification

A PGT candidate needs a master's degree in the relevant subject, with at least 50% marks in aggregate, and a B.Ed. degree or its equivalent. Reported conditions also mention a degree from a Regional Institute of Education of NCERT or an NCTE-recognised institution, and an integrated four-year degree route in some cases. Subject rules are specific: a Biology PGT, for example, is generally expected to have studied Botany and Zoology at the graduation level, and a Commerce PGT needs a master's degree in Commerce.

TGT qualification

A TGT candidate needs a bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks, a B.Ed. and a pass in the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) Paper II. CTET is treated as mandatory for TGT in this cycle, so a candidate without a valid CTET certificate is not eligible for TGT posts. The degree must include the subjects relevant to the post, as given below.

TGT subject

Subjects expected in the bachelor's degree (indicative)

English

English as an elective subject

Hindi

Hindi as an elective subject

Mathematics

Mathematics, with Physics and Chemistry as per the notification

Science

Botany, Zoology and Chemistry

Social Science

History with Geography, Economics or Political Science, or Geography with these subjects

Third Language

The relevant regional language studied for the period stated in the notification

Computer Science

A degree in Computer Science or Information Technology, or an equivalent course

Art, Music, Physical Education, Library

A degree or diploma in the relevant discipline as given in the notification

These subject conditions can differ in small ways between years, so read the clause for your own post line by line.

Principal and Assistant Commissioner

Principal posts need a master's degree, a B.Ed. and a stated period of teaching or administrative experience. Assistant Commissioner posts have their own qualification and experience conditions. For both, the notification lists the exact requirement and the date on which experience is counted.

Non-teaching posts

Junior Secretariat Assistant requires Class 12 and typing proficiency in English or Hindi. For Lab Attendant and Multi-Tasking Staff, the notification gives the qualification for each post. Skill test norms for clerical posts are also set in the notification.

NVS Age Limit

The upper age limit is counted on the date given in the notification, and relaxations are added only where the rules allow. The limits reported for this cycle are below.

Post

Upper age limit (indicative)

Assistant Commissioner

50 years

Principal

50 years (lower limit of 35 years reported)

PGT

40 years

TGT

35 years

Junior Secretariat Assistant

27 years

For the other non-teaching posts, check the exact limit in the notification. Age is calculated from your date of birth as shown in your matriculation certificate, so mismatches between the form and the certificate can lead to rejection.

Age Relaxation

Age relaxation follows central government rules and is usually allowed for the groups below. The figures are indicative and the notification is final.

Category

Upper age relaxation (indicative)

OBC (non-creamy layer)

3 years

SC and ST

5 years

Persons with benchmark disabilities

10 years, with additional years for reserved categories as per the rules

Ex-servicemen

As per central government rules

Serving government employees

As per the rules stated in the notification

Relaxations are not added together. Where a candidate belongs to more than one eligible group, the single highest relaxation is usually applied. Women candidates for some teaching posts were reported to receive a relaxation, so check whether your post allows it.

Reservation Categories

Vacancies are divided among Unreserved, EWS, OBC (non-creamy layer), SC and ST categories, with horizontal reservation for persons with benchmark disabilities and ex-servicemen as per the rules. Your category decides both the age relaxation and the seat pool you compete in. The category-wise break-up reported for the 1,513 PGT posts is given below as an example of how seats are spread.

Category

PGT vacancies (indicative)

Unreserved

634

EWS

146

OBC (non-creamy layer)

403

SC

222

ST

108

Total

1,513

A category certificate must be in the prescribed format and valid on the date stated in the notification. An OBC certificate without a non-creamy layer declaration, or one issued after the cut-off date, is a common reason for a candidate being treated as unreserved.

Experience and Other Requirements

  • CTET Paper II for TGT: a valid pass certificate is needed. Keep the certificate and roll number ready.

  • Experience for senior posts: Principal and Assistant Commissioner candidates must show experience in the range and format stated in the notification, with proof from the employer.

  • Subject match: your degree subjects must match the post you choose. A mismatch can lead to rejection at verification even if you clear the written exam.

  • Computer knowledge: basic computer skills are tested in Tier 1 and are needed in a modern school, so they are expected of every candidate.

Who May Not Be Eligible

  • Candidates without a B.Ed.: the B.Ed. or an equivalent teacher training degree is mandatory for PGT and TGT unless the notification allows a specific alternative.

  • TGT candidates without CTET Paper II: without a valid certificate, the application can be rejected at verification.

  • Candidates below the marks requirement: the 50% condition is applied on the stated basis, so a lower aggregate can make a candidate ineligible.

  • Candidates above the age limit: unless a category relaxation applies, anyone older than the limit on the reference date cannot apply.

  • Candidates with a result still pending: if the final result of the qualifying degree is not out by the date given, eligibility may not be accepted.

Points That Often Cause Confusion

  • Marks in CGPA or grades: if your university awards grades, check how the notification wants the 50% condition proved. Keep the university's conversion rule or certificate ready.

  • Degree names that differ: titles such as Applied Physics or Business Economics may not match the subject named in the notification. Match the exact wording before you pick the post, and do not assume equivalence.

  • Final-year students: eligibility is judged on the date given in the notification, so a result that comes after that date may not be accepted.

  • Name and date of birth mismatches: the name on certificates, CTET score card and application form should match. If they do not, keep a gazette notification or affidavit as proof.

  • Choosing more than one post: if you qualify for both PGT and TGT, check whether the notification lets you apply for both and how the fee and papers are handled.

Documents to Keep Ready

Verification takes place at the interview or document check stage. Keep the following ready, along with self-attested copies.

  • Proof of date of birth and identity.

  • Mark sheets and certificates of all qualifications, including B.Ed. and CTET.

  • Category certificate (SC, ST, OBC non-creamy layer, EWS or disability) in the prescribed format.

  • Experience certificates for Principal and similar posts.

  • No objection certificate for serving government or public sector employees.

Application Fee in Brief

In this cycle the examination fee depended on the post, with a separate processing fee. The amounts reported were Rs. 2,300 for Assistant Commissioner and Principal, Rs. 1,500 for PGT, TGT and similar posts, and Rs. 1,200 for clerical and support posts, each with a Rs. 500 processing fee. SC, ST, persons with benchmark disabilities and ex-servicemen were reported to be exempt from the examination fee. These amounts are indicative, so check the notification.

Regional Contractual Posts Have Different Rules

NVS regional offices also invite applications for contractual teachers for one academic year. Their eligibility differs from the regular cycle. For example, reported notices mention an upper age limit of 50 years for fresh candidates and a higher limit for retired teachers, and CTET is listed as desirable rather than mandatory for TGT in some notices. These rules are set region by region, so read the specific notice on the official website.

How to Check Your Eligibility Before Applying

  1. Pick the post: choose the post and subject that match your degree, not the one with the most vacancies.

  2. Read the clause: find the qualification clause for that post in the notification and match your marks, subjects and degree names.

  3. Calculate your age: count your age on the reference date and add the relaxation you are entitled to.

  4. Check certificates: make sure B.Ed., CTET and category certificates are valid and available.

  5. Plan the preparation: once you know the post, study its exam pattern and syllabus.
