Rajasthan Judicial Service Eligibility: Qualification, Age Limit and Conditions
Rajasthan Judicial Service eligibility depends on four things: your law degree, your age on the reference date, your command of Hindi and the conditions on conduct and citizenship. The Rajasthan High Court states each of these in the advertisement for the Civil Judge cadre recruitment, and the exact wording can change from one cycle to the next.
This page explains the eligibility criteria as they stood in the 2025 cycle, the most recent completed recruitment, and flags the one area where a recent Supreme Court decision may change the rule for the next advertisement. Check every point against the official notification before you apply or pay a fee.

Details marked "as reported" come from summaries of the 2025 advertisement and not from the advertisement text itself, which we could not read in full. The checklist at the end of this page shows how to confirm each point.
Educational Qualification
The basic requirement is a Bachelor of Laws (Professional) degree from a university established by law in India and recognised under the Advocates Act, 1961. Both the three-year LL.B. after graduation and the integrated five-year course qualify, as long as the degree is a professional law degree recognised for enrolment as an advocate.
Final-year students
In the 2025 cycle, students in the final year of the law degree could apply. The High Court asked qualified candidates to submit proof of the required educational qualification through a notice dated 12 September 2025, before the Main Examination. The practical lesson is simple: if you apply in your final year, make sure your result and degree will be ready before the Main stage, and keep your marksheets in a form you can upload quickly.
What to check in your degree
Recognition: Confirm that your university is recognised under the Advocates Act, 1961. A degree from an unrecognised institution does not make you eligible, however good the marks.
Professional course: The advertisement asks for a professional law degree. If your course was taken in an unusual mode, check that the rule in the advertisement covers it.
Result date: Note the last date by which the qualification must be complete, as stated in the notification.
Practice Requirement: What May Change
For many years, a fresh law graduate could appear for Civil Judge recruitment directly. The Supreme Court changed that position in its judgment of 20 May 2025 in the All India Judges Association case, which required three years of practice as an advocate. A later decision, reported as given on 21 August 2026 in Bhumika Trust v. Union of India, reduced the requirement. As reported, the Court said:
Notifications up to 31 March 2027: Candidates can apply without prior practice. They are treated as having completed one year of practice, and selected candidates first serve as trainee judicial officers with a period of training and clerkship before regular appointment.
Notifications from 1 April 2027: One year of active practice is required.
We have not seen the full text of the judgment, and the Rajasthan High Court has to apply it through its own advertisement and rules. The 2025 Rajasthan advertisement was issued in February 2025, before the May 2025 judgment. When the next Civil Judge advertisement appears, read the clause on practice, training and the practice certificate before you decide on your timeline. Do not rely on coaching summaries for this rule.
Age Limit and Relaxation
The age band in the 2025 cycle was 21 to 40 years. Age was counted as on a fixed reference date, which was reported as 1 January 2026 for that cycle. As reported, Rajasthan counts age from 1 January of the year after the advertisement, so do not count your age on the date of application.
Category | Upper-age relaxation (as reported) |
|---|---|
General male | None; upper limit of 40 years |
SC, ST, OBC, MBC and EWS of Rajasthan | 5 years |
Women | 5 years; reserved-category women may get a further relaxation under the rules |
Persons with benchmark disabilities | As per the rules; reports of the 2025 advertisement differ, so confirm the exact years |
Ex-servicemen | As per Rajasthan government rules for ex-servicemen |
Relaxation under the Rajasthan Judicial Service Rules applies to candidates of the notified categories who are domiciled in Rajasthan, as per the usual state practice. Candidates from other states are generally treated as General category. Confirm this in the advertisement.
A quick way to check your age
Find the age reference date in the advertisement.
Calculate your completed years on that date, not on today's date.
Check that the result is between the minimum and the maximum age that applies to your category after relaxation.
Make sure your date of birth is the same in your school certificate, identity proof and application form.
Language Requirement
The advertisement requires a thorough knowledge of Hindi in Devanagari script. Knowledge of Rajasthani dialects and the social customs of Rajasthan is also expected, and it is assessed in the interview.
Hindi in the exam: Hindi proficiency carries 15 per cent of the prelims, and the Main Examination has a Hindi essay of 50 marks.
Rajasthani and local knowledge: This is not a separate paper. It forms part of the interview assessment, so candidates from outside Rajasthan should read about the state's customs, regions and institutions.
Nationality, Domicile and Other Conditions
Citizenship: You must be a citizen of India.
Domicile: Candidates from other states may apply. Reports of the 2025 cycle say that they are treated as General category for reservation and fee purposes. Reserved-category benefits are for Rajasthan domicile holders.
Reservation certificates: If you claim SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), MBC (non-creamy layer) or EWS status, you need a valid certificate in the prescribed format. Check the validity period in the notice.
Character and conduct: Candidates must have a clean record. The advertisement can require character certificates and a declaration about any criminal case.
Medical fitness: Selected candidates go through a medical examination, so physical and mental fitness for judicial duties is a condition of appointment.
Attempts: No limit on the number of attempts has been reported, as long as you remain inside the age band.
Eligibility for Different Candidate Groups
The same rules apply to everyone, but the checks differ by situation. Use this table to find what matters most for you.
Candidate group | What to check first |
|---|---|
Fresh law graduate | The practice clause in the next advertisement, which is the main open question after the Supreme Court decisions |
Final-year student | The date by which proof of the degree must be submitted |
Practising advocate | The practice rule and any certificate format it requires |
Candidate from another state | Category and fee rules for non-domiciled candidates, and your Hindi preparation |
Reserved-category candidate of Rajasthan | Certificate validity, creamy-layer rules and the age relaxation that applies |
Person with a benchmark disability | The disability certificate format, the relaxation and the scribe facility notice |
Dates That Affect Your Eligibility
Four dates decide whether you qualify. Write them down as soon as the advertisement appears.
Age reference date: Your age is counted on this date, not on the day you apply.
Last date of application: In 2025, applications ran from 1 March 2025 to 30 March 2025, so the window was about a month long.
Qualification deadline: The date by which your law degree must be complete and proved.
Certificate dates: Category certificates must be valid on the date the notification specifies.
Who Is Not Eligible
These are the most common reasons for rejection. Read each one against your own case.
Degree not recognised: The law degree is not recognised under the Advocates Act, 1961.
Degree not complete in time: The final-year candidate cannot produce proof of the degree when the High Court asks for it.
Over or under age: The age on the reference date falls outside the band for your category.
Incorrect category claim: The reservation claim is not supported by a valid certificate, or an other-state candidate claims a Rajasthan-only benefit.
Unclear identity proof: The High Court issued notices in June 2025 saying that forms without a visible photo identity proof would be rejected.
Duplicate forms: The High Court deleted duplicate online application forms in 2025. Submit one form only.
Disqualifying record: A dismissal from service or a conviction involving moral turpitude, as the rules provide.
Fee and Documents
The fee depends on your category and domicile. The amounts reported for the 2025 cycle were Rs. 1,500 for General and other-state candidates, Rs. 1,250 for Rajasthan OBC and MBC (non-creamy layer) and EWS candidates, Rs. 800 for Rajasthan SC, ST and ex-servicemen, and no fee for persons with benchmark disabilities. These are reported figures, so confirm them in the advertisement.
Keep these documents ready before you start the form:
Photo and signature: Recent, clear scans that match the size limits in the instructions.
Identity proof: A valid photo ID where your face is clearly visible.
Date of birth proof: Secondary school certificate or equivalent.
Law degree documents: Degree or provisional certificate, or marksheets if you are in the final year.
Category and disability certificates: Only if you claim a benefit.
