NICL AO Eligibility Criteria 2026: Age, Degree, Marks

The NICL AO eligibility criteria 2026 decide whether your application is accepted before any exam is attempted. National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) set them in its advertisement dated 7 October 2026 for 321 Administrative Officer (Scale I) posts: 200 Generalist and 121 Specialist. Online registration runs from 8 to 28 October 2026, so the window to check your eligibility and apply is short.

This page explains who can apply, which degree each discipline needs, the minimum marks, the age limit and relaxation, nationality, the application fee and the mistakes that get applications rejected. Figures follow the advertisement; the notice on the official NICL website is the final word, so read it once before you pay the fee.

Choosing between Generalist and Specialist

A candidate who qualifies for a Specialist stream can usually also apply as a Generalist, because the Generalist stream asks only for a degree. The choice then depends on competition and your preparation. Generalist has 200 posts but draws the largest pool of applicants, and its Phase I cut-offs have been far higher than those of Specialist streams. Specialist posts have fewer applicants but add a 50-question Professional Knowledge test in Phase II.

Streams that changed this year

Doctor (MBBS) and Actuarial posts from earlier cycles are not part of the 2026 recruitment. Risk Engineers (28 posts), Company Secretaries (2 posts) and Agriculture (20 posts) are new. If an older article lists Doctor or Actuarial eligibility, it is out of date.

Minimum Marks Required

Marks are checked in the degree that qualifies you for the post. The advertisement sets the minimum at 60 percent aggregate for most candidates and 55 percent for SC, ST and PwBD candidates.

  • No rounding up: A score of 59.99 percent is below 60 percent. Do not round it off in the form.

  • Result date matters: The result must be declared on or before 1 October 2026. Final-year students whose results come later are not eligible in this cycle.

  • Use the university's method: Where a university gives grades or CGPA, use its official conversion formula and keep the certificate that states the equivalent percentage.

  • Professional courses: For CA, CMA and CS, the professional qualification is the discipline requirement. The percentage condition applies to the graduation or post-graduation the advertisement names alongside it, so check the exact wording for your stream.

Age Limit and Age Relaxation

The age limit is 21 to 30 years as on 1 October 2026. That means your date of birth must fall between 2 October 1996 and 1 October 2005, both dates inclusive. Upper age relaxation applies by category, but the total relaxation cannot take the upper age beyond 45 years.

Category

Upper age relaxation

SC and ST

5 years

OBC (non-creamy layer)

3 years

PwBD (General and EWS)

10 years

PwBD (SC and ST)

15 years

PwBD (OBC)

13 years

Ex-servicemen (subject to qualifying criteria)

5 years

Defence personnel disabled in operations

3 years

Confirmed employees of public sector general insurance companies

8 years

Relaxation is not added across categories unless the advertisement says so. An OBC candidate with a disability, for example, gets the PwBD (OBC) figure of 13 years, not 3 plus 10. OBC candidates need a non-creamy layer certificate that is valid as per the format and date requirement in the advertisement; a creamy-layer candidate is treated as unreserved.

How to Calculate Your Age

Age is calculated on one fixed date, so birthdays after 1 October 2026 do not matter. Use the date of birth printed on your Class 10 or equivalent certificate, since a mismatch with other documents can cause trouble at verification.

Example

Date of birth

Eligible without relaxation?

Candidate A

15 March 1998

Yes, aged 28 on 1 October 2026

Candidate B

1 October 2005

Yes, exactly 21 on the cut-off date

Candidate C

2 October 2005

No, not yet 21 on 1 October 2026

Candidate D

2 October 1996

Yes, still 30 on the cut-off date

Candidate E

1 October 1996

No for the General category, as the candidate has turned 31; eligible only with category relaxation

Candidate E's row shows why the exact boundary matters: a birth date one day too early falls outside the General category limit, although a category that gets relaxation could still be eligible.

Nationality and Other Conditions

The advertisement allows the following candidates to apply:

  • Citizens of India.

  • Subjects of Nepal and Bhutan.

  • Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of settling permanently.

  • Certain persons of Indian origin who have migrated from specified countries with the intention of settling in India, on the terms stated in the advertisement.

