Railway TTE

Railway TTE is a recruitment exam, relevant to candidates preparing for Indian Railways recruitment.

Railway TTE stands for Travelling Ticket Examiner, the Indian Railways staff member who checks tickets on trains and at stations, deals with ticketless travel and manages berth allotment on board. It is a Commercial Department post, and it is one of the most searched railway jobs. It is also one of the most misunderstood, because many pages online describe it as if the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) advertise a separate "TTE exam" every year.

This page explains how the post is actually reached, what the current RRB recruitment cycle (CEN 06/2026 and CEN 07/2026) offers, and how to prepare for the computer-based tests that lead into commercial roles. Year-specific facts are kept in labelled sections so you can tell them apart from evergreen guidance.

What a Railway TTE does

A TTE works in the ticket-checking staff of the Commercial Department. The day-to-day work depends on posting, but the core duties are the same across zones.

  • Ticket checking: Verifying tickets and reservations on moving trains and at station platforms.

  • Berth management: Allotting vacant berths and handling passenger requests as per the rules.

  • Penalty and fare collection: Dealing with ticketless and wrongly booked travel as per the railway rules.

  • Reporting: Maintaining charts and records and reporting irregularities to the supervisory staff.

How the TTE post is filled: the recruitment route

This is the point most candidates miss. On the sources we could check, the TTE is not a post that the RRBs advertise in the NTPC graduate notification (CEN 06/2026). The notification lists Goods Train Manager, Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist and Senior Clerk cum Typist. Travelling Ticket Examiner does not appear in it.

In practice, ticket examiner posts are filled mainly from within the Commercial Department. Staff in lower commercial and clerical grades, such as Commercial Clerks and Ticket Collectors, become eligible for promotion on seniority and through departmental selections. Promotion rules, including any departmental selection, are set by the Railway Board and the zonal railway. Rules are revised from time to time, so check the latest official circular or your zonal railway's notice.

What this means for an outside aspirant is simple. The realistic way to get into the ticketing line is to join the railways through a commercial entry-level post, then move up through promotion. The nearest direct-entry post in the current cycle is Commercial cum Ticket Clerk in CEN 07/2026.

Treat any page that gives a fixed TTE vacancy count, a standalone TTE exam date or a "TTE syllabus" as unverified unless it links to an official RRB or railway notice.

Eligibility in brief

  • CEN 06/2026 (graduate): A degree from a recognised university or equivalent, with the post-wise qualification given in the notification. Age 18 to 33 years as on 1 January 2027, with category relaxations.

  • CEN 07/2026 (Commercial cum Ticket Clerk): Class 12 or equivalent. Age 18 to 30 years as on 1 January 2027, as reported. A minimum aggregate percentage condition applies to some categories, so read the notification.

Exam pattern in brief

Both NTPC cycles use two computer-based tests (CBT 1 and CBT 2). CBT 1 in CEN 06/2026 has 100 questions and 100 marks in 90 minutes. CBT 2 has 120 questions in 90 minutes. Each wrong answer carries a deduction of one third of a mark.

Syllabus in brief

The RRB names the subjects but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus for these tests. The topic list on our Railway TTE syllabus page is a working checklist built from the subject headings and from commonly asked areas. For a departmental selection, the syllabus is set by the railway administration in its own notice.

Selection process

  1. CBT 1: Screening test with qualifying percentages by category.

  2. CBT 2: Candidates are shortlisted in a fixed multiple of the vacancies, community-wise.

  3. Document verification: Original documents are checked for shortlisted candidates.

  4. Medical examination: Applies to the graduate posts as per the post's medical standard. Check the notification for the clerk posts.

Salary and career growth

Pay depends on the grade of the post. The notification-based initial pay for Commercial cum Ticket Clerk is reported as Level 3, Rs. 21,700, and for Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor as Level 6, Rs. 35,400. We have not found an official figure for the TTE grade that we can confirm, so check the current pay matrix of your zone. In-hand pay is higher or lower than basic pay because of allowances and deductions, and it varies by city.

A typical commercial career moves from clerical and ticket-collection roles to ticket examiner, then to supervisory roles such as Travelling Ticket Inspector and Chief Ticket Inspector. Exact promotion timelines depend on vacancies and rules.

How to prepare

  • Start with the three CBT subjects: General Awareness, Mathematics and Reasoning decide your progress in every NTPC cycle.

  • Build speed in Mathematics: Practise arithmetic and number-based questions in short timed sets.

  • Read railway current affairs: Track railway news, budget themes and major national events, and revise them monthly.

  • Take timed tests: Begin sectional tests, then move to full-length mocks in the exact format of the notification.

  • Analyse every attempt: Note wrong answers, slow questions and skipped-but-solvable questions.

Cut-off reference

There is no separate cut-off for a TTE entry exam because the post has no standalone RRB examination. For CBT 1 in CEN 06/2026, the notification reports minimum qualifying percentages of 40 percent for UR and EWS, 30 percent for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25 percent for ST. These are qualifying marks, not merit cut-offs. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants, so treat any figure as a benchmark only.

Official updates are published on the Railway Recruitment Boards website and applications are made at rrbapply.gov.in.
