NIACL AO Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Degree and Conditions

NIACL AO eligibility rests on four things: your nationality, your degree and percentage, your age on the reference date in the advertisement, and a few conditions about documents and service. Getting any one of them wrong can cost you the attempt after you have already paid the fee, so it pays to check each rule before you register.

The rules below come from the official advertisement of the 2025 recruitment (550 Administrative Officer posts, Scale I), the latest notified cycle. Rules such as the percentage and the application structure tend to repeat across cycles, but the reference date and the age window change every year. Treat the dates here as examples and confirm them in the next advertisement.

Nationality Requirements

To apply, you must be one of the following. Candidates in the second to fifth groups must hold a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India.

  • Citizen of India.

  • Subject of Nepal.

  • Subject of Bhutan.

  • Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of settling permanently.

  • Person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam to settle permanently in India.

Educational Qualification

For Generalist posts, you need a graduate or post-graduate degree in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government. You must have at least 60% marks in either your graduation or post-graduation. The requirement is 55% for SC, ST and PwBD candidates.

How the percentage is counted

  • Aggregate marks: The percentage is the total marks you obtained across all years or semesters divided by the maximum marks, irrespective of honours or optional subjects.

  • No rounding up: Fractions are dropped, so 59.99% counts as below 60%.

  • CGPA or OGPA: If your university awards only grades, you need a certificate from the university or college stating the conversion formula and the equivalent percentage.

  • Integrated dual degrees: The date of passing the final degree must be on or before the reference date.

Result deadline

Your result must have been declared on or before 1 August 2025 in the latest cycle, and you must hold a valid mark sheet or degree certificate dated on or before that day. Proof from the board or university is checked at the interview. In practice, this means final-year students who were waiting for results on that date were not eligible. Always check this date, because it moves with each advertisement.

Qualifications for Specialist Posts

Specialist posts need a general degree plus a discipline-specific qualification. The minimum marks stay at 60% (55% for SC, ST and PwBD) unless the advertisement says otherwise. The table summarises the 2025 requirements.

Discipline

Required qualification (2025 cycle)

Risk Engineers

Engineering degree (graduation or post-graduation) in any discipline

Automobile Engineers

B.E., B.Tech, M.E. or M.Tech in Automobile Engineering, or an engineering graduate in any branch with a diploma of at least one year in Automobile Engineering

Legal Specialists

Graduation or post-graduation in Law

Accounts Specialists

CA from ICAI or CMA from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India, along with a graduation or post-graduation in any discipline; or an MBA in Finance, PGDM in Finance or M.Com

MBBS, MD or MS; or BDS or MDS; or BAMS or BHMS, with valid registration from the relevant council

IT Specialists

B.E., B.Tech, M.E. or M.Tech in IT or Computer Science, or MCA

Actuarial Specialists

A graduation or post-graduation in any discipline, at least four actuarial papers from IAI or IFoA including CM1 and excluding CB3, and active membership of IAI or IFoA

For AO (Health), Ayurveda candidates need NCISM registration and Homeopathy candidates need NCH registration, while other medical candidates need registration with the Medical Council, the Dental Council or a State council. Read the exact wording in the advertisement before applying, because degree names and equivalence rules matter for specialist posts.

Age Limit and Relaxation

In the 2025 cycle, the age limit was 21 to 30 years as on 1 August 2025. That meant you had to be born between 2 August 1995 and 1 August 2004, both dates included. The age is counted on the reference date, not on the date you apply or the date of the exam.

Category

SC and ST

Defence personnel disabled in operations

Confirmed employees of public sector general insurers

The dates in the last column are simple calculations from the reference date for a single relaxation. Several points from the advertisement apply to them.

  • Cumulative relaxation: If you qualify for more than one relaxation, they add up, up to a maximum age of 45 years.

  • PwBD and insurance employees: A person who is both gets the more beneficial of the two concessions, not both.

  • Ex-servicemen: Commissioned officers, ECOs and SSCOs with at least five years of military service qualify under defined release conditions. There is no reservation for ex-servicemen in the Officers' cadre.

  • Proof: Relaxation needs certificates, and you must produce the originals for verification.

Category and Disability Conditions

Reservation and fee concessions depend on certificates that must be in the right format and issued in the right period. Mistakes here can cost you the interview even after you clear the exam.

