NICL AO Syllabus : Phase I, Phase II and Descriptive Topics
The NICL AO syllabus 2026 covers three sections in the Phase I online exam (English Language, Reasoning Ability and Quantitative Aptitude) and five or six sections in Phase II, where General Awareness, Computer Knowledge and, for Specialists, Professional Knowledge join the three Phase I subjects. Phase II also has a 30-mark Descriptive Test in English. National Insurance Company Limited names these tests in its advertisement dated 7 October 2026 but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus.
The topic lists on this page are therefore built from the official test names, the questions asked in the 2024 and 2025 NICL AO papers and the standard pattern of public sector insurance officer exams. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list. Where a topic carries more weight than others, the page says so, and the final section turns the checklist into a week-by-week plan for the Phase I exam on 17 November 2026 and Phase II on 22 December 2026.

Key Changes to Know
The syllabus has not changed since 2024: The 2024, 2025 and 2026 advertisements name the same tests with the same marks and timing, so previous year papers from both cycles are valid practice.
The Specialist disciplines have changed: Doctor (MBBS) and Actuarial posts, which some older syllabus pages still list, are not part of the 2026 recruitment. Risk Engineers, Company Secretaries and Agriculture are new, so their Professional Knowledge test has no NICL previous year paper to study from.
Insurance awareness sits inside General Awareness: NICL lists the test simply as General Awareness, but the paper regularly includes questions on insurance terms, IRDAI and public sector insurers. Treat insurance awareness as a compulsory sub-topic.
Computer Knowledge is a separate 50-mark or 40-mark test: It is not folded into General Awareness as in some bank exams, which makes it one of the highest-return sections in Phase II.
Older pages may still show Doctor or Actuarial posts or a different Specialist list, so follow the advertisement in the Recruitment section of the official website: https://nationalinsurance.nic.co.in.
NICL AO Phase I Syllabus
Phase I is a speed test: 100 questions in 60 minutes, with 20 minutes locked to each section. The topics are those of a standard officer-level preliminary exam, but the short sectional timer rewards candidates who have fixed their approach to each question type in advance.
Section | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
English Language (30 marks) | Reading comprehension (one or two passages), cloze test, error spotting, sentence improvement, para jumbles, single and double fillers, phrase replacement, word usage and vocabulary, spelling | Reading comprehension and error spotting: together they usually account for more than half the section |
Reasoning Ability (35 marks) | Seating arrangement (linear and circular), floor and box puzzles, scheduling puzzles, syllogism, inequality, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction and distance, order and ranking, alphanumeric and number series, data sufficiency | Puzzles and seating arrangement, since 15 to 20 of the 35 questions are typically puzzle-based |
Quantitative Aptitude (35 marks) | Data interpretation (table, bar, line, pie, caselet), simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations, arithmetic word problems (percentage, profit and loss, ratio, averages, simple and compound interest, time and work, speed and distance, mixtures, mensuration), data sufficiency | Simplification, number series and quadratic equations: these are the fastest marks and build time for data interpretation |
Within the 20-minute limit, the high-weight topics decide your score. In Reasoning, two or three puzzle sets make up the bulk of the paper, and attempting the easier two in full is worth more than touching all three. In Quantitative Aptitude, two data interpretation sets of five questions each are usual, and the arithmetic word problems fill the rest. In English, one reading comprehension passage of 8 to 10 questions is standard. Sectional tests on Testkart with the 20-minute limit are a practical way to find which of these question types you can finish in time.
NICL AO Phase II Syllabus
Phase II repeats the three Phase I subjects at a higher level and adds General Awareness and Computer Knowledge. Generalists face 50 questions per section; Specialists face 40 per section plus Professional Knowledge. The topic lists below apply to both streams.
Reasoning
Advanced puzzles: Multi-variable seating and floor puzzles, month and date scheduling, box arrangements with conditions, and puzzles combining blood relations or directions.
Logical reasoning: Statement and assumption, statement and conclusion, course of action, cause and effect, strengthening and weakening arguments.
Standard topics at higher difficulty: Syllogism (including reverse syllogism), coded inequality, coded direction, input-output machine, data sufficiency with two or three statements.
English Language
Reading comprehension: Two passages, usually one on economy or business and one on a social or general theme, with inference and vocabulary-in-context questions.
Grammar and usage: Error spotting across longer sentences, sentence correction, phrase replacement, match the columns, sentence connectors.
Vocabulary and structure: Cloze test, double fillers, para jumbles, odd sentence out, word swap and word rearrangement.
Quantitative Aptitude
Data interpretation: Three or four sets including caselets, missing-data tables and mixed charts, often with arithmetic built into the questions.
Arithmetic: The same chapters as Phase I at higher difficulty, with multi-step word problems on partnership, probability, permutation and combination, boats and streams, pipes and cisterns.
Calculation topics: Approximation, number series (wrong number and missing number), quadratic and quantity comparison questions, data sufficiency.
General Awareness
Area | What to cover |
|---|---|
Current affairs | National and international events of roughly the six months before the exam: appointments, awards, summits, sports, reports and indices, books and authors, important days |
Insurance awareness | Insurance terms (premium, underwriting, reinsurance, claim, deductible, no-claim bonus), types of general insurance, IRDAI and its regulations, public sector general insurers and their history, recent developments in Indian insurance, government insurance schemes |
Financial awareness | RBI policy and rates, Union Budget and Economic Survey highlights, banking and financial terms, financial institutions and regulators, recent mergers and policy changes |
Static general knowledge | Indian polity basics, geography, headquarters of organisations, national parks, dams, currencies and capitals, abbreviations |
Computer Knowledge
Fundamentals: Generations of computers, hardware components, input and output devices, memory types and storage units, number systems.
