Pharmacy Entrance

National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Joint Entrance Examination

NIPER JEE is the national-level entrance test for postgraduate and doctoral admissions at the seven National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs). It leads to M.S. (Pharm), M.Pharm, M.Tech (Pharm), MBA (Pharm) and PhD seats. One NIPER conducts the test on behalf of all seven, and the organising institute changes from cycle to cycle. The 2026 cycle (admissions for 2026-27) was organised by NIPER Mohali (S.A.S. Nagar), and the computer-based test was held on 13 June 2026.

This page gives you the whole picture in one place: dates, eligibility, fee, pattern, syllabus, selection, seats and a preparation plan. Details are drawn from the cycle that has just finished, because the 2027 brochure has not been released yet. Anything that may change next year is labelled, so you can plan early and still check the official portal before you apply.

2026 Cycle and What to Expect for 2027

The 2026 notification opened applications on 16 April 2026. The test followed on 13 June 2026, the result was declared in the third week of June, and counselling for the master's programmes ran in several online phases from July 2026.

As of 27 October 2026, no official notice for the 2027 cycle is available. If NIPER follows its recent timeline, the notification and registration usually open in April, the test falls in June and counselling begins in July. Treat this only as a planning guide. The host NIPER, the pattern and the dates for 2027 will be known only when the new brochure is published.

Older pages may still show the earlier pattern of 200 marks, one mark per question and a quarter-mark penalty. Follow the current official brochure when it appears.

Programmes and Participating NIPERs

Seven institutes admit students through the common NIPER JEE rank list: Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Hajipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Raebareli and Mohali (S.A.S. Nagar). Not every programme is offered at every campus, so check the seat matrix before choosing your preferences.

Programme

Typical entry degree

Who it suits

M.S. (Pharm)

B.Pharm or related degree

Research-oriented students in pharmaceutical sciences

M.Pharm

B.Pharm

Students targeting specialisations such as pharmaceutics or analysis

M.Tech (Pharm)

B.Pharm or relevant engineering and technology degree

Students interested in process, devices or technology

MBA (Pharm)

Relevant bachelor's degree

Students planning pharma management careers

PhD

Relevant master's degree

Candidates aiming for research and academia

Choose the programme by the career you want, not only by the rank you expect. A research-heavy M.S. (Pharm) suits future PhD plans, while MBA (Pharm) adds a group discussion and interview stage that needs separate preparation.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational qualification

Candidates need a relevant bachelor's degree for master's programmes and a relevant master's degree for PhD. The minimum marks reported for the 2026 cycle are 60 percent or 6.75 CGPA for General and OBC candidates, 55 percent or 6.25 CGPA for SC and ST candidates, and 50 percent or 5.75 CGPA for PwBD candidates.

GPAT, GATE or NET score

For M.S. (Pharm), M.Pharm and M.Tech (Pharm), a valid GPAT, GATE or NET score is generally required. Exemptions have been reported for some groups, such as B.V.Sc., MBBS, BAMS and BDS degree holders, foreign nationals, NRI candidates and sponsored candidates. Confirm your category in the brochure.

Final-year students and age

Final-year students may apply if they complete the degree before the date fixed in the brochure; for 2026 this was 31 July 2026. The summaries we reviewed do not report an upper age limit, but check the brochure for the exact rule. The full breakdown is on the NIPER JEE eligibility page.

Application Fee and How to Apply

Programme

General, OBC, EWS, PwBD

SC and ST

Master's programmes

Rs. 4,000

Rs. 2,000

PhD

Rs. 5,000

Rs. 2,500

These are 2026 figures. The fee is non-refundable and bank charges are extra. Fees can change, so verify them in the new brochure.

  1. Register: Open the official cycle page and create an account with a valid email address and mobile number.

  2. Fill in details: Enter personal and academic details, programme choices and, where asked, your test city preferences.

  3. Upload documents: Add your photograph, signature and the certificates listed in the brochure, within the stated file sizes.

  4. Pay online: Pay the fee through the available digital modes and keep the receipt.

  5. Submit and save: Review everything before final submission, then download a copy of the form.

Documents to keep ready

  • Identity and date of birth: A government photo ID and the Class 10 certificate.

  • Academic records: Degree marksheets, and the GPAT, GATE or NET scorecard where it applies.