SC, ST and OBC

SC and ST candidates need a caste certificate in the prescribed format from a competent authority, and a caste validity certificate where applicable. OBC candidates need a certificate that carries the non-creamy layer clause, based on income for FY 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 and issued after 31 March 2025 in the latest cycle. The caste name must match the Central list exactly. Creamy layer OBC candidates must apply as UR and get no OBC age relaxation.

EWS

EWS candidates need an Income and Asset Certificate showing family income below Rs. 8 lakh for FY 2024-25, issued after 31 March 2025 and before the application date. The advertisement lists property limits that exclude a candidate, such as five or more acres of agricultural land or a residential flat of 1,000 sq ft or more. Without the certificate at the interview, a candidate cannot attend.

PwBD

The post is open to blindness and low vision, deaf and hard of hearing, locomotor disability, autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, mental illness and multiple disabilities. PwBD candidates need a disability certificate and UDID card from the District-level Medical Board. Scribe and extra time rules apply, and a scribe request must be made in the online application.

Other Conditions Before You Apply

  • One discipline only: You can apply for just one discipline. Multiple applications invalidate all of them.

  • Medical fitness: Appointment depends on medical fitness and on verification of your documents.

  • Employer permission: Candidates working in government, quasi-government, public sector or banking institutions need a no-objection certificate, and selected candidates need a relieving letter to join.

  • Service bond: Selected officers sign a guarantee bond for four years of service including probation, with liquidated damages for leaving early.

  • Posting: You may be posted anywhere in India, and the minimum stay at the first posting is five years.

  • Probation: One year, extendable, with the Non-Life Licentiate Examination of the Insurance Institute of India required for confirmation.

Read the bond and posting rules before applying, because they apply to every selected candidate and cannot be negotiated afterward. The advertisement text reviewed for this page does not state a limit on the number of attempts, so look for any attempt rule in the next notice.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Candidates below 60% (or 55%): Even a very small shortfall after the aggregate calculation means you are not eligible.

  • Candidates without a declared result on the reference date: A degree whose result was announced later does not count for that cycle.

  • Candidates outside the age window: Being a day too old or too young on the reference date is enough to reject the application.

  • Creamy layer OBC applicants claiming OBC benefits: They must apply as UR.

  • Applicants with more than one application: All applications become invalid.

  • Specialist applicants without the right qualification or registration: For example, a doctor without valid council registration cannot apply for AO (Health).

Check Your Eligibility in Five Steps

  1. Fix the reference date: Note the date in the advertisement that applies to age and to the result. In 2025 it was 1 August.

  2. Calculate your percentage: Add up all marks across every year or semester, divide by the total maximum marks, and drop the fraction. Do this for graduation and, if you have it, post-graduation, and use whichever is higher.

  3. Count your age: Work out whether your date of birth falls inside the window for your category, using the table above.

  4. Match the discipline: For a specialist post, compare your degree name, institute and registration word for word with the advertisement.

  5. Collect certificates early: Category certificates must be issued in the right period and format, so apply for fresh ones well before the registration window opens.

A short example shows why step 2 matters. A graduate with 59.8% on the aggregate calculation is below the 60% requirement for the general category, even if the university rounds the result to 60% on the mark sheet. The company applies its own rule, so check the arithmetic yourself instead of relying on the printed percentage.

Documents to Keep Ready

You will upload a photograph, signature, left thumb impression and a handwritten declaration at the time of applying. At the interview, you carry the originals and self-attested copies of your documents.

Document group

Examples

Identity and age

Photo ID such as PAN or Aadhaar, and a birth certificate or Std X certificate showing date of birth

Education

Mark sheets and certificates for Std X, Std XII, graduation and post-graduation, with proof of result declaration date and a CGPA conversion certificate if needed

Category and disability

Caste, OBC non-creamy layer, EWS, disability certificate and UDID card as applicable

Experience and employment

Experience certificates and no-objection certificate from the current employer

Specialist proof

Professional registrations for AO (Health), and institute memberships for relevant disciplines

Name differences between certificates and the application cause delays, so make sure your name matches across all documents. Once you know you are eligible, build your preparation around the real exam.
