Railway TTE Eligibility: Age Limit, Education and Route

Railway TTE eligibility is not a single rule, because the Travelling Ticket Examiner post is reached in more than one way. The post sits in the Commercial Department of the Indian Railways and is filled mainly through promotion from lower commercial and clerical grades. The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) do not advertise a standalone TTE post in the current cycle.

This page separates the two questions aspirants actually have. First, what do you need to be a TTE through the departmental route? Second, who can apply today for the entry-level and graduate commercial posts in the NTPC cycle (CEN 06/2026 and CEN 07/2026)? Dates and age limits below are year-specific. The rest is evergreen guidance.

Two routes to the TTE post

Route 1: Departmental promotion

Ticket examiner posts are filled mainly from within the Commercial Department. Staff in the lower grades, such as Commercial Clerks and Ticket Collectors, become eligible after the required service, and selection is on seniority and, where the rules provide, through departmental selection. Promotion rules, including the required service in the feeder grade, are set by the Railway Board and the zonal railway. Rules get revised, so check the latest official circular and confirm with your zonal railway before relying on them.

Route 2: Enter through a commercial post, then progress

If you are not yet a railway employee, the practical path is to join through an entry-level commercial post, for example Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, and then move up through promotion. There is no guaranteed timeline, and promotion depends on vacancies, seniority and departmental selection rules.

Educational qualification

  • Graduate posts (CEN 06/2026): A degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification. Post-wise parameters are given in an annexure of the notification, so read the entry for your post.

  • 12th-level posts (CEN 07/2026): Class 12 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board. Reports mention a 50 percent aggregate condition that is relaxed for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates and for those with a higher qualification. Verify this in the notification.

  • Result deadline: You must hold the required qualification on or before the closing date of the application, which is 6 November 2026 for CEN 06/2026.

Final-year students whose results are not out by the closing date should not assume they are eligible. Read the notification's qualification clause carefully.

Age limit and relaxations

Age is counted as on 1 January 2027 for both notifications.

CEN 06/2026 (graduate posts)

OBC-NCL

Persons with benchmark disabilities

CEN 07/2026 (12th-level posts)

The age limit is reported as 18 to 30 years as on 1 January 2027, with category relaxations. The relaxation table for these posts should be read from the CEN 07/2026 notification, as we could not confirm it from the notification text.

Nationality and other conditions

  • Nationality: Candidates must meet the nationality conditions given in the notification, and the usual rule for central government jobs applies.

  • One application: Apply to one RRB region as per the notification and avoid duplicate applications.

  • Language: The CBT is offered in English, Hindi and the regional languages listed in the notification.

  • Application window: Fee payment closes shortly after the last date to apply, and a corrections window follows. Check the exact dates on the official portal.

Medical standards

The graduate posts in CEN 06/2026 have post-wise medical standards: A-2 for Goods Train Manager, B-2 for Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, and C-2 for Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist and Senior Clerk cum Typist. Check the medical standard for your post in the notification, including the vision requirements, before you apply. Ticketing roles involve long hours on trains and platforms, so physical fitness matters.

Who is not eligible

  • Candidates who do not hold the required qualification on or before the closing date.

  • Candidates above the upper age limit on 1 January 2027, after applying only the relaxations they are entitled to.

  • Candidates who do not meet the post's medical standard.

  • Outside candidates who wish to apply for a TTE post directly, since no direct standalone RRB notification exists in this cycle.

Application fee and documents

For CEN 06/2026 the fee is Rs. 500 for general candidates, of which Rs. 400 is refundable on appearing in CBT 1, and Rs. 250 for SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, women, transgender, minority and economically backward candidates, refundable on appearing in CBT 1. Bank charges are deducted from refunds. Keep your educational certificates, category certificate, photo identity proof and a recent photograph ready before you start the form.
