Railway Exams Study Material

Railway exams are the recruitment tests that the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) and the Railway Protection Force run to fill jobs across Indian Railways. They range from Level 1 track and workshop posts open to 10th pass candidates, through ITI-based Assistant Loco Pilot and Technician posts, to graduate posts such as Goods Train Manager and Junior Engineer. Each year the RRBs now publish a calendar of Centralised Employment Notices (CENs), so a new railway notification arrives every few weeks.

This hub explains how the railway exams fit together, which one matches your qualification, and where the 2026-27 notices stand as of October 2026. It summarises eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus, pay and cut-offs, and links to the detailed page for each exam. Every figure below comes from the official CEN documents on the unified RRB website. Where a notice is still awaited, the page says so.

How Railway Recruitment Works Now

Recruitment for non-gazetted railway posts is centralised. The RRBs publish one CEN per post group, and all of them run off a single unified website, rrb.indianrailways.gov.in, with applications on rrbapply.gov.in. You choose one RRB in the application, and you compete for the vacancies of that RRB and the railway zones under it.

  • One application per CEN: The CENs state that multiple applications to the same or different RRBs lead to rejection of all of them and possible debarment.

  • Indicative notice first: A short indicative notice appears in Employment News, and the detailed CEN with post-wise vacancies follows a few weeks later.

  • Computer based tests: Every exam starts with a CBT. Questions carry one mark and a wrong answer costs one-third of a mark.

  • Normalisation: When a CBT runs in many shifts, the RRBs normalise marks before shortlisting.

Railway Recruitment Calendar: 2025-26 and 2026-27 CENs

The RRBs number CENs by year, so a regular calendar now repeats: ALP and Technician early in the year, Section Controller, JE and Paramedical in the middle, NTPC in the second half, then Isolated Categories and Level 1 posts at the turn of the year. The table lists what the official site shows on 11 October 2026.

Not announced

Exam dates for each CEN are announced separately on the RRB website, usually a few months after the application window closes. If last year's sequence holds, the next undergraduate NTPC, Isolated Categories and Level 1 notices would follow between late 2026 and early 2027, but that timing is tentative. Track the official unified RRB website and your registered email.

What changed in the 2026-27 notices

  • NTPC Graduate typing test dropped: CEN 06/2026 dispenses with the typing skill test for the typist posts. Typing proficiency is assessed after joining instead.

  • Fewer NTPC graduate posts: CEN 06/2026 covers four posts, with Goods Train Manager making up 2,750 of the 3,548 vacancies.

  • CMA added to the JE notice: Corrigendum 1 to CEN 04/2026 added 35 Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant vacancies for B.Sc. candidates.

  • Technician split: CEN 02/2026 has 323 Grade I Signal posts and 6,234 Grade III posts, each with its own CBT.

  1. Create an account: Register once on rrbapply.gov.in. If you applied for an earlier CEN, the CENs ask you to use the same login.

  2. Choose one RRB: Pick the board carefully, since you compete for its vacancies only.

  3. Rank post preferences: Posts you do not opt for are treated as unwillingness, and options cannot be changed later.

  4. Capture photo and upload documents: A live photo is captured during application, and scanned documents must match the stated specifications.

  5. Pay and submit: Pay before the fee deadline, then use the paid modification window only if you made an error.

Common rejection reasons are duplicate applications, an unclear photo or signature, a name that does not match the 10th certificate, and claiming a category without a valid certificate dated as the CEN requires.

What this means for you: speed matters in every railway exam, because most papers give you about 54 seconds a question. Negative marking of one-third means three wrong guesses cancel one correct answer. One notable change: CEN 06/2026 has dispensed with the typing skill test for the graduate typist posts, so older pages describing a typing stage for NTPC Graduate are out of date.

Selection Process

  1. First CBT: Usually a screening test. In NTPC, ALP and JE, about 15 times the vacancies move on to the second CBT.

  2. Second CBT or skill stage: Merit-deciding in NTPC and JE. In ALP, Part A counts and Part B is a qualifying trade test needing 35%.

  3. Aptitude or physical test: ALP has a CBAT where CBT 2 Part A and CBAT carry 50:50 weight. Group D and RPF have qualifying physical tests.

  4. Document verification and medical: Candidates equal to the vacancies are called, and the medical standard of the post must be met.

How to Prepare for Railway Exams

  • Build the shared core first: Mathematics, reasoning and general awareness appear in every railway exam, so they give the highest return.

  • Add 10th level science early: It carries 25 to 40 questions in Group D and Technician Grade III, and it feeds ALP and JE too.

  • Layer the technical part: ITI trade theory for ALP Part B, engineering for JE CBT 2, and professional subjects for Paramedical.

  • Train for the physical test: Start running practice months before Group D or RPF results, not after.

Practise in the real format

Full-length timed tests show whether you can finish 100 questions in 90 minutes without careless negatives. You can attempt railway mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to decide what to revise next. Testkart also lists study material for railway aspirants, which you can pair with previous year papers.