  • Category papers: Caste, EWS or PwBD certificates in the prescribed format, if you claim a benefit.

Common reasons for trouble are a wrong category choice, unreadable uploads and a missing GPAT, GATE or NET score. Use the correction window only for allowed fields.

NIPER JEE Exam Pattern

Feature

2026 pattern

Mode

Computer-based test

Questions

200 multiple-choice questions

Total marks

100

Duration

150 minutes

Marking

+0.5 for a correct answer, -0.125 for a wrong answer, no deduction for unattempted questions

Section A

About 80 questions: general English, aptitude, reasoning, general knowledge

Section B

About 120 questions: B.Pharm level subjects (master's) or the discipline-based paper (PhD)

Reports on the section split and duration differ across sources, and some pages still carry earlier-year figures. Use the table as a working guide and confirm it in the brochure. The NIPER JEE exam pattern page explains the differences in detail.

What this means for you

  • Each question is worth little: At half a mark each, a careless wrong answer costs a quarter of what a correct one earns. Guess only when you can remove two options.

  • Section A is a scoring opportunity: Roughly 40 percent of the questions are general. Daily aptitude practice pays off here.

  • Time per question is short: 150 minutes for 200 questions is under 45 seconds each, so speed in recall-based pharmacology and chemistry matters.

NIPER JEE Syllabus in Brief

NIPER describes the paper as testing B.Pharm and M.Sc level knowledge, along with general aptitude. We could not find a topic-wise syllabus in the official material available to us, so the table below is a working checklist based on the subjects the paper draws on. Use it as a guide, not as an official list.

Area

Important topics

Pharmacology

Pharmacokinetics, receptors, autonomic and CNS drugs, antimicrobials, toxicology

Pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry

Organic reactions, stereochemistry, heterocycles, drug design, structure-activity relationships

Pharmaceutics

Dosage forms, drug delivery, biopharmaceutics, physical pharmacy

Pharmaceutical analysis

UV, IR, NMR and mass spectrometry, chromatography, method validation, quality assurance

Natural products

Metabolites, extraction and isolation, standardisation

Biotechnology and biochemistry

Enzymes, rDNA technology, immunoassays, gene expression

Aptitude and general knowledge

Quantitative aptitude, reasoning, English, current developments in pharma

Our NIPER JEE syllabus page breaks these areas into smaller topics and suggests where to begin.

Selection Process and Counselling

  1. Computer-based test: All candidates appear for the CBT, and a rank is prepared.

  2. Result and rank card: Candidates download the rank card from the official portal.

  3. Counselling: Master's candidates (M.S., M.Pharm, M.Tech) are allotted seats through online counselling in phases, based on rank, category and choices. A counselling fee of Rs. 1,000 (Rs. 500 for SC and ST) was reported for 2026.

  4. MBA (Pharm): The final merit reportedly combines 85 percent from the CBT with 15 percent from a group discussion and personal interview.

  5. PhD: The final merit reportedly combines 85 percent from the CBT with 15 percent from an interview, followed by offline counselling.

  6. Document verification and admission: Keep original certificates ready, pay the admission fee on time and report to the allotted NIPER.

Weightages and fees come from the 2026 cycle. Confirm them in the brochure for your year.

Seats and Cut-off Reference

Trackers report roughly 980 to 1,050 master's seats and about 180 PhD seats across the seven institutes. These numbers differ by source and by year, so use the official seat matrix released with counselling.

NIPER admits by rank within each programme and category, so the useful number is the closing rank for your preferred institute and specialisation. It changes every year with difficulty, seats and applicants. Treat last year's figures as a benchmark only, and read the NIPER JEE cut-off page for a method to set your target.

How to Prepare for NIPER JEE

  • Start with core subjects: Revise pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics and analysis from your B.Pharm books. Questions are largely conceptual and recall-based.

  • Add aptitude early: Spend 30 minutes a day on quantitative aptitude, reasoning and English so Section A does not become a last-minute worry.

  • Keep short notes: Maintain formula sheets, named reactions, drug classes and instrument principles on one page each.

  • Follow a phased plan: Spend the first weeks on concepts, the middle weeks on subject-wise tests, and the last weeks on full-length mocks with same-day analysis.

Keep an error log of every wrong or guessed answer, and revise it every week. The same few topics usually cause most of the lost marks, and the log shows you which ones.