Software and systems: Operating systems and their functions, types of software, file management, programming language basics.
Office tools: MS Word, MS Excel (formulas, functions, charts) and MS PowerPoint, with keyboard shortcuts.
Networking and the internet: Network types and topologies, internet terminology, email, protocols, cloud basics.
Security and databases: Viruses and malware, firewalls, encryption basics, DBMS concepts, common abbreviations.
Professional Knowledge Syllabus for Specialists
NICL does not publish a Professional Knowledge syllabus for any discipline. The test has 50 questions in 35 minutes, and in previous cycles the questions matched the core subjects of the qualifying degree or professional course. The table below lists the areas candidates in each 2026 discipline should revise. Treat it as indicative.
Discipline | Indicative areas to revise |
|---|---|
Finance (CA and CMA) | Financial accounting and accounting standards, cost and management accounting, corporate finance, auditing, direct and indirect taxation, financial management, insurance accounting basics |
Legal | Indian Contract Act, Insurance Act and IRDAI framework, Motor Vehicles Act (third-party liability), Consumer Protection Act, Transfer of Property Act, Companies Act, civil and criminal procedure basics, law of torts, constitutional law |
Information Technology | Data structures and algorithms, DBMS and SQL, operating systems, computer networks, software engineering, cyber security, web technologies, object-oriented programming |
Automobile Engineers | Automobile engineering fundamentals, IC engines, vehicle dynamics, transmission and braking systems, vehicle body and chassis, automotive electricals, maintenance and repair estimation, motor insurance surveying concepts |
Risk Engineers | Core engineering subjects of the candidate's branch (mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical and others), fire and industrial safety, engineering materials, project and plant risk assessment, loss prevention |
Company Secretaries | Companies Act and secretarial practice, corporate governance, SEBI regulations, securities laws, drafting and compliance, meetings and board procedures |
Agriculture | Agronomy, soil science, horticulture, plant pathology and entomology, agricultural economics, crop insurance schemes, agricultural engineering basics, animal husbandry fundamentals |
Risk Engineers, Company Secretaries and Agriculture are new disciplines for NICL, so there is no NICL previous year paper for them. Candidates in these streams can look at the specialist papers of other public sector insurers and at the Professional Knowledge papers of banking specialist officer exams for the question style.
Descriptive Test Syllabus
Component | Marks | What to expect | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|---|
Essay | 10 | A choice of topics on the economy, insurance, social issues, technology or governance, in about 200 to 250 words | Write two essays a week on current themes; practise a three-part structure of introduction, argument and conclusion |
Precis | 10 | A passage of 250 to 350 words to be condensed to about one-third of its length in your own words | Practise picking the main idea of each paragraph and cutting examples and repetition |
Comprehension | 10 | A passage followed by short-answer questions that test understanding and summarising | Answer in complete sentences, in your own words, within the word limit given |
The Descriptive Test is typed on the computer, lasts 30 minutes and is qualifying only. It is evaluated only for candidates who clear the objective cut-offs, and its marks are not added to the merit score. Typing speed matters: practise writing all three answers within 30 minutes on a keyboard, not on paper.
Overlap Between Phase I and Phase II
Area | Phase I | Phase II | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | 35 questions, moderate puzzles | 50 or 40 questions, harder puzzles plus logical reasoning | Learn every puzzle type once; add logical reasoning after Phase I |
English | 30 questions, one passage | 50 or 40 questions, two passages, plus the Descriptive Test | Daily reading serves both; begin essay and precis practice in parallel |
Quantitative Aptitude | 35 questions, two data interpretation sets | 50 or 40 questions, three or four sets with caselets | Arithmetic chapters are common; add caselets and probability later |
General Awareness | Not tested | 50 or 40 questions | Start current affairs now; six months of notes cannot be built in the five weeks between phases |
Computer Knowledge | Not tested | 50 or 40 questions | A two-week revision block after Phase I is enough if basics are known |
Professional Knowledge | Not tested | 50 questions (Specialists) | Revise degree fundamentals in short daily slots from the start |
Is There an Interview Syllabus?
No. NICL publishes no syllabus for the Interview, which carries 20 percent weightage in the final merit list. In past cycles, questions covered the candidate's academic background, the insurance sector, the role of an Administrative Officer, current affairs and, for Specialists, their discipline. Reading the annual report of National Insurance and following IRDAI announcements in the weeks before the Interview is the most practical preparation.
How to Cover the NICL AO Syllabus
With Phase I on 17 November 2026 and Phase II on 22 December 2026, the gap between the two stages is only five weeks. The plan below starts from the application window and assumes about four to five hours of study a day.
Weeks 1 to 2 (to early November): Cover every Phase I topic once. Finish arithmetic chapters and two data interpretation sets a day, one puzzle type a day, and one reading comprehension passage plus a grammar topic a day. Begin 30 minutes of current affairs daily and keep monthly notes.
Weeks 3 to 4 (to 15 November): Switch to timed sectional tests of 20 minutes each, then full-length Phase I mocks every second day. Analyse each mock the same day and keep an error log by question type. Keep current affairs and ten minutes of Computer Knowledge revision going.
Week 5 (Phase I week): Revise the error log, attempt two light mocks and stop learning new topics. After the exam, move straight to Phase II without waiting for the result.
Weeks 6 to 8 (to mid-December): Complete Computer Knowledge, consolidate six months of current affairs and insurance awareness, add Phase II reasoning and quantitative topics, and write one essay or precis every two days. Specialists give an hour a day to Professional Knowledge.
Final week before 22 December: Full-length Phase II mocks with the 180-minute sectional timings, same-day analysis, and a last pass through the error log and current affairs notes.
