NMTC Eligibility 2026: Classes, Age Limit and Rules

NMTC eligibility depends on the class a student is studying in and on whether the student's school or college is registered with the Association of Mathematics Teachers of India (AMTI). There is no entrance qualification, minimum percentage or age limit mentioned in AMTI's circular. A student of Class 5 or above, in an institution that registers, can take part at the level that matches the class.

This page explains the class-wise levels, the rules on board and medium, why registration goes through the school, what happens if your school does not take part, and who qualifies for the final stage. The rules come from AMTI's 2025-26 circular, the latest official document available when this page was written, so confirm them against the circular your school receives for the current year.

Students of Classes 1 to 4 are not covered by NMTC. Some pages list contests for younger children, but those belong to other olympiads and not to AMTI's NMTC.

Two points are not addressed in the circular: whether a strong student may attempt a level above their class, and how a student whose class changes between registration and the test is handled. If this applies to you, ask your school to write to AMTI before registering. The contact details in the circular are [email protected] and the AMTI Chennai office.

Board, Medium and Place of Study

  • All boards: The circular invites students from schools and junior colleges of all boards, including CBSE, ICSE and state boards.

  • English medium: The paper is in English at every level. Students who study in another language at school can still take part, but they should be comfortable with English mathematical terms such as "remainder", "divisible", "cyclic quadrilateral" and "permutation".

  • India: The circular describes participants as students of institutions in India.

Age Limit and Educational Requirement

AMTI's circular does not set an age limit and does not ask for a minimum score in the previous class. Eligibility is decided by the class in which the student is enrolled and by the institution's registration. This is different from job exams, where age and qualification rules are fixed in a notification. If the current year's circular adds any such rule, the school will receive it, so ask for the latest copy.

Why Registration Goes Through the School

NMTC's Stage 1 is a school-conducted test, so the school is a necessary part of the process. AMTI sends the question paper and response sheets to the registered email address of the school. The school supervises the test, evaluates the sheets with AMTI's answer key and sends the list of selected students. For this reason, the circular states:

  • Only institutions can register candidates.

  • The institution's registered name and its full address with pincode and contact number must be given exactly.

  • Entries are accepted only on AMTI's official proforma, through the online Data Consolidation Sheet and Name List.

  • The test date and time are fixed by AMTI. A school cannot change them.

What If My School Does Not Participate

This is the most common problem for interested students. The circular says individual registrations are not accepted. These are the practical options:

  1. Ask your mathematics teacher or principal: A school only needs to register and pay for its students, so it helps to arrive with a list of interested students.

  2. Form a group: Several interested students in the same school can approach the school together, which makes it easier to justify the effort.

  3. Check AMTI's website and the exam portal: AMTI's NMTC exam portal has a candidate registration page. Its rules for individuals could not be verified when this page was written, so check the portal and the AMTI notice for the current cycle before concluding that individual entry is impossible.

  4. Contact AMTI: The circular lists the AMTI office in Chennai and a support email for queries.

Eligibility for the Final Stage

Registering does not guarantee a place in Stage 2. The circular says the top 10% at each level in the preliminary test are selected, and that names beyond this share are rejected. The selection certificate then works as the hall ticket. Students who do not make the top 10% in Stage 1 do not take the final, but they still benefit from the experience and can try again next year at the level of their new class.

Common Reasons a Candidate Is Left Out

  • School missed the deadline: The circular says late entries may not be entertained, and AMTI does not send individual reminders.

  • Payment not completed: Registration is not complete until the fee is properly paid.

  • Incorrect institution details: The circular says only entries on the official proforma are processed, and that the institution's registered name must be exact, with a full address, pincode and contact number.

  • Not in the top 10%: This does not mean a student was ineligible, only that they did not advance to the final.

  • Late dispatch of final answer books: The circular states that delayed receipts are not entertained.

Common Eligibility Situations

Situation

What applies

Student in Class 10 at a CBSE school

Eligible for the Junior (Bhaskara) contest if the school registers

Student in Class 12 at a state-board junior college

Eligible for the Inter (Ramanujan) contest; junior colleges are named in the circular

First-year degree student

Eligible for the Senior (Aryabhata) contest through the college

Student in Class 4 or below

Not covered by the levels in the circular

Student in a school outside India

The circular speaks of institutions in India; ask AMTI before registering

Student who studies at home or through an open school

The circular does not address this; ask AMTI whether an institution can register you

Dates That Affect Eligibility

Unlike exams with an age cut-off date, NMTC has no reference date for age or qualification. The dates that matter are the registration deadline, because the school must register before it, and the test dates, because the level depends on the class you are studying in at the time.

Milestone

2025-26 (official circular)

2026-27 (reported)

School registration deadline

1 July 2025

July 2026; sources differ on the exact day

Stage 1 for eligible candidates

23 August 2025

30 August 2026

Stage 2 for those in the top 10%

25 October 2025

25 October 2026

For the next cycle, the practical advice is to speak to your school in April or May, which leaves time for the school to collect names and complete the online registration before the July deadline. The dates for the next cycle have not been announced yet.

Fee and Registration Deadline

The 2025-26 circular states a fee of Rs. 150 per candidate. The institution may claim Rs. 25 per candidate for expenses. The fee is paid online by the school and is not refundable. No separate fee for the final is mentioned. Some education sites quote early and late deadlines for 2026, but these were not found in an official AMTI document.

Step-by-Step Checklist for Students and Parents

  1. Find your level using the class table above.

  2. Ask your school whether it registers students for NMTC and when the internal deadline is. Schools usually need time before AMTI's last date.

  3. Check that your name, class and level are written correctly on the school's list.

  4. Read the NMTC syllabus for your level and the lower levels.

  5. Understand the format on the NMTC exam pattern page.

  6. Start timed practice well before Stage 1. Testkart online tests, where available for NMTC, give you a way to practise in a similar time limit.

For Teachers and Schools

A mathematics teacher or coordinator can register a whole batch in one go. The school should keep the registered email address active, because the paper, response sheets, answer key and final-test material arrive by email. The school also needs to arrange the premises for Stage 1 and supply un-ruled A4 sheets for the final. Teachers who want to run their own practice tests for NMTC candidates can create and manage them on Testkart.