Candidates in the last three groups may need an eligibility certificate from the Government of India. Check the advertisement for the exact list of countries and the certificate requirement.

Medical fitness and conduct

Appointment is subject to the candidate being found medically fit and to verification of documents. Candidates should also be free of anything that would disqualify them under the company's service and conduct rules. Medical standards are not tested at the application stage, but a selected candidate who fails them can lose the post.

Service bond and posting

Selected officers sign a four-year minimum service bond including probation, and can be posted anywhere in India. If you cannot accept a transferable job or the bond terms, read them in the overview page's salary and bond section before applying.

Reserved categories and certificates

Posts are spread across UR, OBC, SC, ST and EWS categories, and posts for persons with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) are carved out of these totals, as the advertisement explains. A category claim is only as good as the certificate behind it, so check these points:

  • OBC: The non-creamy layer certificate must be in the prescribed format and of the validity the advertisement requires. Without it you are treated as unreserved.

  • EWS: Keep the income and asset certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed format.

  • SC and ST: The caste certificate must come from the competent authority and name your community as listed for your state.

  • PwBD: A disability certificate showing at least the benchmark percentage; the sub-category (for example visual, hearing or locomotor) decides which posts you can claim.

The category you select at registration is carried into the Phase I shortlist, which is prepared discipline-wise and category-wise, so a mistaken claim can cost you your place later.

One Application, One Discipline

You can apply for only one discipline. Applying for more than one makes every application invalid, and the fee is not refunded. Choose carefully, because the discipline cannot be changed after submission.

  • Generalist and Specialist are different disciplines. You cannot hold one application in each.

  • A second registration is a duplicate. If you made a mistake, do not register again; use only the correction facility if the advertisement offers one.

  • Specialists answer a different paper. The Professional Knowledge test exists only for Specialist streams.

Application Fee

Category

Fee

SC, ST and PwBD

Rs. 250 (intimation charges, inclusive of GST)

All other candidates

Rs. 1,000 (application fee and intimation charges, inclusive of GST)

Payment is online only, through debit card, credit card, net banking or similar modes on the payment page. The fee is non-refundable and bank charges are borne by the candidate. The application is complete only after the fee is paid and the form is submitted by 28 October 2026.

Documents and Details to Keep Ready

Keep scanned copies ready before you open the form. Exact size and format limits are in the advertisement.

  • Recent passport-size photograph.

  • Signature in running handwriting, not in capital letters.

  • Left thumb impression.

  • Handwritten declaration, written by you and not typed.

  • Date-of-birth proof, normally the Class 10 certificate.

  • Degree certificates and mark sheets for the qualifying degree, plus professional certificates for Finance and Company Secretary streams.

  • Category certificate (SC, ST, OBC non-creamy layer, EWS) or disability certificate, in the prescribed format.

  • A working email address and mobile number, since call letters and updates are sent there.

Common Reasons for Rejection

  • Percentage below the limit: 59.99 percent in place of 60 percent.

  • Wrong discipline: A degree that does not match the Specialist stream chosen.

  • Signature in capitals or typed declaration: Both are named in the advertisement as grounds for rejection.

  • Uploads outside the size limit: Large or blurred files fail the check.

  • More than one application: Applying in two disciplines cancels both.

  • Result not declared by 1 October 2026: A provisional pass letter or an expected result does not count.

  • Age miscalculated: Relaxation claimed without a valid certificate.

Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply

  1. Confirm your date of birth falls between 2 October 1996 and 1 October 2005, or that you qualify for relaxation.

  2. Check your qualifying degree against the table for your discipline.

  3. Verify the marks percentage against the 60 or 55 percent limit, without rounding.

  4. Confirm your result was declared on or before 1 October 2026.

  5. Pick one discipline and be sure about it.

  6. Keep category and disability certificates in the correct format.

  7. Prepare photograph, signature, thumb impression and handwritten declaration.

  8. Pay the fee and submit before 28 October 2026, and save the receipt.

Once you are sure you are eligible, move to preparation. Phase I is on 17 November 2026 and Phase II on 22 December 2026, so the weeks after registration matter.
