State Government Recruitment

Punjab Police Eligibility 2026: Age, Education and Height

Punjab Police eligibility for Constable recruitment rests on five checks: Indian citizenship, a 10+2 qualification, Punjabi studied at matriculation level, an age between 18 and 28 years, and the minimum height for your gender. The 2026 cycle (Advertisement No. 01/2026, 3,298 posts in the District and Armed Police Cadres) measured age and qualification as on 1 January 2026.

This guide explains each condition and the exceptions that apply to reserved categories and ex-servicemen. It also covers the Punjabi rule that catches many outside-state applicants, and the mistakes that lead to rejection at document scrutiny. Use it as a checklist before you apply in the next cycle.

Punjab Police also recruits Sub-Inspectors, Head Constables and Intelligence Assistants under separate notifications. Those posts have different qualification and age rules, so check their own notifications. This page covers Constable eligibility.

Educational Qualification

For General Candidates

You must have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board or university. No particular stream is required, so candidates from arts, commerce and science backgrounds are all eligible. A higher qualification, such as a graduate degree, is acceptable because it includes 10+2, but it earns no extra marks or preference in the merit list.

For Ex-Servicemen

Ex-servicemen need a minimum of matriculation (Class 10). This lower requirement applies only to candidates who apply against posts reserved for ex-servicemen and who hold a valid discharge certificate.

Crucial Date for Qualification

The 2026 notification required the qualification to be held on or before 1 January 2026, the same date used for age. Candidates whose 10+2 result was still awaited on that date were not eligible for that cycle. The crucial date can change from one notification to the next, so confirm it each time.

Punjabi Language Requirement

This rule applies to every applicant, including those from outside Punjab and those applying in the General category. You must have passed matriculation with Punjabi as a compulsory or elective subject, or hold an equivalent qualification recognised by the Punjab Government.

The requirement goes beyond paperwork. Punjabi is also tested in the exam itself: ten marks in Paper I count towards merit, and Paper II is a 50-mark Punjabi test that every candidate must pass with at least 50%. A candidate who meets the certificate rule but has weak Punjabi can still be eliminated at the CBT stage. The Punjab Police exam pattern page explains how both papers work.

  • Studied in Punjab: If Punjabi was part of your Class 10 subjects, your matriculation certificate is your proof.

  • Studied outside Punjab: If your Class 10 did not include Punjabi, check whether you hold a qualification the Punjab Government treats as equivalent. Without it, you are not eligible, whatever your other qualifications.

Punjab Police Age Limit and Relaxation

For the 2026 Constable recruitment, candidates had to be at least 18 years old and not more than 28 years old as on 1 January 2026. The notification translates this into a date-of-birth range, so check your date of birth against that range rather than counting years yourself. Your Class 10 certificate is the accepted proof of date of birth.

Relaxation applies only to candidates who belong to Punjab and hold the required certificate in the prescribed format. A candidate from another state who belongs to a reserved category there applies as General in Punjab and gets no age relaxation.

How the Ex-Servicemen Rule Works

Suppose an ex-serviceman is 36 years old on the reference date and served 8 years in the armed forces. Deducting the service period gives an effective age of 28. Because the upper limit is relaxed by a further 3 years, the effective limit is 31, so this candidate is within the limit. The exact method is set out in the notification, so work through it with your own figures before applying.

Nationality and Reserved Categories

You must be a citizen of India. Candidates who hold permanent residency, a green card or citizenship of another country are not eligible.

Punjab Police uses state-specific reservation categories. Each reserved category in the notification carries the word "Punjab", which means only residents of Punjab can claim it. The table below shows the 2026 vacancy split. Figures in brackets are posts reserved for women. The 2026 notification described these vacancies as tentative.

Two points are worth noting. The SC category is split into two separate groups, and you can apply only under the group shown on your certificate. Wards of police personnel and wards of freedom fighters are distinct categories with their own certificate requirements.

Eligibility for Women Candidates

Women apply under the same qualification, Punjabi and age rules as men. The differences lie in the physical standards and in the posts reserved for them. In 2026, 1,084 of the 3,298 posts were reserved for women: 825 in the District Police Cadre and 259 in the Armed Police Cadre.

  • Lower height standard: The minimum height for women is 5 feet 2 inches (157.5 cm), against 5 feet 7 inches for men.

  • Shorter race: Women run 800 metres in 4 minutes 30 seconds instead of 1600 metres, with lower long jump and high jump standards.

  • Separate cut-off: Women-reserved posts have their own category-wise cut-off, which is often a little lower than the overall figure. Women also compete for the posts open to all.

Physical Standards

Height is checked at the Physical Measurement Test, and fitness at the Physical Screening Test. Both come after the written exam, but you should check them before applying. Height cannot be improved through preparation, and the race standard needs months of training.

These standards apply to ex-servicemen below 35 years as well. Ex-servicemen above 35 years take a lighter test, and the notification lists its exact standards. Some pages online show a lower height for reserved categories. Check the current notification rather than relying on such claims.

Application Fee

The 2026 fee was made up of an application fee and an examination fee, paid together online. It is not refunded.

  • Non-citizens: Holders of permanent residency or foreign citizenship.

Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply

  1. Confirm the post: Make sure the notification is for Constable. SI and other posts have different rules.

  2. Check your date of birth: Compare it with the range given in the notification, after any relaxation.

  3. Check your qualification date: Your 10+2 must be complete by the crucial date.

  4. Check Punjabi: Confirm Punjabi appears on your matriculation certificate.

  5. Check your category: Confirm your certificate is in the Punjab format and names the right group.

  6. Measure your height: Do this honestly before paying the fee.

  7. Start fitness training: The 1600-metre or 800-metre race standard needs steady practice.

The eligibility rules are published in each recruitment notification on the official Punjab Police website. Rules on age, the crucial date and relaxations can change between cycles, so read the latest notification in full before you apply.
