State Government Recruitment

Punjab Police SI Eligibility: Age, Qualification and Height

Punjab Police SI eligibility rests on five conditions: Indian citizenship, a graduate degree, Punjabi passed at matriculation level, an age between 18 and 28 years, and a minimum height of 5 feet 7 inches for men or 5 feet 2 inches for women. Reserved categories of Punjab, ex-servicemen and serving government employees get relief on the upper age limit.

These rules come from the last official Sub-Inspector notification, Advertisement No. 01 of 2023, issued for 288 posts in the District Police and Armed Police cadres, with age and qualification counted as on 1 January 2023. In July 2026, the Punjab Cabinet stopped direct recruitment at the SI rank and moved direct entry to the Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) level. This page explains each SI condition in detail, flags what may change for ASI, and lists the mistakes that most often lead to rejection.

2026 Update: What Changes for Aspirants Now

On 21 July 2026, the Punjab Cabinet decided that direct recruitment would no longer be made at the Sub-Inspector rank. Instead, a share of ASI posts will be filled directly: about 30% in the District, Intelligence, Investigation and Technical cadres, and about 10% in the Armed cadre. Around 450 ASI posts were reported to have been approved for the first drive.

The ASI notification had not been released when this page was written. It will set its own eligibility rules, so keep these points in mind:

  • The SI rules are the closest reference. ASI is also a graduate-level, officer-entry post, and Punjab Police has used the same nationality, Punjabi and age structure across its recent recruitments.

  • The crucial date will change. Age and qualification will be counted on whatever date the ASI notification fixes, not 1 January 2023.

  • Cadre-specific rules may return. Earlier SI cycles that included the Intelligence and Investigation cadres had extra conditions, such as a computer qualification for Intelligence and a different height standard. Check the cadre table in the new notification.

Nationality

You must be a citizen of India. The notification also states that you must not hold citizenship, permanent residency or a green card of any other country. Candidates from any Indian state can apply, but the reservation and age-relaxation benefits described below apply only to residents of Punjab.

Educational Qualification

Graduation in Any Stream

The minimum qualification for SI is a bachelor's degree from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification. No particular stream is required, so graduates in arts, commerce, science, engineering and other disciplines are all eligible. A postgraduate degree is acceptable but earns no extra marks. It matters only as the third tie-breaker in the merit list, after age and Paper I marks.

Crucial Date for Qualification

The 2023 notification required candidates to hold the degree on or before 1 January 2023, the same date used for age. Final-year students whose result was not declared by that date were not eligible for that cycle. This is stricter than many central exams, which allow final-year students to apply provisionally, so check the crucial date in each new notification before you apply.

Earlier Cadre-Specific Conditions

The 2021 SI recruitment, which covered the Investigation, District, Armed and Intelligence cadres, asked Intelligence cadre candidates for a computer qualification in addition to graduation. The 2023 notification covered only the District and Armed cadres and listed graduation alone. If a future notification includes the Intelligence or Technical cadres, expect extra qualification rules for those posts.

Punjabi Language Requirement

This is the condition that rules out the largest number of otherwise-eligible candidates, especially those from outside Punjab. You must have passed matriculation (Class 10) with Punjabi as a compulsory or elective subject, or have passed an equivalent Punjabi exam specified by the Punjab Government.

Punjabi is then tested again in the written exam: 20 questions worth 80 marks in Paper I, and a separate 50-mark qualifying Paper III where you need at least 50%. The full breakdown is on the Punjab Police SI exam pattern page.

If you did not study Punjabi in Class 10, check whether you hold or can obtain an equivalent qualification recognised by the Punjab Government before the crucial date. Without it, you cannot clear document scrutiny even if you top the written exam.

Punjab Police SI Age Limit

The age limit for SI was 18 to 28 years as on 1 January 2023. Age is always counted on the crucial date fixed in the notification, not on the date you apply or sit the exam. Even a single day can decide eligibility at the upper limit, so calculate your exact age on that date, and use the date-of-birth range printed in the notification if one is given.

Your date of birth is taken from your matriculation certificate. Any other document showing a different date will not be accepted, so make sure the date you enter in the application matches that certificate exactly.

An example makes the ex-servicemen rule clear. Suppose an ex-serviceman is 38 years old on the crucial date and served 8 years in the Armed Forces. Deducting the service gives 30 years. That is within 3 years of the 28-year limit, so the candidate is eligible. With only 6 years of service, the resulting 32 years would be outside the limit.

The 2023 notification did not list separate relaxations for widows or sportspersons. Sportspersons' vacancies were filled separately, so if you belong to that group, follow the separate notice for those posts.

Physical Standards

Physical standards are checked after the written exam, but you should be sure you meet them before you pay the fee.

Eligibility for Women Candidates

Women are eligible on the same terms as men for qualification, Punjabi and age. The differences are in the physical standards: a minimum height of 5 feet 2 inches, an 800-metre race in 5 minutes, a 2.75-metre long jump and a 0.90-metre high jump.

A share of posts in each category is reserved for women. In the 2023 notification, 48 of the 144 District Police posts and 49 of the 144 Armed Police posts were for women. The notification also allowed pregnant candidates to request postponement of the physical test, supported by a government hospital report, with rules for a later attempt.

Reserved Categories and Candidates from Other States

The 2023 vacancies were split across General, SC (Balmiki and Mazhbi Sikh), SC (Ramdasia and Others), Backward Classes, EWS, Ex-servicemen, Wards of Police Personnel and Wards of Freedom Fighters. Reservation applies only to residents of Punjab, and your certificate must be issued in the format prescribed by the Punjab Government.

Candidates from other states can apply, but only against General category posts. They must meet the full age limit without relaxation and must still satisfy the Punjabi requirement.

Documents Checked at Scrutiny

Eligibility is finally confirmed at document scrutiny, after the physical tests. Bring originals and one self-attested copy of each:

  • Matriculation certificate: Proof of date of birth, and often proof of Punjabi.

  • Graduation degree: Or an equivalent qualification, held by the crucial date.

  • Punjabi certificate: If Punjabi does not appear on your matriculation certificate, bring the equivalent qualification.

  • Category certificate: In the Punjab Government format; for Wards of Police Personnel, a certificate from the DGP's office.

  • NOC: From your department, if you are a serving government employee.

  • Ex-servicemen documents: Discharge and service records, where they apply.

Missing even one required original leads to exclusion, regardless of your written score.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Final-year students without a result: If the degree result is not declared by the crucial date, you cannot apply for that cycle.

  • Candidates without Punjabi at matriculation: Unless they hold an equivalent approved by the Punjab Government.

  • Over-age candidates outside Punjab: Relaxations do not apply to residents of other states.

  • Holders of foreign citizenship, permanent residency or a green card.

  • Candidates below the height standard: The 2023 notification listed no height relaxation for SI.

  • Applicants with mismatched details: A date of birth or category that differs from the certificate leads to rejection at scrutiny.

Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply

  1. Confirm the post: Read whether the notification is for SI, ASI or another rank, and which cadres it covers.

  2. Check the crucial date: Calculate your age and confirm your degree result on that date.

  3. Check Punjabi: Make sure Punjabi appears on your matriculation certificate or that you hold an approved equivalent.

  4. Check your category: Confirm your certificate is in the Punjab format.

  5. Measure your height honestly: Do this before paying the fee.

  6. Start fitness training early: The 1600-metre or 800-metre race has one chance only.

Eligibility rules are published in each recruitment notification on the official Punjab Police website. Read the latest one in full before you apply, and see the Punjab Police SI exam overview for the wider recruitment picture.
