Punjab Police SI
Punjab Police SI is a recruitment exam for the recruitment of Sub Inspectors, relevant to candidates preparing for state government department recruitment.
Punjab Police SI recruitment is the direct entry route to the rank of Sub-Inspector in the Punjab Police, the state police force of Punjab. Selected candidates join either the District Police cadre, which handles policing and investigation at the district level, or the Armed Police cadre. The most recent direct recruitment drive for SIs was advertised in January 2023 under Advertisement No. 1/2023 for 288 posts.
This page explains where Punjab Police SI recruitment stands in 2026, what changed in the state's recruitment rules this year, and what the last cycle looked like: eligibility, fee, selection process, exam pattern, syllabus, physical standards, salary and a practical preparation plan. Figures from the 2023 cycle are labelled as such, so you can use them as a reliable guide while you wait for the next notification.

Latest Updates: Where SI Recruitment Stands in 2026
Many pages online still show a "2024" or "2025" Punjab Police SI notification as coming soon. As of October 2026, no fresh direct recruitment notice for Sub-Inspectors has been issued after Advertisement No. 1/2023. Here is what has actually happened since then.
New ASI recruitment rules: In 2026 the Punjab Government notified the Punjab Police (Second Amendment) Rules, 2026, amending the Punjab Police Rules, 1934. The amendment provides for direct appointment at the Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) level, with up to 30% of posts in the District, Intelligence, Investigation and Technical Support Services cadres and up to 10% in the Armed cadre.
450 direct ASI posts approved: In October 2026, the Chief Minister announced a plan for about 10,000 police recruitments, including 3,400 constables and 450 direct ASI posts. The detailed ASI notification is still awaited.
Status of SI direct entry: Some reports say direct recruitment at the SI rank has been replaced by direct recruitment at the ASI rank. We could not confirm this from an SI-specific official notice, so treat it as unconfirmed and watch the official website.
What this means for you: The ASI eligibility under the new rules (age 18 to 28, graduation, Punjabi up to matriculation) matches the old SI criteria closely. Preparation for the SI syllabus therefore carries over almost fully if the next opening comes at the ASI level.

Punjab Police SI Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification
Graduation: A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university or equivalent, for both the District and Armed cadres.
Punjabi: Punjabi at matriculation level, or an equivalent Punjabi qualification recognised by the Punjab Government. You also have to clear the qualifying Punjabi paper in the written test.
Age Limit and Relaxation
The age limit in the 2023 cycle was 18 to 28 years, calculated as on 1 January 2023. Upper age relaxation was given as follows.
Category | Upper age relaxation (2023 cycle) |
|---|---|
SC, ST and Backward Classes | 5 years |
Ex-servicemen | Length of service in the Defence Forces plus 3 years |
Government employees | 5 years |
Relaxations apply only to categories recognised by the Punjab Government, so check the category definitions in the notification before you apply.
Physical Standards
In the last cycle, the minimum height was 5 feet 7 inches for men and 5 feet 2 inches for women, checked in the Physical Measurement Test. Height relaxations, if any, are specified in the notification.
Application Fee and How to Apply
Category | Fee (2023 cycle) |
|---|---|
General | Rs. 1,600 (Rs. 800 registration plus Rs. 800 exam fee) |
SC and ST (all states), Backward Classes of Punjab, EWS | Rs. 950 (Rs. 750 plus Rs. 200) |
Ex-servicemen of Punjab and lineal descendants | Rs. 750 |
The fee is non-refundable and was payable online through net banking, debit or credit card or UPI. The application process usually follows these steps:
Open the recruitment link on punjabpolice.gov.in and register with a valid mobile number and email.
Fill in personal, category, educational and Punjabi qualification details.
Upload your photograph and signature in the specified format.
Pay the fee and submit the form, then save the confirmation page.
Applications are often rejected for a wrong category claim, mismatched details between the form and certificates, or an unclear photograph. Check every entry against your documents before final submission.
Punjab Police SI Selection Process
Computer Based Test: Paper I and Paper II decide merit for the next stage. Paper III (Punjabi) must be cleared but its marks are not added.
Physical Measurement Test (PMT): Height measurement against the prescribed standard. Qualifying only.
Physical Screening Test (PST): Timed running and jumping events. Qualifying only.
Document scrutiny: Verification of age, education, category, Punjabi qualification and other claims before inclusion in the merit list.
PST Events in the Last Cycle
Event | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
Run | 1600 metres in 7 minutes | 800 metres in 5 minutes |
Long jump | 3.65 metres | 3.00 metres |
High jump | 1.10 metres | 0.90 metres |
These standards are as reported for the 2023 cycle. Ex-servicemen had separate walk-and-run and sit-up events. Confirm all figures in the next notification, because physical standards are often revised.
Punjab Police SI Exam Pattern
The written test is a computer-based, objective exam with three papers. Paper I and Paper II are scored for merit, while Paper III is a qualifying Punjabi test.
Paper | Sections (questions) | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Paper I | General Awareness (50), Quantitative Aptitude and Numerical Skills (30), Punjabi Language Skills (20) | 100 | 400 | 2 hours |
Paper II | Logical and Analytical Reasoning and Data Interpretation (50), Digital Literacy and Computer Awareness (30), English Language Skills (20) | 100 | 400 | 2 hours |
Paper III | Punjabi language (matriculation standard), qualifying | 50 | 50 | 1 hour |
Total | Merit marks from Paper I and II | 250 | 800 + 50 | 5 hours |
Each question in Paper I and II carries 4 marks. For the 2023 cycle, a wrong answer reportedly cost one-fourth of the question's marks, that is 1 mark. Paper III needed at least 50% to qualify.
What this means for you:
Two sections carry half the paper: General Awareness and Reasoning together give 400 of the 800 merit marks.
Guessing has a cost: Four wrong guesses wipe out the marks of one correct answer, so attempt only when you can eliminate options.
Punjabi counts twice: It appears as 80 marks in Paper I and as a separate qualifying paper. Weak Punjabi can end your selection even with a high merit score.

In-hand salary depends on the posting city, allowances in force and deductions. Treat any in-hand figure you see online as an estimate, not an official number.
How to Prepare for the Punjab Police SI Exam
Because the next notification date is unknown, the smart approach is to build a strong base now and switch to exam mode once the notice is out.
Start with the heavy sections: General Awareness and Reasoning carry 200 marks each. Give them the most study time from week one.
Build Punjab-specific knowledge: Punjab history, Sikh Gurus, Punjab geography, state schemes and current affairs are areas where many aspirants lose easy marks.
Practise Punjabi daily: Read a Punjabi newspaper and practise translation both ways. Matriculation-level grammar from PSEB textbooks covers most of the qualifying paper.
Do not ignore digital literacy: Its 30 questions are mostly factual and quick to score with a short revision list.
Train for the physical test early: The 1600-metre or 800-metre run needs weeks of practice. Start running alongside your written preparation.
Use Mock Tests the Right Way
Each paper gives you 120 minutes for 100 questions, so speed and accuracy matter as much as knowledge. Take full-length mocks in the exact paper format, analyse every wrong and skipped question, and keep an error log for revision.
Punjab Police has not published SI cut-off marks in a form we could verify for the 2023 cycle, so we have not listed figures here. Cut-offs change every cycle with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants.
